02:26<phoenix11>Just downloading Debian 6 at the moment - I am a very new linux user but I was told by a friend that I wouldn't have to re-install for a long time if I get Debian
02:26<phoenix11>so that's why I'm here!
02:27<devil>and the question is? :)

02:34<diego>yeah, but I cannot use dd if=/dev/urandom of=/dev/hda cause that will erase everything
02:34<diego>I already have a system
02:34<diego>and I want to wipe the free space
02:34<diego>to make unrecoverable anything that was previously deleted
02:34<diego>including the swap drive
02:34<cahoot>aptitude show wipe
02:35<diego>I will install it directly to see

02:36<diego>nope... not what I want
02:36<diego>I dont want to delete a file
02:36<diego>I want to basically
02:36<diego>create a huge file
02:36<diego>consuming all the free space
02:36<diego>so to overwrite the entire free space on disk
02:37<diego>that is my basic idea
02:37<diego>supose you wanted to delete a file, and you did rm
02:37<diego>then you realize someone could recover that
02:37<diego>but you dont want to reinstall everythin

11:14<SynrG>with an SB Live! card, make sound from the input play back. i can't even do this simple thing, let alone use guitarix
11:14<SynrG>linux sound configuration makes me feel like a total idiot :(
11:15<SynrG>here's what i know works: plug the guitar into Line, start audacity, press record. pluck the strings. record sound. stop. play it back. this all works
11:16<SynrG>any idea what i'm missing when it comes to having the sound play through the speakers as i play the guitar?

13:07<dpkg>udev has the ability to statically rename Ethernet cards based on MAC address since version 0.090. The addresses are configured in /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net.rules (Squeeze, Lenny) or /etc/udev/rules.d/z25_persistent-net.rules (Etch). If you want the mappings to change, edit the respective file. To apply changes: "udevadm trigger" ("udevtrigger" on Etch) or reload the relevant driver module. See also <forcedeth mac>, <udev>.

21:41<CyL> Hi, I'm having a hard time setting wireless up on my debian system, it looks like network manager simply cannot connect to the access point, no matter what I do... this seem to happen to any AP I try to connect to, and other systems are able to connect to these same AP's, so it looks like the problem is localized to my system. Any advice please?

21:55<dpkg>HFS Plus / HFS+ (aka Mac OS Extended) is a filesystem used in modern Mac systems, replacing <HFS>. <MBR> partition ID: 0xAF. Supports smaller block sizes and UNIX-like features such as symlinks and device stubs. The Linux hfsplus filesystem driver can read/write HFS+ filesystems, tools are in the hfsprogs (mkfs.hfsplus) and hfsplus packages. <parted> can resize HFS+ (shrink only) provided the start of the partition stays fixed.

23:00<Tekk>does it work in any other browser?
23:00<jordanm>Tekk: because it doesn't actaully include flash. its just a script that downloads flash
23:00<Arrowmaster>Tekk: its in contrib because it downloads non-free software
23:00<Tekk>jordanm: that seems like a really minor technicality to me though, it's not explicitly the package, but its only function is that it INSTALLS said package, so it's fine?
23:00<Kal>i also tried installing the .rpm package from adobe with alien
23:01<kop>Tekk: That's the definition of what goes in contrib, stuff that's free but installs non-free stuff.
23:01<cybersphinx>Kal: Download the tar.gz, and put the .so file into ~/.mozilla/plugins?
23:01<Tekk>kop: I thought the definition was that it depends on nonfree
23:01<Kal>ok i will try
