#debian IRC Logs for 2010-12-09

---Logopened Thu Dec 09 00:00:00 2010
00:00<yoshio>kd123, once, long ago, reinstalled on top of an existing system (because I typed "rm *" in /usr/lib), haven't used it in years
00:00<yoshio>!debootstrap
00:00<dpkg>debootstrap can create a basic Debian system from scratch, without apt/dpkg. Useful for installing in a <chroot>. It is key to installing Debian GNU/Linux from a Unix/Linux system, ask me about <install guide>. http://wiki.debian.org/Debootstrap http://www.debian-administration.org/article/Installing_new_Debian_systems_with_debootstrap
00:02<kd123>yoshio: ah ok :) thanks

00:46<gsimmons>prem: AFAIK that's currently only possible with OO on Windows; the MDB database driver (for use in other platforms) is still being developed. You can access some content using utilities in the mdbtools package.
00:48<kd123>arg.... why when I debootstrap squeeze does it fail to download packages?

11:45<themill>s4br3: a couple of things: "aptitude update" doesn't take any arguments (it only refreshes the package list from the mirrors). All debian gives you is a googleearth packaging script that creates the deb for you -- re-run that packaging script to have it create an updated .deb that you can then install with dpkg -i.

15:23<pf>ok
15:24<jhutchins>Other distributions do use newer kernels. RedHat (RHEL) and SuSE have access to proprietary binaries that other distros don't, but you pay for that.
15:24<pf>can anyone do me a favour and help google what distro will work by default with the e1750 modem, not because im to lazy to do this myself but simply because Im to "dumb" to google for this
15:25<pf>is OpenSuse for free?
