07:34<mekt>for FF4, plugins are now run in a plugin container in extra process, so i think none should crash firefox.

I would create a file in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/ (/msg dpkg xorg.conf.d) with a suitable Monitor section in which your specify HorizSync and VertRefresh. See "man xorg.conf", "/msg dpkg configure x" and "/msg dpkg xorg config squeeze" for details.

13:48<Max1>I'm planning to run snort on a debian 6 server, so I've added a 2nd PCI NIC card (10 / 100 / 1000) after installation. Since my router can manage Gbit connections, I want to change the name of the on board device (10 / 100) to eth1 (and use it as the promiscuous instance, which will be connected to a 10BaseT hub). With my little experience about networking on linux, I just tried to make some changes and finished by messing all up. So, my question, which is the w

18:48<dpkg>Following a release, testing tends to be more of a developer's playground and a <moving target>. If you have to ask how to do this, ask yourself if you know enough about Debian packaging to run a non-stable release yet. From /etc/apt/sources.list, remove stable-specific lines like squeeze-updates and backports, then change squeeze to wheezy. "apt-get update && apt-get dist-upgrade". 19:44<william>I am going right now to see the bug

Use wnpp-alert (from the <devscripts> package) to see what packages you are using that are in need of help.
19:46<SynrG>the package seems to meet the license requirement, and the bug mentions no particular technical challenges to it entering debian ... so i really don't know why there has been no progress. it may be that the original person who filed the bug lost interest.

21:04<thinsabre>Hey all. Looking for some clarification on encrypting /home and using swap space. First of all, Ubu noob here so I'm a little curious why it took 6hours to encrypt my laptop drive when it takes Ubu minutes. Also though, I was thinking of setting up a swap space but setting it to not use it, then re-enabling later. I'm worried about security but the ram is too low to survive without swap. Thanks.

21:11<r4co0n>Morning guys. When I just powered on my PC, the boot log reminded me of my last fail. I was setting up a uuid ntfs mount in fstab, that worked nicely. it still does, but not at boot time, seems all file systems get mounted before usb devices are connected, reasonably, but in my case bothersome. what can I do to work around that?

23:36<aussa>how do I know where it is trying to find it?
23:36<dennisthetiger>Also, doing a quick check for freewrl in the repos, octave-vrml seems to know the trick.
23:37<dennisthetiger>aussa: 'locate libFreeWRL'
23:37<dennisthetiger>...no, wait, you know that answer
23:37<nevyn>dennisthetiger: can you pastebin the output of dmesg?

23:43<nevyn>~~hrm
23:43<nevyn>there should be a device allocation after that.
23:44<dennisthetiger>nevyn: Yeah, that's what I thought. Figuring that the enclosure is not compatible, or this drive isn't giving out any more cycles.
23:44<nevyn>do you know the drive works?
23:44<nevyn>do you know the drive isn't too big for the usb bridge?

23:45<dennisthetiger>nevyn: The drive *sort of* works, it's throwing sector errors and apparently about to die. As for the bridge, not sure.

23:46<dennisthetiger>nevyn: Enclosure's user guide (a small leaflet about the size of an index card) mentions that it'll work in Windows 7, so that tells me it shouldn't have capacity problems.

23:51<r4co0n>The latest daily sid net i386 install looks for files on the iso that arent there, apparently, but got no time to check md5 right now, gotta do stuff society expects me to. http://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/daily-builds/sid_d-i/arch-latest/i386/iso-cd/debian-testing-i386-netinst.iso
23:52<nevyn>dennisthetiger: you may be right it seems odd tho
23:52<dennisthetiger>nevyn: It does, yeah.
23:52<nevyn>dennisthetiger: try it under a livecd?
23:52<nevyn>dennisthetiger: do you have a stock kernel?
23:52<dennisthetiger>nevyn: Don't have a livecd handy, but that's easily solvable. I did some recovery under lenny rescue mode, though, last night. =)
23:53<dennisthetiger>nevyn: Yeah, 2.6.32-5, I believe, in Squeeze.
23:54<r4co0n>should i update to sid from wheezy to get a (sometimes) running system?

23:57<r4co0n>and i kinda know i should be able to get to sid by dist-upgrading

23:57<nevyn>lemme try that again
23:57<dennisthetiger>r4co0n: From what I gather on sid, if you're going to do it, one of the requirements are a bottle of your favorite headache remedy.
23:57<nevyn>!sid upgrade
23:57<dpkg>Repeat after me: Sid is NOT AN UPGRADE! Sid is meant for developers and testers, so stay away from it if you're neither. Use <stable> or <testing> instead. See also <sid upgrade test>.
23:58<r4co0n>sid is dangerous - backronym
23:58<dennisthetiger>Yeah, pretty much.

23:59<dpkg>If you can't work out how to upgrade your machine to testing (or unstable), then this is probably a good indication that you (a) don't know enough about Debian to be able to solve the inevitable problems you will face and (b) you don't know how to use google or documentation to answer really easy questions. If either of these apply, you shouldn't be using unstable (or even testing) and we're not going to help you do so.
