01:06<tensorpudding>is there any way i can suppress them?
01:12<peterS>tensorpudding: that's in dmesg? why is the kernel doing DNS? that's just weird.
01:12<tensorpudding>sorry, that's not in dmesg
01:12<peterS>do you mean /var/log/daemon.log? that is where I'd expect to find this sort of thing
01:12<tensorpudding>it's my logs
01:13<tensorpudding>i'll have to check which one
01:13<peterS>probably /var/log/syslog and /var/log/daemon.log
01:13<tensorpudding>i just switched from freebsd to debian
01:13<tensorpudding>i got this messages on freebsd too
01:13<tensorpudding>but apparently i'm still getting them
01:13<tensorpudding>originally they were from sendmail (on freebsd)

01:16<tensorpudding>debian, apparently

01:17<Hydroxide>peterS: I still use bsd-mailx for a very simple use case - when I'm on a system that has local mail delivery from automated processes but isn't where I actually deal with "normal" email :)
01:18<peterS>Hydroxide: see when I get into that situation I do one of 3 things. (a) put up with mailx, if I really really really think it will be a simple thing to deal with. (2) install mutt. (3) rsync the mbox somewhere I can read it
01:18<tensorpudding>actually i'm not sure if this is the same mail program
01:18<tensorpudding>but i need to be able to read local mail
01:19<tensorpudding>but i really don't need anything fancy
01:19<Hydroxide>peterS: I'm also one of several sysadmins on a shared server where another sysadmin (whose day job is at apple, but this is a spare-time thing for him) uses heirloom-mailx, and used to use nail
01:20<Hydroxide>peterS: well currently I've set up the personal system I was referring to - i.e. my laptop - to forward my mail via outgoing TLS-encrypted authenticated SMTP over the submission port via my account on that shared server, so now it appears in my normal inbox :)
01:20<tensorpudding>okay
01:20<tensorpudding>looking over old mails
01:20<tensorpudding>it does seem to be in dmesg
01:21<tensorpudding>or interspersed with it
01:21<tensorpudding>it's hard to tell

01:24<peterS>one way is probably to install a local bind9 instance (and use 127.0.0.1 in /etc/resolv.conf) - you can control bind's log spam at a reasonably granular level

01:25<peterS>of course there's also the question of why exim4 wanted to do AAAA lookups at all. unless you've got a public IPv6 address, it shouldn't need those.
01:26<tensorpudding>i don't know about that one
01:26<tensorpudding>sendmail wanted to do it too
01:26<peterS>do you have a public IPv6 address, then? public meaning, does not start with fe80::
01:26<tensorpudding>what would local bind do?
01:27<tensorpudding>it'd just cache for that one machine?
01:27<peterS>bind9 is a name server. yeah, unless you wanted to set it up to also server for other machines on your local net
01:28<tensorpudding>i don't know how to do that
01:28<tensorpudding>my router already acts as a name server
01:28<tensorpudding>wouldn't they conflict?
01:29<peterS>they wouldn't conflict. however, setting up a bind instance might involve some trickery to make your DHCP client _not_ overwrite your /etc/resolv.conf file

01:30-!-jyre [~mock@173-21-16-214.client.mchsi.com] has quit [Quit: Leaving]
01:30<peterS>the router probably sends back a nameserver IP which your dhcp client normally puts in /etc/resolv.conf. getting the dhcp client to _not_ do that is ... I don't actually know how. there are multiple dhcp clients in debian and they don't all work the same in these regards
01:30<tensorpudding>the router isn't really easily configurable
01:31<tensorpudding>it's a residential dsl thing
01:31<peterS>right, no need to reconfigure that, you would just need your dhcp client (on the linux box) to ignore the nameserver IP it gets from the router
01:31<peterS>anyway, using a local bind instance instead of the router's nameserver does feel a bit like a sledgehammer, if the only purpose is to avoid a bit of log spam
01:32<tensorpudding>well, i actually tried doing this once
01:32<tensorpudding>i ran into the issue of hostnames
01:32<peterS>I only suggested it because I know it's possible to control what bind does and doesn't complain about in the logs, whereas I don't know the equivalent for regular libc nss lookups like you're using now
01:32<tensorpudding>i couldn't figure out how to get it to do hostnames correctly
01:36<jm_>!override dns
01:36<dpkg>To instruct dhclient to use your specified nameserver rather than the one given to you by your DHCP server, echo "supersede domain-name-servers a.b.c.d, e.f.g.h;" >> /etc/dhcp3/dhclient.conf (/etc/dhcp/dhclient.conf on squeeze), or see man 5 dhclient.conf for more information. Instead of supersede, you can also use "prepend" or "append" to add nameservers. Or remove domain-name-servers (etc.) from dhclient.conf if you prefer.
01:37<jm_>perhaps this will help

06:15<Slydder>hey all. I have an NFS share mounted and need to sync it with a local directory automatically. I would like to forgo a cron solution because of the rsync overhead. better would be something like lsyncd that actually works with nfs mounts. any ideas?

11:58<tchmnkyz_>Greetings, i am having an issue where snmpd seems to be reporting the wrong numbers for trafic on a network interface. my checks through google found some issues but none like mine. The switch is reporting completely different readings then what snmpd on the server is. So i figured i would jump on here and see if anyone else has had an issue with this. System is Latest Squeeze (just installed it last week.) Kernel: 2.6.32-5-amd64, snmpd ver: 5.4.3~dfsg-2.

12:15<r4co0n>Hi. I just thought again it is bandwidth-wasting to download updates for two squeeze boxes twice. I would like my netbook to use the same space for saving and loading packages as my desktop, I think that would be the best approach here. How would I achieve that, I would want some fallback mechanism too... Don't know if that is too much to ask.
12:16<r4co0n>Something like, your archives reside on network, if they dont, use internet and hdd

18:39<seeS>ok, fglrx only works with xorg 1.10, but 1.11 is current

18:40<seeS>so you have to hunt down all the xorg thingies, all the things that depend on 1.11 etc and get it back to 1.10
18:40<seeS>for me it was trawling through archive etc as it already been updated.

18:46<seeS>yes, it is broken
18:46<themill>jla: the locales thing is easy to fix at any time but also unimportant -- "dpkg-reconfigure locales" and select the ones you are using. Do you have the debconf package installed now? what version? (apt-cache policy debconf)

18:50<psYchotic>but I guess that's a byproduct of it trying to upgrade xorg-server-cre

21:27<dpkg>ath5k is a completely free (no proprietary HAL) driver for Atheros 802.11a/bg PCI wireless LAN chipsets. Included in Debian kernels since 2.6.24. It does not require firmware from userspace. See http://wiki.debian.org/ath5k for more information and supported devices. For 802.11n PCI/PCIe device support, ask me about <ath9k>.
21:27<babilen>+ http://wiki.debian.org/WiFi/HowToUse should get you started. Good night all :)
