08:23<ganeshp>hi all, I am looking for an advise. That is I am using debian amd64 on my desktop with intel core2 duo processor, 4 GB DDR2 ram and nvidia Geforce motherboard. As of now I could see standard debian installation has already configured nouveau and experimental 3D drivers for me and I am able to run few 3D games now, but with a choppy output. Overall I am happy with the performance. I wanted to know whether it is very much required to install the Nvidia
08:23<ganeshp> proprietary drivers in such cases, or continue with the existing setup.
08:24<valdyn>ganeshp: you can already see that its not required

08:25<nevyn>better performance
08:25<gsimmons>ganeshp: The "choppy output" is the result of the software rendering.
08:25<nevyn>freedom is more valuable than performance.

10:34<themill>!bt4
10:34<dpkg>BackTrack is not Debian and is not supported in #debian (ask me about <based on debian>). Try http://www.backtrack-linux.org/ or #backtrack-linux on irc.freenode.net instead. BackTrack is a Linux distribution based on <Ubuntu> Intrepid (as of BackTrack 4), previously <SLAX>. Derived from merging two penetration-testing distributions: WHAX (formerly WHOPPIX) and Auditor Security Linux.

13:20<toru>is there a way to not install certain packages with the dvd, or remove them without uninstalling gnome?
13:20<toru>for example i don't want transmission, so when i try to uninstall it, it tells me i have to uninstall gnome.
13:21<SynrG>damien: install the pinentry-curses package first

13:22<damien>SynrG: wow nice, how could I have known that? thanks
13:22<SynrG>damien: that's not a workaround. that's the solution. you should learn to read a package's dependencies when you run up against problems like this. it accepts a number of alternatives ... it's just that the gtk version is listed first.
13:22<damien>I see
13:22<SynrG>the first alternative will be used if no other package is already on your system that satisfies the dependency
13:22<damien>there are packages with a -nox separated version, I thought it would have been the same here

13:24<damien>ok, I will know for the next time
13:25<toru>also whenever i put in a thumb drive it gives me an error that it can't mount it, but i can mount it manually just fine.

15:14<MTecknology>SynrG: I have my own really tiny kernel config that i've been usign for ubuntu; it results in a 2.0MB monolithic kernel that works wonderfully; it doesn't work right in debian
15:14<MTecknology>SynrG: it's weird; when I use it, boot hangs at waiting for /dev to populate even though it populates fine
15:16<SynrG>ah. had you simply wanted updated drivers or something, i'd have directed you differently. if you're looking to make a highly customized kernel config work on debian, well ... good luck :)

I have personal photos and such on the device etc. I would prefer it be over written then someone access the stuff. I saw the article(or one similar) to the one you spoke about. 23:49<jeremyS>It's right at boot
23:49<jeremyS>like, just after linux starts
23:49<jeremyS>I've searched for the drive name in /etc/ and found some useful things

23:54<jeremyS>yeah
23:55<jeremyS>I realize it's my swap

23:56<ganeshp>Hi all, I have installed debian amd64 on my desktop and I have two questions. I wanted to know whether the standard installation is sufficient enough from security perspective or we must install mandatory access controls like - selinux or apparmour on debian home computer systems. Second, to install nvidia proprietary drivers do we need to uninstall existing open source drivers (incl gallium 3d drivers). Kindly advice.
23:56<jeremyS>I thought I did:
