01:30<Planet8>I'm getting false authentication failures in logwatch in the pam_unix section with dovecot.

01:31<Planet8>authentication failure; logname= uid=0 euid=0 tty=dovecot : 11 Time(s)
01:31<Planet8>I know the user is legitimate and haven't had any authentication failures and I know the IP.
01:31<Planet8>Is this perhaps a bug in dovecot or logwatch or something?
01:32<Planet8>It's registering valid authentication as failures.

01:43<Bushmills>that's in auth.log, it seems
01:44<Planet8>I guess I must have overlooked it when I installed dovecot.
01:44<Bushmills>seems more a problem with pam or pam config than with dovecot
01:45<Planet8>it's in the dovecot.conf PAM section

01:47<Planet8>Apparently one has to comment out the "passdb pam" part in dovecot.conf that deals with system users. Otherwise Dovecot will also look for system users when someone fetches emails which leads to warnings in the log file.
01:48<Bushmills>body of passdb pam *is* commented out completely by default

In particular when I install kernel metapackage and udev as suggested by release notes, and (irc) dpkg and my memory it says the are at the latest. When dpkg -l suggests I have the lenny ones... 17:14<dpkg>Is apt trying to remove packages that it thinks were automatically installed? This happens when you "aptitude install gnome" and then later remove bits of it causing the gnome meta-package to be uninstalled and then all its dependencies. Fix this by running "aptitude unmarkauto packagename" on strategically chosen packages, or reinstall the <metapackage> (apt-get also has unmarkauto from squeeze onwards).
17:14<Vasistha>Bushmills: thanks for the recommendation, I'll check it out! The good news is I just discovered that the lost directory was moved to an obscure location, not actually deleted, yay :-)

23:53<jardiamj>Ok, I did some RTFM about update-rc.d and it says: The equivalent dependency header would have start and stop dependencies on $remote_fs and $syslog, and start in runlevels 2-5 and stop in runlevels 0, 1 and 6.

23:56<jardiamj>overo, if I understand well if I do update-rc.d mything defaults. mything should run with start at startup and with stop at shutdow.
23:57<jardiamj>I still don't understand well those runlevels thing..
