02:40<jm_>zyxware01: if developers did that, then people who expect gnome to install everything for X would complain :)
02:40<jm_>it's not a recommends field, it's a real dependency

03:01<craig>Hello All. I am having a system time issue. It appears that the system time is moving too fast. But, when I execute "hwclock --show" the time appears to decently close to actual time.
03:02<blarson>craig: If you have a good internet connection, install ntp
03:02<craig>I have setup ntp to monitor 3 local time servers
03:02<craig>and ntpq -p recognises the ofset is massive
03:02<craig>for all 3 servers

03:05<craig>I cannont be 100% sure it is setup perfectly. From default install of ntp and ntpdate. I modifed the /etc/ntp.conf to include my 3 servers and not the default ones. and modified the /etc/default/ntpdate.conf to use only the same servers aswell

03:09<jm_>use ntpdate for that
03:10<jm_>ntpdate-debian to be exact

03:47<dondelelcaro>that's the right time
03:47<craig>do you believe it will stay in sync
03:47<dondelelcaro>craig: if you now start ntpd, it should, yes.
03:47<craig>and or what was the issue
03:48<dondelelcaro>craig: the issue is that your tick was way wrong, so it exceeded the threshold of ntp, which causes ntp to stop trying to set the clock
03:49<grateremo>when your done with craig i would like to ask you somthing if you have time
03:49<craig>Please forgive me, but what is tick?

06:23<user99>hi, iam using ntlmaps for proxy authentication to a windows proxy server. its basically a python file that run un the background to handle the authentication, iam running this on Debian Squeeze, the python script takes up 100% of one of my cores each time it is used(for instance when I download packages via synaptic)
06:24<the-dude>user99: try cntlm instead

19:12<themill>gbp: etch is no longer on the mirrors and hasn't been supported for quite a few months now
19:12<dpkg>Etch is the codename for Debian GNU/Linux 4.0, released on April 8th, 2007. Etch security support ended on 2010-02-15, this release is no longer supported. Etch users should upgrade to Lenny, ask me about <etch->lenny>. Removed from the mirrors (2010-06-20); ask me about <etch sources.list>. For old Etch ISOs, ask me about <etch iso>.
19:12<gbp>oh right sorry :/

19:12<gbp>it's an old machine, hasn't turned off for 3 years or something
19:12<gbp>not really keen to upgrade it
19:13<gbp>is dist-upgrade as dangerous as it used to be?
19:13<dpkg>dist-upgrade tells apt to also install/remove packages when handling dependencies; security updates may require a dist-upgrade to install (they introduce new packages). Dist-upgrade does not mean changing from stable to testing; in lenny, aptitude calls dist-upgrade "full-upgrade" to remove this confusion. Read man apt-get carefully. See also <why not dist-upgrade> <sarge->etch> <etch->lenny> <lenny->squeeze> <full-upgrade>.
19:13<themill>gbp: there is a detailed set of release notes for this. /msg dpkg etch->lenny

20:09<amphi>Gateway`: the upgrade process should have started them as necessary

20:12<Gateway`>I mean by present, the one which is already installed
20:13<retrospectacus>Gateway`, no.
20:14<amphi>Gateway`: it depends on the reason for the update
20:14<themill>Gateway`: if debian is offering an updated kernel as a security update then you'd be well advised to install it and reboot into it

20:16<rpetre>also, if you installed an update to the same kernel version, you are advised to reboot soon, otherwise subsequent modprobes won't work

20:17<rpetre>you might not be affected by the fixed bugs, so if reboots are a big deal for you, you should read the changelog before upgrading :)

20:51<@Ganneff>you have one default gateway (thats what you set with gateway line in interfaces), which takes all the stuff going to hosts no other route takes. then, the other interfaces can have any number of routes for any other network ranges.
