00:22<grepper>Hi all. Its been a while since I updated my kernel (2.6.32 on debian sid). What kernel is it suggested to use atm ?
00:23<boba>I believe squeeze has 2.6.32 last time I checked?

00:24<grepper>hm, I was hoping to upgrade from there, thinking maybe it would address an issue I'm having, though it may not be related to kernel at all

02:53<gdb>riley: Generally nothing. However, it won't route properly to machines that are on the network that's outside the scope of the intended netmask. Meaning, it will not route packets to the default gateway for addresses that it expects to be on the local network (everything in the scope of the "too big" netmask).
02:54<gdb>riley: if this is a home network, you won't notice any difference (likely). If it's a work network and you need to talk to machines on subnets closer to yours that are in the scope of the bad mask, then they will be inaccessible.
02:54<riley__>it's a corporate network
02:54<riley__>i think i can get away with /23
02:55<gdb>(It's also easy to change to the correct value without rebooting).

05:25<sml>I have a question about the 2.6.39_3.0.0-3 linux image (or whatever its' called!). I grabbed the source, via apt-get source, but when I try and use build-dep it complains that gcc 4.5 is needed and can't be found. Is it possible to build kernel 3.0 without jumping through any hoops on Squeeze? I already have backports in my sources so gcc 4.5 can't be in there.

05:37<babilen>jm_: The package declares "Build-Depends: ... gcc-4.4 [alpha hppa m68k], gcc-4.5 [amd64 armel armhf i386 ia64 mips mipsel powerpc ppc64 s390 s390x sh4 sparc sparc64] ...

05:38<jm_>sml: right, kernel itself needs gcc 3.2 or somesuch
05:39<jm_>obviously it may be different for all the architectures debian supports
05:39<babilen>sml: I am not sure if just changing the build-depends to gcc-4.4 would do you any good. There might be a good reason for this, but it might also just be the case that both are possible, but that gcc-4.5 provides desirable features over gcc-4.4 on those architectures.
05:39<sml>I'm on amd64. But is there a solution or do I need to pull in gcc from testing?
05:40<babilen>sml: I am, furthermore, not sure how well the udev version in squeeze plays with the 3.* kernel(s), you'll definitely need a new version of linux-base
05:40<sml>babilen: is there a good way to proceed from here or am I just simply better of waiting for a bpo kernel ?
05:40<babilen>sml: Do you need 3.* ?

08:24<sml>I think I'll just wait. It's just I've got a bit of hardware that's flaky (up and down like a yoyo) and it's native in kernel 3
08:25<sml>so was hoping that the kernel code would be a bit better than the manufacturer's driver
08:25<babilen>sml: It is and it is not recommended to mix stable with anything *but* backports. The kernel is different and you should make sure that you only pull it and its dependencies from sid.
08:26<sml>If I upgrade linux-base and the firmware packages etc is it hard to DOWNGRADE them again if something goes wrong?
08:26<babilen>sml: It is up to you in the end -- Just wanted to share my thoughts. Btw, backporting the kernel to squeeze is a bit harder than expected if you do not backport gcc-4.5 as well.
08:26<sml>babilen: I figured that last night when apt said the dep was on gcc-4.5
08:26<babilen>sml: I haven't done that, so I can and will not make any assumptions.
08:27<sml>well black_prince said he'd compiled it fine with gcc-4.4 but you know.. i can live with the flakyness of my wireless driver for now
08:27<babilen>sml: It is possible, but you also need to edit debian/config/defines in addition to debian/control in the source package. All in all it looks as if pulling the kernel directly from sid is the easiest approach.

19:02<project2501a>hey guys, i run a small cluster which has mixed lenny and squeeze. i have noticed an interesting behavior in /usr/bin/update-alternatives , which i would like to talk about. in lenny, update-alternatives actually goes ahead and makes the link from the alternative name to the generic name
19:02-!-Amorphous [] has joined #debian
19:03<project2501a>in squeeze, update-alternatives makes a temp link, suffixed by .dpkg-temp, then checks if it can make the link from the alternative to the generic name

19:04<project2501a>which makes sense: why make the link to the real name, if linking the alternative name fails
19:04<project2501a>if it fails, shouldn't it clean up, after itself?
19:04<project2501a>it leaves .dpkg-temp in /etc/alternatives

23:33<ridin>new to linux here, how do i get my netgear wna1100 wireless card working? looking around it uses ath9k_htc
23:34<sney>if it's an ath9k card, it should work already
23:34<sney>how new is it?
23:35<ridin>maybe just a few months
23:35<sney>I meant how recently did the card come out, but nvm
23:36<ridin>doesn't seem to work
23:36<sney>can you open a terminal and type 'lspci -nn |grep -i net'

23:37<sney>ah, it seems you need a newer kernel as well as a firmware package
23:37<ridin>do i have to upgrade to testing
23:37<ridin>or just the kerenl
23:37<sney>!bdo kernel
23:37<dpkg>Newer kernels for Debian stable releases are distributed via Ask me about <bdo> to add to your sources.list correctly, then run "aptitude update". To list available backported kernel image packages: aptitude search '?narrow(~nlinux-image,?origin(Debian Backports))'. To install a package (e.g.): aptitude -t squeeze-backports install linux-image-2.6.39-bpo.2-686-pae See also <bdo kernel lenny>.
23:37<ridin>kernel auhe
23:38<ridin>woah what
23:38<sney>there's a lot of shorthand in there to make it fit. go to and follow the directions there to add the source to your system, then come back and go through it step by step
23:38<sney>and if you get stuck, just ask
23:39<ridin>ok thanks

23:45<ridin>ok it's going
23:45<ridin>also i dual boot with 7, but grub shows it as vista, can i change that?
23:46-!-mdupont [] has joined #debian
23:48<sney>yep, you can manually change it in /boot/grub/grub.cfg, though it'll overwrite back to vista any time you update grub. I don't remember how to do it permanently, it's been a long time since I did any digging with a dual-boot system
23:49<ridin>first quarrel with linux and i'm already liking it
23:49<ridin>thanks for the help, will reboot and see if my card works
23:50<ridin>ok im here
23:50<sney>you also need to install the firmware-atheros package from non-free
23:50<ridin>yes i have that already
23:50<sney>reboot away
