01:35<labradors>Have installed an Atheros-based wireless card in my up-to-date, Lenny server. Have tried using it with and without madwifi, but there is never a /dev/wlan0 or /dev/ath0. Thus, the wireless never shows up in ifconfig or iwconfig, but IS present in lspci. How may I create /dev/wlan0, or whatever is necessary to get this working? Thank you.

04:09<mattcen>Hi all. I'm using dnsmasq and have configured some CNAMEs, but while they are resolvable using dig or nslookup, they aren't used for making connections: http://paste.debian.net/101544/. If I tell dnsmasq to create an A record instead of a CNAME, it works fine. Can anybody explain this?

15:09<mjt>is any firmware needed on debian for rtl8169 cards?
15:10<abrotman>!rtl8169
15:10<dpkg>[r8169] the Realtek RTL-8169 Gigabit Ethernet driver, included in the mainline Linux kernel. For controller specific information, ask me about <rtl8101e>, <rtl8168d>. Several r8169 bugs were corrected in linux-2.6 2.6.26-21. A MDIO timing issue affecting DHCP operation (Debian bug #583139) was fixed in linux-2.6 2.6.26-24, ask me about <5.0.5>.
15:11<mjt>the driver contains some bits of firmware but it does not use kernel firmware loading interface

16:26<Jarlaxe>hi folk. I install a brother 7010 on a squeeze. I follow tuto provided by the brother's site. CUPS seems configured (the printer is recognised) but print test does not work (have to cancel it each time), scan function neither. http://welcome.solutions.brother.com/bsc/public_s/id/linux/en/instruction_prn1a.html
16:27<Jarlaxe>because i don't know, I tried with the lpr.deb + the cups.deb installed, then I tried with only the cups.deb. Any idea ?
16:29<jhutchins>Jarlaxe: There are a lot of different options on that page, it's hard to know what you actually did.
16:29<jhutchins>Jarlaxe: If you make the printer go offline - open the door or the paper tray or whatever - does cups see it? Is it USB?
16:30<Jarlaxe>jhutchins: I followed only the steps i am concerned : about debian, USB. At first, i forgot to plug the usb, but cups "recognised" the printer anyway (at least the driver)

20:09<cruzj>I have a Debian server which has Bind9 installed, I have added it to rc using update-rc.d, but when I restart the server bind does not start, and log does not show any intent to start bind
20:09<cruzj>any ideas?
20:10<shaggy_>I have 1 TB drive and a 250 if i want to use both as an encrypted backup storage what would be better SDB + SDC - > MDADM -> LUK -> LVM or ((SDB-> LUK) + (SDC ->LUK)) -> LVM ?
20:10<shaggy_>cruzj: try starting it manually via init script and see if that works.
20:10<zarchne>cruzj: you shouldn't have had to use update-rc.d
20:10<cruzj>yes shaggy, it works
20:10<cruzj>without any problem

20:11<shaggy_>ls -l /etc/rc?.d/bind9
20:12<cruzj>why not? isn't that the script to add the start services? update-rcd bind9 defaults
