But I falsely clicked `accept it', then after a while my network seems become unstable (browsing website sometime unreachable). How can i know/ detect if something not right?

01:03-!-karth [~hanu@] has joined #debian
01:03<dardevelin>hi everyone... Someone today told that its a god idea to use the debian sources list generator
01:03<dardevelin>so i wonder whats the recommend ? i want to upgrade from squeez for wheezy . so if someone can share i would appreciate that. Thanks in advance
01:03-!-ghosTM55 [] has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
01:04<chl501>thank you.
01:04<jm_>dpkg stable->testing
01:04<dpkg>First, understand that testing is a pre-release distribution without timely security support and that you will have a bumpy ride; ask me about <moving target> <testing> <testing security>. From /etc/apt/sources.list, remove stable-specific lines like squeeze-updates and backports, and change squeeze to wheezy. apt-get update && apt-get dist-upgrade. If you feel you need more instructions, perhaps you should wait a while.
01:04<ml|>dardevelin: have much debian experience? if not stay with stable
01:06-!-ghosTM55 [] has joined #debian
01:06<dardevelin>ml|, Quite enough i would say. I have been with lmde, for about a year but now i want to move to the daddy :D
01:06<dardevelin>i mean i went deep on the system already, i had breakages. compiled the kernel once.
01:07<dardevelin>following a tutorial but did it. Have more less a perception of the folder structure and environment i would say. Also can handle drivers and apt-get apt-cache, debsums
01:08-!-legnaleurc [] has joined #debian
01:08<ml|>your choice, good luck; and instal apt-listchanges and apt-listbugs
01:08<dardevelin>ml|, thanks :D
01:09-!-Myon_ [] has joined #debian
01:09<dardevelin>btw wheezy and testing are the same ? cause i've seen in the pass testing on the sources list
01:09<dardevelin>on lmde
01:10<jm_>they are the same now
01:10<dardevelin>ok nice then :D
01:11<dardevelin>just i tough like it would be something around this
01:11<dardevelin>if selected wheezy once that one become stable
01:11<dardevelin>it would be pretty much pointing to stable system

03:22<JOVE>I am trying to make a deb file from some source code but before I can do that I need to create a nice Makefile (at least as far as I know). My current Makefile looks like but when I write make the file also tries to install the program after compellation. I tough that it was the job of "make install"
03:22<JOVE>so the question is. What have I done wrong

03:30<jm_>EmleyMoor: cpufrequtils has an init script which is configured via /etc/default/cpufrequtils, so the answer is yes
03:31<JOVE>so I should put install: in front of it?

07:04<sjunaz>Is this possible?

07:05<EmleyMoor>The person I want to communicate with has only Yahoo, AIM and Skype (yuck!)
07:06<sjunaz>Basically so that when user x logs in on the FTP, he can download files from several directories, and upload to a certain directory not in his home dir.
07:07<babilen>sjunaz: We typically frown upon FTP as there are better alternatives. (sftp, scp, ..) -- If you want to provide a restricted environment you might want to look into scponly. /me hasn't used FTP in *ages* so I am not sure if what you want to achieve is possible. There is, however, a #proftp channel on
07:07<sjunaz>yes sorry I use sftp actually =)
07:08<sjunaz>SFTP over SSH =)
07:08<sjunaz>so I would like a home dir with shortcuts to the directories the user accesses frequently
07:08<sjunaz>is that possible?
07:08<sjunaz>I have no idea if there is a technical term
07:09<sjunaz>I'm quite new to Debian (or linux as a whole)
07:09<babilen>I am still not sure if what you are after is possible without actually changing anything in the underlying filesystem. But that does by no means imply that this is indeed not possible.
07:09<babilen>A symlink is what comes to mind, but that would be "implemented" by changing the underlying filesystem that is served, not just virtually by the daemon.
07:10-!-and1bm [] has quit [Quit: Konversation terminated!]
07:10<babilen>In short: you would just create a symbolic link (man ln) from src → dst

07:11<babilen>I'd still recommend to look into scponly btw

07:11<sjunaz>will it help me achieve the same thing?=)
07:11<sjunaz>I only have two users here, and I trust them both
07:13<babilen>Ok, in that case it is not really necessary. It essentially allows you to restrict access to filesystem/commands which is a good idea if you are dealing with users you don't necessarily trust.
07:14<sjunaz>so symlink is my best bet here?
07:16<sjunaz>Ideally what I want is two user accounts. they can log in to their shell via ssh, and connect to the sftp server, with the same logins as for the shell.
07:17<babilen>It give you exactly this shortcut somewher else
07:17<sjunaz>they each have their home directories for personal stuff, but can also access stuff in shared directories (ftp)
07:18<sjunaz>and also upload stuff to the directories where apache reads from. the server hosts two sites.

14:41<eyeofthetiger>amphi: Thanks. bim_ir: I'm having an issue with my video card. The screen blanks every time I boot it up; I see several messages about drm and nouveau right before it does. I do not have X installed.
14:41<bim_ir>I like Debian for portability, no other distro can say that it is so portable as Debian
14:42<bim_ir>eyeofthetiger: try to add "video=ofonly" to kernel options in yaboot line
14:42<amphi>eyeofthetiger: I wonder if that's to do with kernel mode switching - perhaps try disabling kms on the kernel commmand line

14:42<eyeofthetiger>The reason I don't have X installed is that I thought that that might be the problem so I did a clean install without it.

20:13<luser>mysql quickie - I have a tar of the whole /var/lib/sql directory from an old machine, how should I restore those databases onto a new machine (mysql's already installed)?
20:15<luser>can I create dummy databases with the right names in mysql, and copy the old files on top?
20:16<luser>I don't have a dumpfile (the backups were from a non-booting machine, I counldn't do anything apart from pull files off it from rescue mode)
20:17<kop>luser: The safe approach is to run an old mysql daemon and do a dump.
20:18<luser>kop - I only have the tarball, but I'm running the same version of debian on the new machine
20:20<luser>I presume I can't just untar the whole thing, as I don't want to change stuff in /var/lib/mysql/mysql

20:20<kop>luser: I don't know what needs to go where but if you put everything back like it was then it might run. (Or not. Depends on whether the db was being updated when the disk stopped/when the tarball was taken. On-disk database strutures are notorious for being inconsistent when backed up at the filesystem level. That's why there's db dump commands.)
20:22<luser>I guess I can stop mysql, and make a back-up of my current empty-ish tree first, and then try to untar everything afresh.
20:22<luser>I'm worried about the stuff that's installation-specific though.
20:22<kop>luser: Presumably if it's broken the there's tools that will fix it and then you can dump/restore.
