00:00-!-paggas [~paggas@cust-17-155.on6.ontelecoms.GR] has joined #debian
00:01-!-mode/#debian [+l 441] by debhelper
00:01<highbombe>i just tried removing my change to the hosts file, and using smb on net instead of loc, and it wont work again >:(
00:03-!-zegmonteiro [~zegmontei@] has left #debian []
00:03<highbombe>oh hold on i may have figured it out
00:07<nyov>apparently I was wrong, thought the router should rewrite the source IP on the package but I guess it doesn't
00:08<highbombe>what do you mean?
00:08-!-reklipz [] has joined #debian
00:08<highbombe>it does work if i use only a single zone by the way, now my only concern is if that is a security concern
00:08<nyov>highbombe: you can use some options in the interface file like nosmurfs, routefilter or sfilter to harden your rules some
00:09<nyov>depending on what you want to allow from the net or local only, you can write your rules with a netmask
00:10-!-dalebaldwin [] has quit [Quit: dalebaldwin]
00:10<highbombe>right now i am using dhcp,tcpflags,logmartians,nosmurfs
00:11-!-dalebaldwin [] has joined #debian
00:11-!-chitchat [~guest@] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
00:12<highbombe>thats a really good idea, ill try that right now
00:13<nyov>you can write something like "ACCEPT loc: fw ..." in the rules file
00:14<nyov>make that I think
00:14-!-drewdavis [] has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
00:15<nyov>not sure about the macros, not used them with IPv4 shorewall yet
00:17-!-will [] has joined #debian
00:17-!-mascarijunior [] has joined #debian
00:17-!-gomaaz [] has joined #debian
00:17<highbombe>hmm im looking at examples of this online and they still use two zones, and local and a internet
00:18-!-mascarijunior [] has left #debian []
00:18<highbombe>im gonna try net: and see if it works
00:18-!-will [] has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
00:20-!-marco_ [~marco@] has joined #debian
00:21-!-lanthan_ [] has joined #debian
00:21<nyov>highbombe: you can always go back to two zones, if you prefer, but rules will get more complicated and prone to failure
00:21<highbombe>its working
00:22<nyov>fwif, your problem might have been this manpage warning in shorewall-hosts, "If you have an entry for a zone and interface in shorewall-interfaces[2](5) then do not include any entries in this file"
00:22<nyov>s/fwif/fwiw/ :|
00:23<highbombe>i dont really have a way of testing it though, i just have to hope that only addresses within the network will work properly
00:23<highbombe>what file is it refering to?
00:24<nyov>man shorewall-hosts
00:25<highbombe>i wonder if i put back loc in the hosts folder, but kept it out of zones, would i be back in business?
00:25<highbombe>ill try it

00:27-!-lanthan [] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
00:27<highbombe>oh wait i read it wrong
00:27-!-marco_ [~marco@] has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
00:28<highbombe>its basically saying if you are using the interfaces file you dont need to use the hosts file
00:28<highbombe>i think i knew that, but for whatever reason when i used both samba would work, but dns wouldnt :S
00:28-!-hazard3 [] has quit [Quit: This computer has gone to sleep]
00:29<nyov>no, I think in this instance you want the other zone in -hosts, and not in interfaces
00:29<nyov>because both zones have the same interface
00:29-!-jespada [] has joined #debian
00:29-!-jbasalone [] has joined #debian
00:29<highbombe>i never had loc in interfaces though
00:29<highbombe>wait, maybe i did
00:30<highbombe>so if i add loc back to zones, keep it out of interfaces, and add it to hosts, maybe it will work with both zones?
00:30<highbombe>ill try it
00:31-!-jespada [] has quit []
00:32<highbombe>well it manages iptables correctly with those settings, but the server still loses access to dns
00:32<highbombe>it seems if i use the hosts file i cant access the dns
00:32<highbombe>but from ive read too it seems the hosts file should rarely be needed
00:33<highbombe>so i wonder how anyone is supposed to use multiple zones :S
00:33-!-sinf [] has joined #debian
00:33<nyov>one zone normally equals one physical interface on the machine
00:34-!-jbasalone [] has left #debian []
00:34<nyov>or at least some logical separation, like VLANs
00:35-!-mentor [~mentor@] has quit [Read error: Connection reset by peer]

00:36<nyov>so your use-case isn't really 'standard', but read the manpages, you'll figure it out

00:37-!-Judas_PhD [] has joined #debian
00:38-!-dalebaldwin [] has joined #debian
00:38<highbombe>hmm the manpages use multiple zones without much explanation
00:38<highbombe>im sure this is where is got confused :P
00:39<highbombe>but i suppose it does make sense, my server only has one ip, and from my understanding now zones are only meant to setup vpn's, which in that case would mean more interfaces
00:40<highbombe>but then i wonder if zones and interfaces were 1:1 ratio why have zones at all
00:41-!-sinf [] has quit [Quit: Leaving]
00:41<nyov>you can have multiple interfaces in the same zone
00:41-!-t0aster [] has joined #debian

00:43<highbombe>ahhhh that makes more sense
00:44<highbombe>so zones:interfaces is 1:* not *:1
00:44<highbombe>i didn't know that
00:46-!-reklipz [] has quit [Quit: Leaving.]
00:46<nyov>I have a router with three NICs, one is internet, one is DMZ, one is local network. but it also has a VPN tunnel to somewhere else, that shares the DMZ zone

00:51-!-allorder [] has joined #debian
00:52<nyov>highbombe: about what?
00:53-!-adrianoc [~adrianoc@] has joined #debian
00:53<highbombe>its a 3.0 GHZ pentium 4 with hyperthreading, 1.5 GB of memory, intel graphics (sadly the dedicated graphics died shortly after it was built), it is running the latest debian build, i am using nginx+php+mysql as the http server, postfix+courier as the mail server (though it isn't working fully yet), openssh (SFTP and telnet) I am using a key for my account, and I have some accounts I have setup
00:53<highbombe>for school which are chrooted and do not have keys (big security concern i suppose) and i also have minecraft daemon for kicks
00:54<highbombe>oh and ofcourse samba for my house, i live in a house of ten so and we use my old Xbox with XBMC to stream our stuff off the server over samba
00:56<highbombe>oh and i also have VNC setup but it can only be accessed locally, so i use it through tunneling
00:57<highbombe>i also am trying out nomachine's NX server with SSH keys, i hope disable VNC soon since NX seems to be much more secure
00:57-!-little [~little@] has joined #debian
00:58<nyov>sounds nice? heard about NX only a few times now, maybe time to investigate that one
00:58<little>could any tell what is jpeg encryption algorithm
00:58<little>or suggest some sites related to it
00:58<nyov>jpeg doesn't do encryption
00:59<TSXE>it does compression
00:59-!-kartmetal [] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
00:59*Quite always encrypts important text with jpeg
01:00<little>hmm ..after compressing a jpeg file v can encrypt it
01:00<highbombe>i would throw another network interface in it and use it also it as a router but with my roomates i am concerned about the responsibility of privacy, i know that it could be used to record internet traffic and i dont want to touch that with a 10 foot pole
01:00<little>right ?
01:00-!-gomaaz [] has quit [Quit: Verlassend]
01:02<highbombe>NX is really, really fast compared to VNC, plus it tunnels over your existing openssh client, plus can use keys, and after you connect it still needs your existing account password, so i consider it quite secure
01:02<nyov>little: sure you can encrypt your files
01:02<little>hmm sounds good
01:02<little>now let me know how 2 compress a jpeg file ?
01:02<little>or just suggest me few sites related to it
01:03<nyov>highbombe: you shouldn't put much stuff on a firewall, makes it easier to compromise, so it's not a bad thing to use a dedicated firewall/router for that

01:04<cesurasean>hey guys, if i've blown away extended, and swap partitions. is there a way to still recovery grub, and what not from the primary partition? ext3?
01:05<highbombe>VNC is secure from the outside, but if you have any other accounts on your server they will be able to tunnel VNC as well, and if they are malicious they can break your password (since VNC doesn't use your account password but instead an 8 character limited password) atleast from the vnc server that comes with debian, i have not tried the others
01:06-!-apolo [~apolo@] has quit []
01:06<nyov>cesurasean: depends on how you define 'blown away'
01:07<highbombe>then again to use VNC that account has to already be logged in, so i supose it isnt really that insecure unless someone is already logged in, and in that case they can also deny the connection if set up properly
01:07<nyov>if you took the disk out and used a torch on it or some explosives, i don't think so
01:08<nyov>highbombe: I don't use vnc, no clues

10:35<dpkg>experimental is the bleeding edge of Debian Development. Packages here have been deemed unfit/DANGEROUS/untrustworthy/etc for release by the maintainer responsible for them. DO NOT INSTALL PACKAGES FROM EXPERIMENTAL WITHOUT KNOWING EXACTLY WHY AND WHAT YOU ARE DOING. #debian does _not_ support experimental. For an actual description, see section of the Developer's Reference.

10:36<SynrG>JuanDosSantos1991: what is your real question? (i suspect something like 'where can i get a newer version of {foo} for lenny?')

12:38<onensora>I'm having trouble installing Debian from CD. During installation I get the message "/media/cdrom/:Please insert the disc labeled: 'Debian GNU/Linux 6.0.1a _Squeeze_ - Official i386 CD Binary-1 20110322-15:11' in the drive '/media/cdrom/' and press enter. Media change <Go Back> <Continue>". Needless to say the disc is inserted, pressing enter and go back do the same thing (nothing). When burning
