01:07<dpkg>First, check for a backport on <debian-backports>. If unavailable: 1) Add a deb-src line for sid (not a deb line!); ask me about <deb-src sid> 2) enable debian-backports (see <bdo>) 3) aptitude update; aptitude install build-essential; aptitude build-dep packagename; apt-get -b source packagename; 4) install the resultant debs. To change compilation options, see <package recompile>; for versions newer than sid see <uupdate>.

02:05<Gerowen>Let's say I have an FTP server, (ProFTPD) and I want to implement a quota on one of the users so the folder they see when they log in cannot exceed a certain size. What's the best approach?

02:05<sney>!quota
02:05<dpkg>[quota] a Debian package for managing disk space quotas. It can be made to cap space usage by certain uids or gids; see /usr/share/doc/HOWTO/en-txt/Quota.gz (in the "doc-linux-nonfree-text" package) for a (slightly out-of-date) introduction.

02:06<Gerowen>How many of those bang commands work on dpkg?
02:06<Gerowen>!irc
02:06<dpkg>IRC is Internet Relay Chat, the means to provide #debian to its patrons. Official Debian IRC channels: http://wiki.debian.org/IRC . Please read http://wiki.debian.org/GettingHelpOnIrc . Ask me about <irc tutorial> and <faq>. See also <debstats> and <irclog>.
02:06<Gerowen>!dpkg
02:06<dpkg>extra, extra, read all about it, dpkg is the program used by Debian to install and remove packages, "man dpkg". Also ask me about <reference>. The main info bot in #debian is also called dpkg; ask me about <dpkgbot>.
02:06<sney>most of them. but you should really do /msg dpkg keyword

10:11<dbian>my other systems are not showing these functions... I actually have been using debian for many years and have never seen this stuff since this morning
10:12<dbian>what package might have triggers this... I dont really like the idea that I am running my commands thru some sort of wrapper
10:12<babilen>dbian: _aspell is defined in /etc/bash_completion.d/aspell and gives you bash-completion for aspell. You typically have a bunch of those for different programs. (git, svn, gcc, ...)

14:51<dpkg>aptitude has more advanced conflict/dependency resolution and will often find a solution where apt-get gives up. It can be used from the command line like apt-get plus an interactive resolver makes it much easier to recover from broken dependencies. It has advanced search capabilities (see <aptitude search>). For some upgrades, apt-get is preferred (e.g. lenny->squeeze). Read the release notes and http://tinyurl.com/3g4d4d9.

19:28<retrospectacus>you're making a debian package?
19:28<f0rk>yes
19:29<babilen>rijads: Or http://debiansystem.info/ -- but just start with <general cli tutorial> and <reference>
19:29<rijads>ok i ll check that too
19:29<retrospectacus>I don't know... just take a look at some in other packages I suppose
19:29<rijads>any good tutorials, to help me start using terminal ?

19:31<babilen>rijads: Bed time reading: http://www.cryptonomicon.com/beginning.html
19:32<rijads>ok, saved all the webs and advices in notepad, i am sure, they ll help me a lot
19:32<babilen>IMHO the linuxcommand site is a nice gentle introduction -- But there are just sooo many tutorials around that it is hard to pick one.
19:34<babilen>rijads: The "In the Beginning was the Command Line" link is not a tutorial, but rather a nice essay written by Neal Stephenson (but I stop talking off-topic not - enjoy your journey into the Debianland)

19:35<dpkg>The Debian Reference will answer most of your questions about Debian. The latest version (v2) is at http://www.debian.org/doc/manuals/debian-reference/ . You can install this too, the package name is debian-reference: 'aptitude install debian-reference'

19:44<rijads>Uhmm i have read this about instalation, and partitioning, but what is your opinion, about dual booting, 2 systems on one hdd, or is it risky, should i get other hdd for debian ?
19:44<sney->if you can get another hdd easily you might as well
19:45<sney->but there's nothing inherently dangerous about 2 OSes sharing a single disk, though resizing a ntfs partition can be a little hairy
19:45<rijads>well hdds are not that expensive nowadays and i don't need 1tb for it, so maybe its better to get another one
19:46<rijads>before i risk loosing all my data from this hdd
19:46<rijads>yeh exectly, thats what i am scared about, resizing ntfs partition for debian
19:46<babilen>How large is your disk? You certainly don't need to buy another disk, but if you don't mind to do so it won't hurt.
19:46<babilen>!tell rijads -about dual boot guide
19:47<babilen>rijads: The partitions can be resized -- Always good to have backups though ;)
19:47<rijads>its 1tb 2 partitions first 100gb and other 900, on first 20 gb left, on second 40 gb left, i could clean up to get more space

21:41<Gerowen>For those that saw my questions earlier, I figured out the best solution to allowing a user to change their password remotely while limiting their access to the server. lshell is a python-based shell interface with a simple config file that allows you to limit visible folders and commands that can be executed. I just added him to the SSH users list, and set his default shell as lshell.
