02:29<mcmat>Hi all - A little newbie question: i have built a custom 2.6.37 kernel with make-kpkg. It has produced linux-image-2.6.37.6+ and linux-headers-2.6.37.6+ packages. I have installed both. everything is fine but during an update, dkms complains "Error! Your kernel headers for kernel 2.6.37.6+ cannot be found. Please install the linux-headers-2.6.37.6+ package". Why can't dkms find the headers and what can i do to solve this?

03:06<deavid>when you have two OS sharing the same files, there's any way to make sure that a username (say, "deavid") is the same in the other OS? i mean, internally the users are numbers, not names. If i create files on a OS with user "deavid", in the other OS maybe i can't overwrite them because user "deavid" has another UID.

08:16<nocturnal>I keep wanting to test firewall rules when we open new ports by doing nc -l -p 9001 -o netcat.hex 172.16.16.16 but it always opens the ports and then closes the connection without sending anything through. even if I do echo 'hi' | nc on the client end. but if I start in.ftpd on port 9001 it works.
08:16<nocturnal>I'm used to using netcat for testing ports in freebsd, nc -kl for example, why can't I use it like this in linux?
08:16<nocturnal>it's very strange to me
08:16<nocturnal>and no inetd is not installed the first time, I installed inetd only to test if netcat was failing
08:16<nocturnal>and whenever I do install inetd and setup a simple ftp server on the port I want to test it works.

10:14<hargut>I recently got a NAS and have some folders which I want to mount automatically on boot. After making the right entries to the fstab everything works properly when the NAS is running. But if the NAS is offline, I have a huge boot delay telling me "Waiting for /nas/directy/to/mount" which takes around 60-90 seconds. Is there any option to avoid this boot delay or shorten it to a pre-set amount of time when the NAS is offline?

10:14<hargut>Because according to the log it tells first, that the mount failed as the address is not reachable, but afterward at some point the booting process waits for the directory to get ready.

13:13<nevyn>hymn_: you don't
13:13<wols_>!truecrypt
13:13<dpkg>TrueCrypt is a <non-free> (under DFSG's definitions) implementation of on-the-fly disk encryption that also attempts plausible deniability, something not found in other OTFE systems like <EncFS> and <LUKS>. Not in Debian, RFP in bug #413070. http://forums.truecrypt.org/ http://www.truecrypt.org/
13:13<crd>step 1: use LUKS instead
13:13<nevyn>dm-crypt ?

14:25<SynrG>valdyn: that is what i thought. i didn't think it would influence what session files were run. lxde, for example, does some custom session stuff but it ships with different session startup files that are sensitive to whether it's run in a KDE session or GNOME session or whatever
14:25<valdyn>jhutchins_lt: in which way?
14:25<splic>Hello, I'm trying to mount a folder that has a logical volume mounted to it to another location with the bind option for use with NFS, but I keep an error that the destination does not exist. What am I doing wrong?
14:25<SynrG>maybe the confusion is because of this? i mean, LXDE does run openbox, but it's definitely LXDE influencing the session, not the other way around with openbox exerting influence outward to the outer layer
14:26<valdyn>SynrG: all dm i know run ~/.xsession optionally or by default

17:30<Screwba>I just tried the -d option but it just hangs it, like you said in interactive mode
17:30<abrotman>cparker: well, your best bet is to find etch boot floppies (i think those were the last) and go from there
17:30<Screwba>I see the DHCPREQUEST, then the DHCPOFFER and finally the DHCPACK
17:30<cparker>abrotman: Thanks!
17:30<abrotman>cparker: do you want help finding those?
17:30<Screwba>I think what I am looking for is what is in the DHCPOFFER
17:30<Screwba>but not by using tcpdump
17:31<jemurray>Since I don't know the 'debug options' I would use tcpdump.
17:31<jemurray>I use tcpdump to debug these sorts of problems all the time.
17:31<jemurray>It will tell you every option you need.
17:32<cparker>abrotman: No, thanks. I found them: http://archive.debian.org/debian/dists/etch/main/installer-i386/current/images/floppy/
17:32<Screwba>I understand that but it is not a 'problem' I know what I want, I just would like to know how to save teh DHCPOFFER to a file for parsing later
17:32<cparker>Thanks again for your help.
17:33<jemurray>Screwba: I understand. I don't know off the top of my head.
17:33<Screwba>understand, thanks for the repsonse for the TCPDUMP though
17:33<retrospectacus>should be DISCOVER, OFFER, REQUEST then ACK iirc
17:34<abrotman>cparker: and remember you can't go straight from etch to squeeze

22:39<andre_pl>I've been trying to get my new squeeze box to pass a hostname to the dhcp server for a few hours now, I've tried editing /etc/dhcp3/dhclient.conf and adding 'send host-name "myhostname";' and also adding a hostname /etc/network/interfaces among other things, but nothing seems to work.

22:47<mshuler>andre_pl: what is managing the network connection, /etc/network/interfaces, networkmanager, wicd? (I use wicd, and it has it's own dhclient.conf file, that's why I ask)
22:48<mshuler>s/it's/its/ ...
22:50<mshuler>and I do believe that, if you are not using some network management widget (not really sure about NetworkManager), the file you should edit is /etc/dhcp/dhclient.conf (w/o the '3')
22:53<andre_pl>mshuler: I think you just nailed it. never noticed that directory. i created one in /etc/dhcp3 :P
22:53<andre_pl>thanks :)

23:42<arri>hoi all. i'm confused by a misterious blockage of all network traffic between eth0:0 on my server and my home network. connecting to the server on eth0 or eth0:[1-5] works fine.. also connecting to eth0:0 from any other network, other than my home network also works fine. after checking shorewall config, iptables, /etc/network.. where can the problem possibly be else ??
