00:37<GhostlyDeath>Is it possible to load modules into the kernel before the root directory exists possibly in initrd so modules needed to start the system are there?
00:39<GhostlyDeath>possibly with update-initrd
00:48<r0ger>i'd have to see documentation on that before i could give any input on it

02:33<jm_>rpetre: make it the first sound card if you have another, or don't load modules for the other
02:34<rpetre>jm_: since it's hotpluggable, i'd like to be able do this on the fly (but i'm looking at the .asoundrc format right now)
02:35<jm_>rpetre: making it the first sound card should work for that

04:44<thunwind>all my videos were working until the last update. :( I'm just not sure about pulling libs from sid, soudns a bit dangerous
04:44<jpinx-eeepc>thunwind: yea - it sounds dodgy, but did aptitude complain?
04:45<thunwind>honestly I don't know how to do it. The bug report just said "use the ones from sid" I've only done some light reading about pinning and mixing libs, most of it seem to say it's not recommended.
04:46<jm_>you can just download and install the packages by hand
04:47<thunwind>jm_, Wouldn't that then require all dependencies as well? gstreamer + ffmpeg, etc? That could be dozens of them right?

19:17<pwork>Hello, I'm installing a ubuntu maverick amd64 chroot on a debian lenny amd64 host. I first did an intrepid debootstrap, and now am in the process of upgrading the chroot to maverick, through Ubuntu's update-manager. The tool asks me if grub-pc must handle /dev/sda, and I fear to do a mistake : it's a chroot, and my system would get corrupt if a chroot overwrites the hard disk MBR, that is condigured to boot the host OS atm

19:19<themill>if you have bind-mounted /dev into the chroot then it will be able to make mess, yes. You'd normally avoid installing a bootloader inside the chroot

19:37<jhutchins_lt>arstechnica usually has reviews for linux.
19:38<jhutchins_lt>1080p is going to have some special requirements (I think you need an hdmi connection for instance).

23:58<franki^>Debian is KDE by default if you change the installer to install KDE. :>
23:58<jordanm>edbian: not really, but you can compile your own kernel in debian if you want
23:59<jordanm>edbian: you can cut a couple secs off boot time with a custom kernel but not using initrd
23:59<edbian>jordanm, Interesting. What is the benefit of doing that? I can put my modules in the kernel but who cares?
23:59<jordanm>!gentoosmite edbian
23:59*dpkg spends 5 weeks recompiling edbian, and when it's all done, edbian runs 5% slower than previously
23:59<jordanm>edbian: hobbiest who enjoy hours of kernel configuration...
