02:27<twb>Probably; I was hoping someone would Just Know without me having to grovel through the interfaces/dhclient hooks

After the machine ran out of power, the connection was only maintained for a few seconds as I logged in. It then fell off and complainned incorrectly about a bad password. 13:08<joachim>Hi. After an upgrade to squeeze I have the problem that my keyboard is no longer recognized by X (the mouse works). If I kill gdm/kdm via ssh, I get a console where the keyboard works. Xorg.0.log does not show any errors (and the keyboard is mentioned there). It does not matter whether the keyboard is connected via USB or PS/2. Removing xorg.conf does not help either. Any ideas how to debug the problem?

13:28<mib_xamclh>and land on stable?
13:29<mib_xamclh>or my distro will start downloading new testing updates?
13:29<mjt>it isn't funny actually, testing whole thing including various installation procedures is as important as testing every individual component.

13:30<mjt>usually it's upgradeable, unless there will be some bug found in the "beta2" which can't be worked around in subsequent fixes.. But this is extremly rare
13:30<mjt>how it goes depends on your apt setup
13:30<mib_xamclh>because I want to use debian 6.0 stable on my workstation, but since it is not released yet, I want to install debian testing
13:30-!-omer [~omer@hel59-3-82-233-186-197.fbx.proxad.net] has joined #debian

13:31<mib_xamclh>but squeeze is beta1, very old :(
13:31<mjt>um
13:31<mib_xamclh>how long do you think till beta2?
13:31-!-omer [~omer@hel59-3-82-233-186-197.fbx.proxad.net] has joined #debian
13:32<mjt>right now squeeze is testing, -- testing is a symlink to squeeze.
13:32<mjt>dunno
13:32<nijabo_>I got Squeeze on a virtualbox
13:32<mjt>mib_xamclh: you grab netinstall cd, and setup current squeeze. that's all.

13:33<mib_xamclh>you mean last week release of testing
13:33<mib_xamclh>which is actually squeeze
13:33<mjt>it does not matter
13:33<nijabo_>What would you guys recommend releases or rolling?
13:33-!-bolt [~r00t@166.65.9.46.customer.cdi.no] has joined #debian
13:33<mjt>nijabo_: depends on if you want releases or rolling.
13:33<dodddummy>nijabo_, i prefer rolling and don't think i'll use a release distro any more.
13:34<mib_xamclh>ok mjt, and after squeeze goes to stable, my distro will convert to stable correct?
13:34<mjt>no
13:34<mib_xamclh>ah
13:34<mjt>you misunderstand
13:34<nijabo_>How stable is testing, compared?
13:34<mib_xamclh>because I don't want to continue with testing after stable is released
13:34<mjt>so follow squeeze, not stable or testing
13:34<jrabbit>then use "squeeze" as your dist name
13:34<mib_xamclh>yes, that's what I meant
13:35<mjt>set up squeeze in sources.list, not testing or stable
13:35<mib_xamclh>so the squeeze is not completely the same as testing
13:35<mib_xamclh>in this point

13:48<mib_xamclh>but currently they are indentical
13:48<yoshio>mib_xamclh: in /etc/apt/sources.list, I have a line as follows --> deb http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/ squeeze main contrib <-- this means I am following squeeze, which is testing now. when squeeze becomes stable, then I am still following squeeze. If I listed "testing" instead of squeeze, then it would follow squeeze, and I'd be upgraded past stable if squeeze was stable
13:48<mjt>when squeeze will be officially out, the "testing" symlink will be changed to wheeze (or how it is named) and "stable" symlink to squeeze
13:48<mjt>it won't "end on" stable
13:48<mib_xamclh>sorry for my stupidity
13:48<mib_xamclh>ok
13:48<mjt>it's stable that'll end on squeeze

13:49<mib_xamclh>thx all
13:49<mib_xamclh>gonna install debian-testing-i386-netinst.iso

18:46<dpkg>From squeeze onwards, Debian is using a dependency-based boot sequence (see /usr/share/doc/sysv-rc/README.Debian). This requires that all init scripts have appropriate headers in them so that the correct order of execution can be determined. 19:05<edbian>!lsb
19:05<dpkg>from memory, lsb is The Linux Standard Base, a set of guidelines which all linux distributions should follow to ensure compatability between them. More information can be found at http://www.linuxbase.org/ or very incomplete, or see <lsb tags>

19:07<edbian>dvs, That ^^
19:07<dpkg>From squeeze onwards, Debian is using a dependency-based boot sequence (see /usr/share/doc/sysv-rc/README.Debian). This requires that all init scripts have appropriate headers in them so that the correct order of execution can be determined. Scripts like S25libdevmapper1.02 are left over from Sarge and can be deleted; your own scripts will need LSB headers added: http://wiki.debian.org/LSBInitScripts

22:39<edbian>abrotman, Are you ready for this slice of mystery? Because if I don't that network port disappears. Linux doesn't see it, windows doesn't see it, even the bios doesn't see it. I have to hard reset (using the switch on the psu) to get it back.
