00:14<W0rmF00d> what is the name of the package that automounts filesystems in /media/?
00:14<twb>W0rmF00d: something in gnome
00:14<twb>W0rmF00d: udisks or hal, I guess.
00:15-!-ALLurGroceries [] has quit [Read error: Connection reset by peer]
00:15<W0rmF00d>I don't think it is specific to gnome....I thought I remember it working from a console as well (without x11/gnome running)
00:15<twb>W0rmF00d: but you had gnome installed, right?

00:15-!-W0rmF00d is now known as WormFood
00:16<twb>That's why
00:16<WormFood>but what is the name of the package, do you know?
00:16<twb>I don't, sorry
00:16<twb>I know udisks/hal will be involved
00:17-!-fabrianchi [] has quit [Read error: Connection timed out]
00:18<WormFood>it is not udisks, unless that requires X11/gnome to be running to work (I'm working just in console right now)
00:18<twb>Didn't you just say it worked while on the console?
00:19<twb>Rather: what evidence do you have for that assertion
00:20-!-nadir [] has joined #debian
00:22<WormFood>I said I thought I remember it working from the console.....but I just fired up X11, and it does auto-mount, so I'm guessing my memory was faulty (or I have some other package doing that)
00:22<twb>IIRC what happens is udisks registers itself with udev, and when a disk arrives udisks probes it and then tells GNOME "there's a new USB disk called fred!"
00:23<twb>Then some gnome thing mounts it
00:23<twb>Looking for packages that depend on udisks would be a good start

01:27<yoshio>!xorg config
01:27<dpkg>From Lenny onwards, xorg mostly configures itself. Resolution is set by your monitor/graphics card (unless they're broken) or by your desktop environment or <xrandr>. From Squeeze, input hotplugging saves duplicating settings and restarting X after changes. The /etc/X11/xorg.conf file is usually no longer needed and is often blank. Manual configuration is still possible, see <xorg config lenny> <xorg config squeeze>.

01:33<king>could it be possible that debian disagrees with my motherboard?
01:33<king>!xorg config lenny
01:33<dpkg>In lenny, you can often use an <empty xorg.conf> but if you need to, you can use "dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg" to set your keyboard layout. If you have further things you wish to configure, use "X -configure" ("X -configure :1" if server is already active) to produce a xorg.conf template.
01:35-!-superjet_ [] has joined #debian

01:41-!-superjet_busy [] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
01:41<king>my screen res is all messed up
01:42<jm_>right and you want to specify a different resolution manually - just write it yourself
01:42<yoshio>king: in your /etc/X11/xorg.conf (which is probably empty, at least on squeeze), you just need a section like: SubSection "Display", modes "1024x768", EndSubSction -
01:43<king>if i try editing xorg.conf file directly my system crashes... i even had someone help me directly in person...
01:43<jm_>editing a file with an editor makes your system crash?
01:43<king>no, after i save the file, next time i reboot it fails to beet
01:43<king>i'm using lenny, btw
01:44<jm_>you mean somethign bad happens when X tries to start?
01:44<king>yes, i guess
01:45<jm_>just start it manually until you know it works, i.e. disable a display manager until then

01:46<king>\i, uh, don't really know how to do that, and i'm sure their is either a better way to deal with the problem, or i'll just deal with it for now
01:47<dpkg>Debian does not use a specific runlevel for graphical display managers by default. Just remove the dm package(s) with "aptitude remove xdm kdm wdm gdm gdm3 pdm slim". "update-rc.d xdm stop 20 2 3 4 5" and friends will also disable the dm. echo "false" >/etc/X11/default-display-manager, or just hit ctl-alt-fN to get to a console.
01:47<jm_>that echo false thing

01:50<jm_>well how do you intend to fix X if not like that?
01:50-!-jordan___ [] has joined #debian
01:50<king>i, uh, don't, its not so bad on a desktop

02:56<ilvecchioalex>I installed it a month ago as a netinst but without the graphic environment
02:57<ilvecchioalex>everything went good until yesterday I used tasksel to install the graphic env
02:57<ilvecchioalex>something went wrong I'm not sure exactly when during download I suppose
02:58<ilvecchioalex>but something has started to install since after I rebooted it can't find
02:58<ilvecchioalex>and stuck there

05:33<padski>SingAlong, there are two sorts of usb port: master and slave (or whatever they call them). master can supply power, slave can consume it. usb gadgets are for the slave side. the usb spec says (last i read) that you can only have one sort on a device (although there are devices that break that rule)

05:38<padski>depending on the device you are flashing, there is a risk you may flash it with something non-functioning. a good bootloader can make that a lot safer. otherwise you may be running the risk of "bricking" it

08:41<nrub>jm_: I thought I was running in X... using Konsole
08:41<nrub>SingAlong: I'm in KDE right now typing in Konsole
08:41<jm_>nrub: run xrandr as the same user that you started/logged in X
08:41<nrub>jm_: thanks that might be it
08:42<nrub>jm_: yeah I was using the root account, switched back to my regular user and it works :)
08:43<nrub>now I just need to figure out how to make xrandr recognize the second screen
08:43<SingAlong>nrub: isnt that automatic? atleast that so when it's my laptop
08:44<nrub>xrandr -q lists one screen (Screen 0)
08:44<cahoot>not using a proprietary videodriver?
08:44<nrub>cahoot: I have taken over this debian box from someone else. The video card is Matrox so I have no idea what's installed.
08:45<nrub>i was googling about it and saw some example using xrandr

13:44<MikeQ>I seem to have a wee little problem.
13:44-!-alienux [~theXman@] has quit [Quit: Leaving.]
13:44<MikeQ>When I install Debian from a USB key (used Unetbootin), the key gets recognized as sda, while the hard drive is recognized as sdb.
13:45<MikeQ>Now that obviously ensures general hilarity when GRUB tries to do it's thing post-install.
13:46<dpkg>[uuid] Universally Unique IDentifier, used to reference disk partitions (among other things). See currently known partition UUIDs with `blkid'. In /etc/fstab and /boot/grub/menu.lst, use "UUID=dead-beef-0420-etc" as the partition name. Helps to cope with device name changes such as hda->sda (<libata> transition) or changes in USB disk order discovery. <LVM> tools accept PV/VG/LV UUIDs as arguments, use {pv,vg,lv}display to acquire.
13:46<MikeQ>Do any of you have a quick sollution for that? Alas, my google-fu is to weak for me to find any other sollutions online.
13:47<MikeQ>Humm, that seem to be a possible way to do it.

16:20<mjt>now when i think about v4 and proper auth, i'm not sure i want to put krb5 server on my router - which is the only machine @home which is turned on 24x7 - because it faces the 'net and krb server is very important part, i'd rather set it up to _use_ some other krb server than let someone to crack it from outside. But there's no other machine which is up all the time, and setting one up just to be kerberos server is a bit too much.
16:21<mjt>so the prob isn't actually how easy to set it up, but something else.. ;)
