00:45<kop>EmleyMoor: There's some notes regarding such things at YMMV. Mostly it's about throwing away bounces that didn't come from you but you may find it works on delay notifications as well. (I think it does for me but I've not thought about it in a long time.)

00:48<sney>EmleyMoor: I have had success with figuring out where it *actually* came from and sending them a scary cease and desist letter. did you know that falsifying the origin of an electronic message falls under the US Code's definition of wire fraud, and has some pretty hefty fines and sentences attached?
00:48<notr00t>i'm trying to get iptables to redirect all outgoing TCP packets into tor's transparent proxy port (9040) and all udp packets on port 53 (DNS) to tor-dns
00:48<notr00t>but even though iptables appears to accept the rule changes, packets still aren't being redirected
00:49-!-danols [] has joined #debian
00:49<kop>notr00t: I find working with ferm more sane than iptables itself. But I can't say that it would easily solve your problem.
00:49<EmleyMoor>sney: I'm sure there are similar laws over here too...
00:49<sney>notr00t: for specific configuration stuff like that you'll probably have better luck in #netfilter on

00:49<danols>hey all
00:49<notr00t>EmleyMoor, I'm not familiar with the context of what you're talking about, but I believe that anyone facing such a charge could successfully raise a defense that the First Amendment protects anonymous speech
00:50<notr00t>and that any statute which prohibits anonymous speech (i.e. by requiring truthful originating information in packets) is facially unconstitutional
00:50<sney>EmleyMoor: spammers et al. tend not to notice or care where you are actually located unless it's a national FQDN, so even though I'm in canada, threatening them with US federal law works pretty well! I think they are generally out of china
00:50<notr00t>you'd have better luck with the CAN-SPAM act

00:51<notr00t>the other thing you could do is return the favor by sending out ridiculous amounts of stuff with their IP's on it

00:58<notr00t>so unfortunately i have to be inhuman

01:07<danols>hi guys ok my putty session is 'not' rendering correctly some character in aptitude or mutt are like â¬â>Re: T
01:07<danols>any idea ?
01:07<kop>danols: bad $TERM
01:07<danols>kop: ? sorry ?
01:08<danols>echo $TERM returns xterm
01:08<danols>what should it be set to?
01:08<kop>danols: There's a $TERM env variable setting terminal type. This sounds more like a putty problem so you might want to go to a putty channel.
01:08<danols>it's a server on the net so no GUI on it
01:08<kop>danols: Depends on putty's terminal emulation.
01:09<danols>so xterm should sill render properly even if $TERM is set to xterm yes ?
01:09<kop>danols: ? It's your terminal emulator, putty, doing the rendering.
01:10<danols>ok so putty is not rendering right yes?
01:10<kop>danols: Both ends need to match.
01:10<danols>i'll check the settings
01:10<danols>thanks kop

01:25<danols>the other server does not have a locale set to UTF-8

To install and use: wget && tar xvjf wgetpaste-2.17.tar.bz2 && cd wgetpaste-2.17 You can then use it as ./wgetpaste; e.g. dmesg | ./wgetpaste It is also safe to copy to /usr/local/bin for easier use.

06:59<ayaka>exaltis, as dpkg
06:59<arand>exaltis: Debian cut I guess you are referring to?
06:59<dpkg>[stable] The status of a Debian release when no packages will be added or new versions introduced, and changes will only fix security issues and critical bugs. Packages can be removed in rare circumstances. The current stable version of Debian is Squeeze (6.0); ask me about <releases>. Security bugs are fixed in stable by backporting the fix to the current version (ask me about <security backports>).
07:00<exaltis>ayaka: yeah, cut, that was it
07:00<ayaka>stephan, you should compile it you youself
07:00<exaltis>thanks for the CUT tip
07:00<stephan>yea but where to grab the sources?
07:01<exaltis>(don't have time to play mix and match with testing/unstable)

12:09<sney>it should provided it was preserved when the archive was created

12:11<sney>if it's from a different system, UID/GID will not match anyway
12:11<edbian>sney, root would right?
12:12<edbian>sney, That's the idea here
12:12<sney>of course, if you untar it *as* root, that'll be taken care of anyway
12:14<edbian>That would defeat the purpose. Here is the idea. You have two machines. A and B. You create a file on A, set the setuid bit, make it owned by uid 0 (root) and then you tar it up, preserving permissions and transfer it to machine B. You can then untar it (again preserving permissions) and you now have a root level executable and machine B even though you don't have root access on that machine.
12:14<edbian>executable on* machine B...
12:15<edbian>Perhaps --owner=NAME
12:15<sney>I'm unsure as to whether a normal user can create files owned by root
12:16<edbian>I *think* I have untarred things before and they came out owned as root.
