00:57<sney>!fakeraid
00:57<dpkg>Fakeraid is a term used for controller cards that advertise RAID functionality that is NOT supported by a hardware chip for parity. Most of these have only a BIOS. For use with Debian systems, it is suggested that you do not set a RAID in the BIOS and don't use dmraid, just use regular software RAID instead; ask me about <md>. http://wiki.debian.org/DebianInstaller/SataRaid

00:59<sawine>Ok thanks
00:59<sawine>I thought hardware would be more performant
00:59<sney>it would if it were a real hardware raid
00:59<sney>but those chips rely on windows drivers to do all the hard work

01:00<amitz>if a fifo blocks 2 echo statement trying to feed the fifo, and the fifo is read, one of the feeding will fail (terminates) in debian squeeze. is this a bug or it's an undefined specification of mkfifo? i'm deciding onwhether i should i file a bug on mkfifo.
01:02<amitz>one of the feeder will successfully feed the fifo, the other one will simply terminate.

03:58<streuner_>unxbm3r1: First, check for a backport on <debian-backports>. If unavailable: 1) Add a deb-src line for sid (not a deb line!); ask me about <deb-src sid> 2) enable debian-backports (see <bdo>) 3) aptitude update; aptitude install build-essential; aptitude build-dep packagename; apt-get -b source packagename; 4) install the resultant debs. To change compilation options, see <package recompile>; for versions newer than sid see <uupdate>.

09:46<themill>amitz: resolvconf is designed for dynamic setups moe than static setups.
09:47<amitz>so I must set my dhclient.conf to be non-clobbery then -_-
09:47<themill>fixing the dhcp server is the other approach
09:47<themill>!override dns
09:47<amitz>it's from ISP, not much can't be done -_-
09:47<themill>%override dns
09:47<dselect>To instruct dhclient to use your specified nameserver rather than the one given to you by your DHCP server, echo "supersede domain-name-servers a.b.c.d, e.f.g.h;" >> /etc/dhcp3/dhclient.conf (/etc/dhcp/dhclient.conf on squeeze), or see man 5 dhclient.conf for more information. Instead of supersede, you can also use "prepend" or "append" to add nameservers. Or remove domain-name-servers (etc.) from dhclient.conf if you prefer.
09:48<themill>dselect: fix dpkg

14:06<jhutchins_lt2>brunoramos: In order for what you want to do to work, the debian package manager and install scripts would have to know everything about how Ubuntu was configured, how various program versions related to other programs, which libraries had to be at which version for certain packages to work, etc.
