Buzz(1.1; 1996-03-14), Rex(1.2; 1996-10-28), Bo(1.3; 1997-05-01), Hamm(2.0; 1998-07-24), Slink(2.1; 1999-03-09), Potato(2.2; 2000-08-15), Woody(3.0; 2002-07-19), Sarge(3.1; 2005-06-06), Etch(4.0; 2007-04-08), Lenny(5.0; 2009-02-14), Squeeze(6.0; 2011-02-06). 01:41<kop>nixjr: You have a year after release to upgrade. After that there's no more security support.
01:41<dpkg>Debian is a free (as in <dfsg>) and universal operating system, best known for its <apt> package management. It mainly consists of three distributions <stable> (currently <Squeeze>), <testing> (currently <Wheezy>) and <unstable> (<Sid>). Each is further divided in several repositories, at least <main>, <contrib> and <non-free>. See also <overview>, <fundamentals>, <backports>, <security>, <general cli tutorial> and <reference>.
01:41<dpkg>Debian stable does not always include all the software people need or want so there is much official, semi-official, and non-official software available for stable. See . Ask me about <security>, <installer firmware>, <backports>, <squeeze-updates>, <multimedia>, <non-free>, <contrib>, <emdebian>, <debian live>. See also <grounding>, <social contract>, <introduction>.

01:56<kop>nixjr: #debian-boot is for the install developers. I don't know if they want to answer that sort of question. Probably not because it's very likely answered in the install guide.

06:09<dpkg>Debian is a free (as in <dfsg>) and universal operating system, best known for its <apt> package management.
06:09<Bushmills>meaning that one?

06:10<gabrielegualco>the right channel is #linuxmint-debian
06:10<Black_Prince>nixjr, partialy true .. Debian has seperate repos for binary and free software ... main contrib and non-free ... I think they are explained in dfsg ...
06:11<Bushmills>thanks for telling us. i'm sure that now that we know, we'll all head over therer
06:11<nixjr>most of the stuff on those pages seems ot be about debians philosophy, i guess what im more interested in is the differences in the user experience, if any
06:11<Black_Prince>nixjr, another difference is that debian supports more architectures than ubuntu and release cycle is longer ... but software is more stable, thus more outdated.
06:12<Bushmills>one difference is possibly that #ubuntu is full with savvy and friendly people pleased to help noobs on their way, while #debian is known for bitching at noobs
06:12<Black_Prince>nixjr, but there are backports that add ability to install newer software into stable release sacrificing systems stability. See /msg dpkg backports /msg dpkg stable
06:13<Black_Prince>Bushmills, I think the opposite ...
06:13<Bushmills>just taking a guess
06:14<Black_Prince>nixjr, ah yes. Another difference that could be important ... In Debian sudo is not enabled and set up by default. We tend to use su or root login. However to setup sudo you need to install it (if not installed) and setup /etc/sudoers or add your user into sudo group.

06:17<Black_Prince>nixjr, another important thing can be that debian kernel is stripped off binary firmware. That can mean that some graphics, network and wireless cards could not work out of box.

08:34<XeonBloomfield>How to figure out what "/dev/" item has USB device?
08:34<XeonBloomfield>It's not a pendrive or remote HDD
08:34<XeonBloomfield>i've got it ID from lsusb

15:12<Vasistha>!doesn't work
15:12<dpkg>"Doesn't work" is a vague statement. Does it sit on the couch all day long? Does it procrastinate doing the dishes? Does it beg on the street for change? Please be specific! Define 'it' and what it isn't doing. Give us more details so we can help you without needing to ask basic questions like "what's the error message?". Ask me about <smart questions> and <errors>.
15:13<Nyadare>Basicly, I'm trying to connect to my BNC via irssi. When I set it up via the normal commands like /network add etc it enters the IRC server as a separate user. But if I simply /server and connect to it directly it automaticly joins all channels and the bouncer as it should

23:11<Gerowen>I have a general question, I'm reading this right now, but I have a general question.
23:12<sney>ask your general question
23:12<Gerowen>Let's say I have 12 computers, but due to bandwidth issues, I want to run my own repository that basically mirrors the official repos, is that a possibility?
23:12<Gerowen>That way I could update my repo and only download the packages from you guys once, and when the other clients pull the updates, they pull them from my local repo.
23:12-!-c0rp5e [~snolikom-@] has joined #debian
23:13<sney>it's the responsible thing to do anyway
23:13<rudepeople>anyone here running xfce with multiple displays? I cant seem to get it configured... and make it stick. I tried xrandr, grandr, and lxrandr... they help but when I reboot, I have to reset things up... it's kinda annoying...
23:15<Gerowen>I've never deployed Linux in a corporate environment, although I've been running it on my personal computers for years, and I'm educating myself, thanks sney, :-)
23:16<cybersphinx>Gerowen: Have a look at apt-cacher-ng, that doesn't build a full mirror, but you have to download each package once only.

23:17<cygnus>Here's the question though. A typical debian box has 500-1500 packages installed, while the repos have 30,000, so wouldn't maintaining a repo take more bandwidth than updating the individual boxes for anything less than about 30 boxes?
23:17<rudepeople>ok... new tac: catalyst, or radeon... which is preferred and why?
23:18<sney>radeon for general desktop use, catalyst for gaming (provided gpu support exists)
23:19<rudepeople>sney: THANKS! catalyst it is... ok, next question... anyone know how to start fglrx durring boot (as opposed to when x starts)?
23:20<sney>...start fglrx?
23:20<sney>it's not a program, it's a set of drivers
23:20<sney>the kernel module is loaded on boot and the X component starts with X
23:20<rudepeople>sney: fglrx: FireGL driver. AKA catalyst.
23:21<rudepeople>oops... didn't wait long enough... yeah. bat turn of phrase. I mean load. not start
23:21<Gerowen>cygnus: I think that's what apt-cacher does, I'm reading up on it now.
23:21<Gerowen>cygnus: Looks like it "caches" packages that you download, but doesn't require you to mirror an entire repository.
23:21-!-ifvoid [] has quit [Read error: Connection reset by peer]
23:22<rudepeople>actually... maybe I just don't know enough about *nix boot... my problem is asthetics... with radeon, things look fine. font is acceptable... with catalyst, fonts are friggen HUGE... after x loads, then it's all fine... but for the 15 seconds I wait for boot to finish, my eyes bleed.
23:23<sney>rudepeople: oh, that's the lack of kms support.
23:23<sney>the proprietary drivers (fglrx and nvidia both) don't support setting the console resolution automatically on boot the way the free drivers do
23:23<sney>so you have to use a vga or gfxpayload statement in your grub configuration
23:25<rudepeople>sney: "gfxpayload"... learning about that now... thanks for the info!
