13:48<Max1>I'm planning to run snort on a debian 6 server, so I've added a 2nd PCI NIC card (10 / 100 / 1000) after installation. Since my router can manage Gbit connections, I want to change the name of the on board device (10 / 100) to eth1 (and use it as the promiscuous instance, which will be connected to a 10BaseT hub). 19:43<william>thanks SynrG for that orietation, I do not know much about this things
19:44<william>I am going right now to see the bug
19:44<SynrG>the bug is the ITP (intent to package) filed by the person who was going to package it for debian.
19:45<dpkg>For information on packages which are not in Debian but you think should be, check the Work-Needing and Prospective Packages list at (refinable list at Use wnpp-alert (from the <devscripts> package) to see what packages you are using that are in need of help.
19:46<SynrG>the package seems to meet the license requirement, and the bug mentions no particular technical challenges to it entering debian ... so i really don't know why there has been no progress. it may be that the original person who filed the bug lost interest.

23:22<dennisthetiger>Good evening. I have an external USB PATA enclosure - and while USB sees the enclosure connection, I can't seem to find the disk itself. The disk is powered and spinning, and dmesg tells me it sees the device -essentially, it gives me some more info than lsusb does. How do I locate this?

23:43<nevyn>there should be a device allocation after that.
23:44<dennisthetiger>nevyn: Yeah, that's what I thought. Figuring that the enclosure is not compatible, or this drive isn't giving out any more cycles.

23:45<nevyn>dennisthetiger: some of the early usb<>ide adapters had odd limits on supported disks

23:46<dennisthetiger>nevyn: Enclosure's user guide (a small leaflet about the size of an index card) mentions that it'll work in Windows 7, so that tells me it shouldn't have capacity problems.

23:50<dennisthetiger>nevyn: No dice. I'm starting to think this enclosure just doesn't want to give Linux the time of day beyond a hello.
23:51<r4co0n>The latest daily sid net i386 install looks for files on the iso that arent there, apparently, but got no time to check md5 right now, gotta do stuff society expects me to.
23:52<nevyn>dennisthetiger: you may be right it seems odd tho

23:52<nevyn>dennisthetiger: do you have a stock kernel?
23:52<dennisthetiger>nevyn: Don't have a livecd handy, but that's easily solvable. I did some recovery under lenny rescue mode, though, last night. =)
23:53<dennisthetiger>nevyn: Yeah, 2.6.32-5, I believe, in Squeeze.
23:54<r4co0n>should i update to sid from wheezy to get a (sometimes) running system?

23:55<dennisthetiger>r4co0n: Squeeze is pretty recent, why not just run that?

23:57<nevyn>lemme try that again
23:57<dennisthetiger>r4co0n: From what I gather on sid, if you're going to do it, one of the requirements are a bottle of your favorite headache remedy.
23:57<nevyn>!sid upgrade
23:57<dpkg>Repeat after me: Sid is NOT AN UPGRADE! Sid is meant for developers and testers, so stay away from it if you're neither. Use <stable> or <testing> instead. See also <sid upgrade test>.
23:58<r4co0n>sid is dangerous - backronym

23:59<nevyn>!sid upgrade test
23:59<dpkg>If you can't work out how to upgrade your machine to testing (or unstable), then this is probably a good indication that you (a) don't know enough about Debian to be able to solve the inevitable problems you will face and (b) you don't know how to use google or documentation to answer really easy questions. If either of these apply, you shouldn't be using unstable (or even testing) and we're not going to help you do so.
