00:14<jrabbit>how can you get the option of installign the package's upstream configure file again?

00:16<tsoliman>I think you delete it and reinstall
00:16<tsoliman>but I am not sure
00:16<tsoliman>how about you move it and reinstall?
00:16<dpkg>The reason you have to use dpkg --force-confmiss is because whenever your config files (<conffiles>) are gone, dpkg assumes you deleted them on purpose, and that you want them to stay deleted. You can also reinstall them using the following apt-get line: apt-get -o DPkg::Options::="--force-confmiss" --reinstall install <packagename>; or using aptitude, aptitude -o DPkg::Options::="--force-confmiss" reinstall <packagename>.

02:40<drayakir>Hey guys. After deciding to switch over to OSS, I hit a bit of a snag. I remove alsa, but the oss did not install over it.
02:40<hemanth>any hacker tried installing drivers for ATI HD Radeon 3200 on stable ? (Catalyst)
02:40<drayakir>When I try to run aumix, it tells me that there's nothing in /dev/mixer
02:41<drayakir>During boot, it says that there's no kernel modules for oss. So, I'm guessing installing the kernel module for oss4 would do it. Is that correct?
02:42<vook>drayakir: what chipset ?
02:42<drayakir>And if it is correct, how likely am I to kill my system? Should I create a backup of the current kernel on a flashdrive?

08:53<chonger>ah, ok. --no-install-recommends?
08:54<chonger>and out of curiosity, how do I turn that off systemwide? I know what packages I want and don't want (as long as it doesn't get me into dependency hell)
08:54<petemc>you would have to include that every time you run apt-get, you can disable permanently in apt.conf

08:55<babilen>!apt recommends
08:55<dpkg>APT installs recommended packages by default since Lenny. To disable once, "aptitude -R install packagename" or "apt-get --no-install-recommends install packagename". To disable permanently, echo "APT::Install-Recommends no;" > /etc/apt/apt.conf.d/no-recommends. By not installing "recommended" packages, you will miss the standard functionality they provide. Squeeze's <D-I> installs recommended packages by default. See <why recommends>
08:55<babilen>!why recommends
08:55<dpkg>From lenny onwards, apt-get and aptitude both install "Recommended" packages by default. From <policy> section 7.2, Recommends, "declares a strong, but not absolute, dependency. The Recommends field should list packages that would be found together with this one in all but unusual installations." You're not that unusual, trust us. By not installing "recommended" packages you will be missing functionality.
08:56<babilen>chonger: I would rather expect that you installed a large metapackage such as Gnome that pulls in openoffice. I would recommend to remove the metapackages you don't want, rather than explicitly disabling the installation of recommended packages.

09:01<babilen>chonger: So you have the "gnome" metapackage installed. Metapackages are packages that don't contain anything themselves, but merely declare dependencies on other packages. The "gnome" metapackage is the largest of the gnome related metapackages and you might want to remove it.
09:01<babilen>!install gnome
09:01<dpkg>To install GNOME: install the 'gnome' package to install everything, 'gnome-desktop-environment' for GNOME as defined by upstream, 'gnome-core' for a bit less and 'gnome-session' for the basic components actually needed to run a GNOME session. You will need Xorg installed as well, ask me about <install x>.
09:02<babilen>chonger: If you look above ^^^ there are other/smaller metapackages available. I would install one of those (aptitude install gnome-session) and run "aptitude remove gnome" -- That will most likely remove software you actually want to keep. You can mark these as intentionally (i.e. not-automatically) installed by running "aptitude unmarkauto PKG1…PKGN"

14:09<R33D3M33R>so i will hardly remember everything, it had 60 lines :(
14:09<Karburator>File can be recovered as long as there was not anything written to "it's place on the hard drive" ...
14:09<babilen>R33D3M33R: Which filesystem do you use?
14:10<R33D3M33R>i think it's ext4
14:10<babilen>R33D3M33R: I can only say it again: The most important step right now is to *stop using the system*
14:10<Karburator>If you followed kop's advice and remount your system read only, you may still have a chance to get it back
14:10<babilen>R33D3M33R: Yes, remount it read-only
14:11<R33D3M33R>well, it's the home partition, so it doesn't want to unmount, can I force it somehow and not break the running programs?
14:11<Karburator>mount -o remount,ro /mountpoint
14:11<R33D3M33R>mount: /home is busy
14:12<babilen>R33D3M33R: You then want to look into tools such as extundelete, magicrescue, photorec ... Not sure how they work with ext4 though
14:12<R33D3M33R>i already closed every program that could write to it, except pidgin
14:12<kop>R33D3M33R: e2undel is a package that claims to be able to help.

14:15<babilen>R33D3M33R: Really, turn off the system. Create an image (with dd) of the partition in question and work on copies of that image. You can then try different undelete tools and strategies.

21:25<the|Navigator>I just tried netselect-apt and let it generate me a new sources.list file, however I'm slightly unsure about the generated file. It is considerably shorter. Can anyone tell me if I'm going to end up with missing packages/sources if I take its advice?

21:26<the|Navigator>the old file has deb and deb-src lines for 'squeeze main', 'squeeze-updates main' and the security 'squeeze/updates main'. The generated file has an entry for 'stable main contrib non-free' and another for security 'stable main contrib non-free'.

21:38<the|Navigator>the thing above the -------, as listed, is the current sources.list

21:38<the|Navigator>I should point out the new server is less than 3ms from me, since the server is not US based.
21:40<the|Navigator>okay, so a simple replacement of stable with squeeze would be sufficient?
21:40<abrotman>using the IP is probably not a great idea ... but that's your issue
