00:21<_pg_>can someone help me use jcal to set dead zones or calibrate my controller?
00:22<reklipz>most browsers know how to use the file:// protocol...
00:22<nyov>reklipz: true, too
00:22<_pg_>jscal rather=
00:23<reklipz>HTML is just a convenient language to markup docs in; pdf isn't as nice, and text/plain is just hard on the documenter

00:33-!-tensorpudding [~tensorpud@] has joined #debian
00:34<nyov>reklipz: the good ol' days. back when I played terminal velocity and hellbender I also had a rather nice joystick
00:34<_pg_>nyov, the problem is that the cintroller has sticks that are somewhat loose because it has been used, so the input needs to be adjusted through the use of something called deadzones, areas on the axis that dont register as input
00:35<reklipz>_pg_: I understand what you're after, but I have no experience with jscal, nor a wired xbox 360 controller to help play along
00:35<nyov>_pg_: i know deadzones, and that doesn't work?
00:35<reklipz>perhaps the jscal mailing list, irc channel, or other, while you're waiting for some real-time support?
00:35<_pg_>i have no idea how to create them
00:36<_pg_>theres something about coefficients and broken lines-its all a little much
00:37<_pg_>but perhaps there is a #gamepad...
00:38<nyov>yeah sorry, out of my leage
00:39<_pg_>thanks anyways fellas

00:42<nozzy>Konnichiwa. Can anyone tell me a good gnome application to notify the title of music currently playing by totem?(I'm currently using debian sid.)

00:42-!-christopher [] has joined #debian
00:43<reklipz>nozzy: I'm not sure if totem implements any notification protocols, but I know libnotify is common
00:43<reklipz>there are growl ports too
00:44-!-frewo64__ [] has joined #debian
00:44<nozzy>Unfortunatly,totem doesn't have any feature using notification protocols. However,
00:44<reklipz>totem apparently interacts with libnotify; bug reports saying that "totem suppresses all libnotify popups"; perhaps this bug has been fixed.
00:45<nozzy>oh! I'm missing that information. Will you please tell me the web links of that topic?
00:45<nyov>totem can use multiple backends, not?
00:46<reklipz> --
00:46<reklipz>nyov: looks like this may be a totem -> X/gnome and X/gnome -> libnotify interaction, though
00:47<reklipz>all I can say: vlc plays nicely with libnotify, and has support for popups internally as well.
00:48<nozzy>reklipz: I know vlc player , however,
00:48<nozzy>totem is default application to play movie, music, I think. So
00:49<nozzy>I want to use totem ...

00:50<locsmif>Just an icon to click on is all I need.
00:50<locsmif>But.. preferably, in the top panel
00:50<nozzy>reklipz: Thank you for help.
00:50<reklipz>nozzy: yep, good luck!

00:53<nyov>nozzy: yes
00:53<nozzy>nyov: I'm using totem with gstreamer.
00:54<nyov>and I recall gstreamer supports dbus, so maybe there is a way

01:52<nyov>maybe it can't connect to the instance
01:53<nyov>i had some trouble with it running as my user and systemwide. plenty fun there
01:53<nevyn>george_: did you follow the pulseaudio howto?
01:53<nevyn>don't run pulse systemwide.
01:54<nevyn>unless you need multiseat.

01:56<nevyn>nyov: it's a info leakage path. between users.
01:57<nevyn>nyov: it makes a bunch of things really complicated.
01:57<nyov>ok i know that, but it's not like i have multi user accounts on my notebook
01:57<george_>wow i got it working
01:57<george_>turns out it was muted from the main controller
01:57<nevyn>nyov: you shouldn't need to manually run it ever.
01:57<nevyn>your desktop should do that for you.
01:58<george_>i used pavu controller to unmute
01:58<nyov>nevyn: it runs in my .xinitrc
01:58<nevyn>pavucontrol is actually pretty nice
01:58<nevyn>nyov: right.
01:58<nevyn>that's sane
01:59<george_>nyov: let me tell u, i've been having so much trouble with .xinitrc, anytime I put in things to execute and run the startx command my window manager never starts
01:59-!-grell [] has joined #debian
01:59<nevyn>george_: the things have to return to xinitrc
01:59<nevyn>so pulseaudio needs to be run in daemon mode (with -D)
01:59<nevyn>or put nohup in front of them.
01:59<nyov>you run them as cmd &
02:00<george_>ok i just killed pulseaudio and sound went with it lol
02:00<nyov>or so
02:00<nyov>george_: yeah it does
02:00<nevyn>cmd & works as well
02:00<george_>so should i get rid of alsa?
02:00<nevyn>but for pulse pulseaudio -D is better
02:00<nyov>nevyn: sorry i was wrong, it's still running as system user ^^ haha
02:00<nevyn>george_: no.
02:00<george_>what do I need it for?
02:01<nyov>for sound?
02:01<george_>so pulseaudio isn't for the sound?
02:01<nevyn>apps, for making your soundcard work,
02:01<nevyn>yes it is.
02:01<nevyn>but it uses alsa.
02:01<george_>they're both for it
02:01<nyov>pulseaudio sits on top of ALSA, alsa has the sound card drivers
02:01<nevyn>george_: pulseaudio is a multiplexing and management layer over alsa.
02:02-!-an [~an@] has joined #debian
02:02<nevyn>it allows multiple things to play sound at the same time (multiplexing)

02:03<nevyn>so you can move a playing sound between soundcards
02:03<nevyn>or to another system
02:03<nevyn>nyov: meh it serves a purpose
02:03-!-GeorgeSebastian [~georgeSeb@] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
02:03<nyov>yeah it's just so troublesome
02:04<nevyn>nyov: depends if you need/want the features
02:04<nevyn>like volumecontrol per stream/app
02:04<nyov>if I don't run it as systemuser, i get no realtime, my mpd starts too early, stuff like that
02:04<george_>nevyn: to another system :\
02:04<nevyn>realtime should be assigned to the audio group.
02:04<nevyn>george_: sure.
02:04<nevyn>so routing audio over the network
02:04<george_>through network?
02:04<nyov>yeah that's actually pretty nice
02:04<nevyn>so I can play sound from my laptop on the mediacentre pc

02:06<nevyn>and through the stereo.
02:06<george_>nevyn: is it really complicated?
02:06<nevyn>not really
02:06<george_>so you're basically streaming audio
02:06<nevyn>the howto pretty much covers everything required.
02:07<george_>so if the sound adjustment isn't loud enough for me in pavucontrol, can I just use alsamixer? lol
02:08<nyov>ah and I had to unlink the alsa pcm from the pa volume whatever, because it would cut off sound at ~20% volume otherwise
02:08-!-grell [] has left #debian []
02:08<nyov>now I get to manage two volume sliders
02:09<nyov>but works better on another system/soundcard
02:09<george_>alright so it seems pavucontrol causes pulseaudio to start?
02:10<nyov>at least for me it did
02:10<nyov>it's in my .xinitrc too
02:11<nyov>so it will also restart if it dies
02:11<george_>alright cool, so the default sound adjustment is through pavucontrol and if I want to change it more through alsamixer?

02:12<nyov>there is not much in there
02:12<george_>just so i can see example
02:12<nevyn>pavucontrol has two tabs...
02:12<nevyn>or playback
02:12<nevyn>and output which is the sink volumes
02:14<george_>nevyn: lol weird thing is I'm missing some icons in pavucontrol, odd lol

04:19<quietone>hi all, can anyone help me get sound to TV via HDMI? I've run out of ideas of what to try
04:22<mjr>dutchfish, sounds like you want to put an entry for him on B..Z in /etc/security/access.conf disallowing login from A
04:22<mjr>'course, this would also disallow if he's logged in locally
04:22-!-pipo [] has joined #debian
04:22<mjr>that would be more ... kludgy to arrange in a decently secure manner
04:23<dutchfish>quietone, it depends alot on the adapter you have and what it supports, most hdmi i know do support sound but not in conjunction with HD, i use spdif for that instead.

04:30<costas_>quietone, have you checked your mixer?
04:30<mjr>well, then it sounds like you want to have ssh from A to B..Z per default disallowed by iptables on host A, and run, possibly through pam_exec, on host A for local logins (or for all logins, while adding a check if it's local, of course) a script that will add an exception for that user to the rule. Remove the exception on logout. Recall that if they're left logged in locally, the exception remains; time it out if you need to.

04:31<dutchfish>quietone, you need latest snd-hda-intel you could try your luck with kernel

05:28<dutchfish>quietone, i have to run soon, but, you should be able to have sound then, check with speaker-test (it has options for choosing which device) and if that doesnt work, reset your mixer settings (gnome or kde)

05:30<quietone>dutchfish, I just tried again with speaker-test. Silence. Why does the mixer have two boxes IEC958?
05:31<dutchfish>quietone, restarting alsa-utils is needed when altering asound.conf (/etc/init.d/alsa-utils restart)
05:31<quietone>dutchfish, been doing that too.
05:32<dutchfish>quietone, the mixer settings get confused when altering devices and still have the old settings for the devices no longer there. hence you need to reset the mixer settings.
05:33<dutchfish>quietone, i have to run now, i am sure someone in this channel knows how to do that for either kde or gnome

If unavailable: 1) Add ONLY a <deb-src> line for sid to /etc/apt/sources.list 2) enable debian-backports (see <bdo>) 3) aptitude update; aptitude install build-essential; aptitude build-dep packagename; apt-get -b source packagename; 4) install the resultant debs.
