01:19-!-kuhkatz [] has joined #debian
01:19<diego>th: yeah
01:19<diego>th: actually, I would like to compile some source from somewhere I dont really trust a lot
01:19<diego>so, I would like to run the ./configure script; make
01:20<diego>and be sure nothing will be written outside a directory
01:20<diego>something like a virtual machine but I dont have time to install a whole system now
01:20<akerl>What's the point of doing that? Won't you just be running it on your system anyway?
01:20<diego>well, I want to run it and be sure that it cannot change any file outside a directory
01:21<diego>that way
01:21<diego>when I kill the process
01:21<diego>it will be as it nothing has happened
01:21<th>if you really really realy need an isolated environment, run it on separate system (like on a vm)

01:21<diego>th: yeah, well, I was trying to avoid installing a whole new system ehehe
01:21<TSXE>th: three gold stars
01:21<diego>kinda lazy
01:22<akerl>... This seems like a recipe for fail. Either you trust is, and you don't need to isolate it like this, or you don't, and unless you audit every line of the code, you shouldn't be putting it anywhere near your system
01:22<th>chroot then
01:22<cthuluh>openbsd has systrace. something similar is probably available on gnu/linux based distros
01:22<diego>akerl: well, I dont need to compile as root
01:23<diego>so, I was thinking, if I create a user just for this
01:23<diego>wouldnt it be "safe" ?
01:23<cthuluh>that's what I do. but you have to take care of --prefix and all, if you want to install
01:23<th>in ideal world, yes, it is safe. since that program might use unknown security hole in your system, who knows what will happen
01:24<cthuluh>th's approach (chroot) may be simpler

10:08<dpkg>Ubuntu is based on Debian, but it is not Debian, and it is unlikely to live up to Debian's standards (see <Debian policy>). Only Debian is supported on #debian. Use #ubuntu ( instead. Even if the channel happens to be less helpful, support for distributions other than Debian is offtopic on #debian. See also <based on debian>.
10:08<ompaul>mock: you and most others ;-)
10:09<mock>dribble, if you have any debian specific questions, i might be able to better answer them. for instance, if you want to install debian on your pc then install virtualbox so you can run other OSes while still downloading things and stuff

16:33<towo`>JohnnyDoe, 2nd, does apt-cache policy your_secret_package show the older version?

16:35<towo`>but btw, if the older version is in an active repo, apt-get install package=version

16:36<towo`>JohnnyDoe, you can only provide a version, if apt-cache policy package shows you a package with this veryion

19:59<riley>any ideas?
20:00<jhutchins_lt>riley: With the knowledge you've gained about what CAN be done with computers you can learn how to take control of a Microsoft platform and make it do what you want it to do. Don't re-invent the wheel, but learn how it was meant to be done.
20:00<jhutchins_lt>I ran NT4 servers with multi-year uptimes.
20:01<riley>wtf does that mean?
20:01<petemc>i still run nt4 on my desktop in work
