00:15<Morty>Anyone know the minimum set of packages to get a virtual X11 server functional?
00:16<Morty>I'm trying to get x11vnc working with Xvnc on a bunch of headless servers.
00:16<Morty>I mostly have it working, except Xvnc exits immediately after startup unless I apt-get install kde first.
00:17<Morty>kde drags in a whole bunch of packages.
00:17<Morty>I'd rather have a more minimal package set.
00:18<nevyn>what do you want to display on X11?
00:18-!-mitnick [~mitnick@pc-49-22-239-201.cm.vtr.net] has joined #debian
00:18<nevyn>like XVNC is all well and good (well not really it's rather pointless imho but whatever)
00:18<nevyn>but you need X clients to display on it.
00:18<mitnick>its work
00:18<Morty>wireshark. Which is already installed.
00:18<mitnick>now i have my drivers
00:19<Tremolo>Good to hear, mitnick
00:19<mitnick>66017 frames in 5.0 seconds = 15203.254 FPS
00:19<mitnick>good?
00:19<Morty>Oh, duh.
00:19<mitnick>91198 frames in 5.0 seconds = 18239.471 FPS
00:19<Morty>I needed to apt-get install xterm.
00:19<Morty>Since xterm is the default X11 session control client.
00:19<nevyn>Morty: but you need like a windowmanager and xterm and a whole bunch of crack
00:20<Morty>nevyn: yeah, I've got twm installed.
00:20<nevyn>this still seems really rather rube-goldberg ish to me
00:20<nevyn>Morty: why not just use remote X?
00:20<nevyn>if your workstation is running X already.
00:21<Morty>nevyn: because X is very slow, especially over parts of our network.
00:21<Morty>Over WAN links (high latency, low bandwidth) positively painful.
00:21<Morty>VNC with compression is much faster.
00:21<nevyn>Tshark?
00:22<nevyn>is gonna be faster still..
00:22<Morty>tshark is good enough for me. Not good enough for our operations staff, who like GUI clients.
00:22<Morty>I'm reasonably certain I can make this work, anyway.
00:23<mitnick>what is the name of thethunderbirdon debian?
00:23<nevyn>when did operations staff start sucking?
00:23<Tremolo>mitnick: icedove?

00:26<Tremolo>Eh?
00:26<mitnick>do you know about of the patch of the 200 lines ?
00:26<Tremolo>Not firsthand, no.
00:28<mitnick>rgr
00:29<mitnick>how can add more icons to my debian?
00:30<mitnick>ins usr/share ?
00:31<Tremolo>If you don't need them globally, you should be able to just put them into a subdirectory in your home.

00:43<nickg>Is there a way with the debian installer to write a preseeding file that just goes so far threw the installation then lets the user finish the installation or an option I can pass to the installer that tells it to create a preseeding file from my current installation when it finishes like redhat does with anakonda automatically?

06:12<dominick>I'm copying a directory!
06:12<nadir>check the size of the directory where you copy the files to. That is what i would do.
06:13<nadir>call it /home/user/Test
06:13<nadir>du -sh /home/user/Test. Do it again after a few secs. Again... like that.
06:14<nadir>how big is the source?
06:14<dominick>nadir, that command shows me the sizes when they are files and the name when they are directories.
06:14<dominick>nadir, it's over 12 GB with a very large number of files!

17:19<kop>xeross: You can fuss around with fdisk or sfdisk or cfdisk or something, possibly, and get the offsets to the various partitions. Then you should be able to mount each partition loopback read-only and copy the data. (Or just dd the data at that point.) There's probably a tool that will do this for you but I don't know what it is. Perhaps debtags would help you search.
17:20<kop>xeross: Likely parted will do the trick. It does everything.
