01:05<dpkg>#debian is primarily a support channel for Debian users. Please keep the discussions in #debian on-topic and take longer discussions and non-support questions to #debian-offtopic. Imagine the chaos if each of the hundreds of people in the channel felt the need to wander off topic for a few minutes every day.

02:49<bluenemo>wacheng, if you are completly new to linux you might want to start with ubuntu(.com) its more easy for starters. debian is more of a distro for professional usage
02:49<jm_>ahh nouveau probably doesn't support it, so use nvidia binary-only driver in squeeze
02:50<bluenemo>and for linux, if you should get a choice when buying a new computer, take an ati card :)

02:53<jm_>!nvidia
02:53<dpkg>Install either <nouveau> (no 3D support) or the appropriate proprietary driver package for your card. For GeForce 6xxx through to some GeForce 400 series, ask me about <nvidia dkms> or <nvidia m-a>; for older series, ask about <nvidia dkms-173xx> <nvidia dkms-96xx>. For oldstable, see <nvidia lenny>. nvidia.com packages are _not_ supported in #debian, please join #nvidia (irc.freenode.net). http://wiki.debian.org/NvidiaGraphicsDrivers
02:53<bluenemo>wacheng, are you new to linux? (no offense meant, just sounded to me like that)
02:53<jm_>go to the wiki page and follow instructions
02:54<wacheng>Yes , I'm new

02:57<bluenemo>wacheng, then you really want to visit ubuntu.com download the following: http://www.ubuntu.com/desktop/get-ubuntu/download take version 10.04, i'm quite sure most stuff will work out of the box. gnome is with it by default. if you are more experienced with linux and begin to dislike ubuntu give debian another try :)
02:58<bluenemo>the difference is just that ubuntu is made for beginners or those that dont want to know about linux internals and debian is made for professionals and linux freaks. ubuntu is based on debian btw, so its internals are quite similar to debian.

13:36<dpkg>( The great thing about running sid is that, when it breaks you get to keep ALL the pieces!! )
13:36<Bemorph>Heh
13:37<sney>!udev 620995
13:37<dpkg>udev 167-1 in sid is currently broken, because it tries to use /run created by base-files 6.2 which is not yet supported by the initscripts version in sid. Downgrade udev, libudev, libgudev-1.0-0 to 166-1 and base-files to 6.1 and remove /run to fix it. Install <apt-listbugs> and see #620995, #620191, #621036 and http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2011/04/msg00353.html for details.

15:47<abcd82>daemonkeeper: i compiled xfce 4.8 and some goodies, want to install them on older machine without searching for every lib, idea is to install debian base + custom packages so that deps would be pulled automatically
15:52<daemonkeeper>abcd82: As said, its dh_shlibdeps which calls dpkg-shlibdeps on your behalf. It is not too hard to make dpkg-shlibdeps you would build a Debian package. mkdir foobar; cd foobar; mkdir debian; touch debian/control; dpkg-shlibdeps -O /bin/bash

19:18<dpkg>udev 167-1 in sid is currently broken, because it tries to use /run created by base-files 6.2 which is not yet supported by the initscripts version in sid.

23:43<bluenemo_>when i chroot within a script and mount -o bind all the stuff and then finally chroot, will all following commands within the script then be exectued in the chroot environment, even if the script itself is located in the filesystem of the system i was before?

23:43<eightyeight>bluenemo_: yes. if you chroot, then you are in the chrooted environment/jail, and everything will be executed there
