02:54<xio3>i accidently powered off my system wrong. when it came back up it said i didn't have enough disk space (not true). so then i did a touch /forcefsck to make fsck run on reboot. that ran and after it rebooted i can't login. i get the login screen but when i enter a password and user name all i get is a flicker and i'm right back where i started. i tried creating a new user account and logging in with that from the terminal (i can login from
02:54<xio3>the terminal) and that didn't work either. suggestions?

06:44<Bushmills>hoboJean: linux isn't sensitive to light. a device which works with light usually works in darkness too
06:44<Black_Prince>hiroshima, deb-src one ... (note: testing and sid have problems with fglrx)

06:46<Bushmills>apart from the driver and debian related aspects - some webcams tend to lose sync, or show compression flaws when ambient light drops below a certain level. i experienced that with a logitech webcam

08:12<ompaul>Flurry: I add in certain files and the like via that script - it also reminds which ever admin is doing the job to alter the criteria based on dept etc

08:17<Flurry>in my case the users are created by a script in a CMS (Drupal) that generates them after registration
08:18<Flurry>they are only in an ldap server... not in the /etc/passwd file
08:19<Flurry>will I be able to set the quota from the same script? I mean, probably the script is running as www-data... not as root... will give it a try

17:50<johanmlg>hi! i need some help with installing debian on my laptop. during install it says that it needs some non-free firmware files and it says that the name of the file it needs is cis/SW_8xx_SER.cis. Ive googled a bit and found that that file is contained in the package firmware-linux-free and that you can find that package here: http://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/unofficial/non-free/firmware/squeeze/current/ Ive downloaded that file, extracted
17:50<johanmlg> it and then extracted the package inside it and put on a ext3 volume on the same usb stick im trying to install from. but when i insert it back into my laptop and press yes to load the missing firmware file nothing happens and the message box just pops back up. what am i doing wrong?
17:51<crd__>Yeah, just put the package on the root of the USB drive.

19:58<gdb>FragByte: Interesting. I touched a file 'test' then set it to 600. I gzipped it and the test.gz file is also 600. My umask is 022 and normally sets a new file to 644.
19:59<gdb>FragByte: bzip2 and gzip leave me with a mode 600 file, zip and tar (that work with multiple files) leave me with a 644 archive file.
19:59<FragByte>gdb i did exactly that with swapped permissions (file was 644) and i always got a 600 archive ... was on wheezy though
20:00<gdb>I think this is saying that since gzip and bzip2 work on individual files, they have "something to go by" when setting permissions (the input file). While zip and tar (which work on multiple files) have nothing to go by outside of your session umask. Which does, in retrospect, make perfect sense.

20:04<Zomb>why?
20:04<Zomb>copying original permissions is perfectly fine
20:05<gdb>Zomb: What we're discussing is that tar and zip don't do that.
20:05<FragByte>you compressed 'in place'
20:05<gdb>FragByte: Yes
20:05<Zomb>gdb: tar attempts to restore the permissions, too
20:05<Zomb>or what do you mean? giving new files the permissions of the tarball?
20:05<FragByte>that changes everything, compressing in place does not change the permissions of course
20:06<gdb>Zomb: tar and zip obey session umask which means if you have 600 super_sekrit_file and zip it, you end up with 644 super_sekrit_file.zip -- which someone can come along and gank and unzip and get your super_sekrit_file content

20:11<gdb>http://pastebin.com/fpLGz4yJ
20:11<gdb>you're exposing information
20:12<Zomb>yes, and? You create a NEW archive.
20:12<gdb>the original file is protected to the user only, the archive is world readable -- this is a problem. If tar were to examine the files going into the archive, and preserve the *most restrictive* permission, it can then set the mode of the tar file to that. This protects the data going into the archive.
20:12<Zomb>if you set your default umask to less strict mode then you deliberately want to set this permissions to all new files
20:12<gdb>I'm really not clear on how this is a difficult concept to understand.

22:10<wompa>dpkg, ubuntu
22:10<dpkg>Ubuntu is based on Debian, but it is not Debian. Only Debian is supported on #debian. Use #ubuntu (irc.freenode.net) instead. Even if the channel happens to be less helpful, support for distributions other than Debian is offtopic on #debian. See also <based on debian>.
