01:12<Flimzy>cthuluh: How did you verify that icewease 4.0 is available to you? Did you just look at your existing apt list, or did you refresh it just now?
01:12<sney>that's his apt-cache policy output
01:12<cthuluh>apt-cache policy. but I am using apt-cacher-ng
01:12<cthuluh>if you look closely you have iceweasel 5 and 6 in this repo 8)
01:12<sney>sometimes has reachability issues, since it's an alioth project. they split the alioth stuff onto 2 machines but it's still not exactly optimal

01:14<sney>Flimzy: if you're in a hurry I can upload the deb somewhere. but yeah, it's probably a shuffle.
01:14<Flimzy>it's not a huge hurry, no. I actually have a 3-day old version in /var/cache/apt on my laptop... so if it's important, I can grab it from there.
01:14<sney>ah. same here
01:15<Flimzy>thanks for the offer, though :)
01:15<cthuluh>I'm curious about the fifth version, though. will test it later today. and about the sixth...

10:54<dpkg>methinks noresume is the boot parameter that you can add to your kernel boot command line so that the kernel doesn't try to resume back into your running session after <suspend>. 21:51<sney>so I have a server that sits on a lan and also hosts a vpn. I want it to resolve its fake domain name to itself to any client that asks, but to the correct (lan or vpn) ip depending on which the client is connecting from. Is this something I can do simply with dnsmasq/similar or am I going to need bind?

22:01<nyov>sney: you want to distinguish by requesting IP or incoming interface? anyhow I believe dnsmasq can do much, but it looks like it can't do this
22:02<sney>either or, yeah. I'd just distribute hosts files except a couple clients are sometimes on the lan, and sometimes on the vpn
22:02<sney>hmm, maybe 2 dnsmasq instances, one for each interface
22:04<nyov>that should work

23:22<cthuluh>highbombe: easy: deactivate the firewall, see if you can connect to samba, then add firewall protection until it doesn't work anymore
23:24<nyov>'deactivating' shorewall might make it put in deny rules, so nothing would work. ymmv

23:35<highbombe>loc ipv4

23:38<highbombe>i thought i would need multiple zones
23:38<highbombe>loc is for machines connecting locally
23:39<nyov>whats the interfaces for loc and net? in the interfaces file
23:39<highbombe>so for example samba is only allowed from the private ip 192.168.yadayada
23:39-!-ben [] has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
23:39<highbombe>and services under net can connect from any ip for the specific services
23:40<nyov>ah, so you *do* want multiple zones through one interface
23:41<highbombe>and for the most part this setup works fine, i have nginx, minecraft, openssh all working merrily, but nothing can connect to samba unless i modify the hosts file
23:41<nyov>you should have a firewall on your router, if you connect it directly to your whole lan
23:41-!-jeflui [] has joined #debian

23:42<highbombe>you mean iptables? shorewall is just a more convenient way to modify iptables
23:44<highbombe>or atleast thats my impression, at this point ill believe anything just to fix this
23:44<sney>shorewall is a more convenient way to manage iptables.
23:45<highbombe>my server doesn't really *need* to connect to dns, but id rather atleast understand what is happening
23:45<Wyzard_>highbombe: You're correct, pretty much all Linux firewall packages are really iptables rule generators
23:46<nyov>I just don't see the reason for this setup there
23:47<nyov>but if you want to use multiple zones on one interface, you'll have to use that host file
23:47-!-TSXE [] has joined #debian
23:47<highbombe>i just figured it was the most secure method, and most of the examples i have seen use multiple zones
23:48<nyov>it might make sense with vlan's on your switch
23:49<nyov>maybe I'm wrong, I don't exactly know your setup
23:50<highbombe>its basically just a debian server behind a router which connects to a modem
23:50<nyov>anyway, best way to debug it would be looking at the generated iptable rules
23:50<highbombe>but i suppose your right, i could use just net and not use loc
23:51<highbombe>if my router isnt forwarding samba ports i suppose no one from outside could connect anyway
23:51<highbombe>is that right?
23:52<nyov>well, you should block those netbios ports and whatnot anyway
23:54<highbombe>block them at the router or at the server?
23:54<highbombe>they need to be open at the server
