08:36<mjt>for root it's a different matter, but i use my own mkinitramfs

18:14<vook>Xeross: ya - you need to read up on it. I'm not using it anymore, but I think that when I did, I created a boot partition that was not LVM, then had that boot the kernel & initrd (from the non LVM /boot), then booted the root (and for me, usr, var, home, tmp) from LVM.

18:19<vook>Xeross: how far are you getting? My thinking is that you can't mount the disk because the BIOS doesn't read LVM. You'll need the kernel to provide LVM support before you'll be able to access an LVM volume.

18:29<vook>Xeross: Many people argue against multiple partitions, and they make a good argument. For me, I just like seperating things out. I usually set up about 192M for boot, about 384M for root, 768M for var, 2G for home, 8G for usr, and then an archive dir. I then create symlinks for opt and usr/local to archive (.opt, .local) as well as a symlink for /var/cache/apt/archives to /usr/.archives).

20:29<Xeross>kop: Hmmk
20:29<Xeross>even fdisk detects /dev/sdbX but they aren't listed in /dev itself
20:29<Xeross>and raid doesn't pick em up either
20:30<kop>Xeross: Does it have paritions or is the whole device md raid-ed?
20:30<Xeross>kop: it's identical to sdc which has 2 partitions who are individually software raided
20:30<Xeross>I can cfdisk->write->add to raid again

20:39<Xeross>and cat /proc/mdstat shows that teh /dev/sdbX partitions arent being used
20:40<kop>Xeross: Hard to say without getting into the details, and I don't know mdadm well and am not really interesting in rtfming for you right now.
