16:25<strstrep>Why use a chainsaw when all you need is a knife?

18:50<FoxM>hi all. I have noticed that when I try to play a DVD using the commmand 'mplayer dvd:// ' the message "libdvdread: Could not open /dev/dvd" appears. I then create a symbolic link to the real device and mplayer works, but when I restart the machine, the /dev/dvd link is gone. How can I make it permanent?

23:10<acu>OK so tar is still the king
23:10<kop>acu: There may be a way to bootstrap straight into a debian-live image that's not on it's own partition.
23:11<jester45>can grub mount a file inside a partition as the root?
23:11<kop>acu: cpio will also do multiple volumes, but I've always found it ... different.
23:11<acu>anyhow - I can have a usb stick - boot live - and tar it to a cd ?

23:11<kop>jester45: That's what initramfs is.
23:12<kop>acu: Sure. Use debian-live on a usb stick and have it restore off of multiple cds/dvds/etc.

23:13<kop>acu: (Although if I were doing it I'd have rsync/dirvish/rsnapshot/mycustomscriptIlikebetter do regular backup over the network and have the restore restore over the network from that.)
23:14<kop>acu: I do have a script I like better because it does push and pull.
23:15<kop>acu: tarring to a cd is odd though, because you need to format an iso fs to burn to the media. You can't write directly. Tar-ring from a cd is easy, for restore.
23:16<kop>jester45: But to be fair, it's not grub that's doing the initramfs.
23:19<acu>kop: now I remember - I tar it to hard disk in chunks then burned it to CDs

23:34<acu>also no shut down from KDE - that's annoying
