00:49<justindv>aloha folks, i'd love a little help. I installed chrome from google, rather than chromium, and can't seem to find it. I'd like to place a launcher on the top bar
00:51<mattcen>justindv: Do Google provide a .deb, or was it a tarball?
00:51<justindv>i installed it with gdebi
00:51<mattcen>What was it called?
00:52<mattcen>Try 'dpkg -L google-chrome-stable | grep bin'
00:53<mattcen>I'd like to think it'd create a launcher for you in /usr/share/applications though...
00:53-!-Tod4Dd [] has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
00:54<justindv>it's not in that directory
00:54*mattcen installs Google Chrome and has a poke
00:55<mattcen>try /opt/google/chrome/google-chrome.desktop
00:55<mattcen>I cannot believe that Google *provide* a deb, and yet have it install the package into /opt :S
00:56<mattcen>justindv: For the record, I found that .desktop file using 'dpkg -L google-chrome-stable | grep desktop'
00:56<justindv>/opt/google/chrome/google-chrome.desktop tells be permission denied
00:57<mattcen>justindv: What do you want to do? Run Google Chrome, or create a launcher?
00:57<justindv>create a launcher, so that i may run it with ease
00:57-!-g0rs [] has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
00:59<mattcen>If you want to run it, the binary is in in /usr/bin/google-chrome. If you want to create a launcher, the best thing to do is probably copy that .desktop file into /usr/share/applications, which should put it in whatever applications menu you use
00:59<mattcen>justindv: What desktop environment do you use?
01:00<mattcen>In that case it will probably appear in Applications/Internet once you copy that .desktop file.
01:00-!-thierry [] has joined #debian
01:01<mattcen>So: 'cp /opt/google/chrome/google-chrome.desktop /usr/share/applications/' (as root or via sudo) should do the trick

09:56<themill>Golfgeo: indeed. I was going to suggest that you try that. You could use both host and guest from backports then you know they work together.
09:58<Golfgeo>themill, have setup two machines as servers and don't want to revert at this late date...
09:58<Golfgeo>but... vbox manual states: You may choose to keep the distribution's version of the Guest Additions but these are often not up to date and limited in functionality

14:20<daemonkeeper>You can also install a recursor on your own to achieve this. dnsmasq comes handy if you want to merge those tasks which gives you an easy possibility to access dynamically assigned names by their DNS domain.
14:20<daemonkeeper>Say, your phone requests an IP from your DHCP, you answer and you also automatically add a DNS pointer which makes it possible to do things like "ping"

14:26<daemonkeeper>A resolver does DNS lookups on behalf of a client. Typically you use the DNS resolver provided by your service provider.
14:26<daemonkeeper>However, if you want to avoid that for one or another reason, you can use your own.
14:27<thecircuitrider>conceptually I understand the whole picture. i know the place of the dns server, the interfaces, the lan and wan.
14:27<thecircuitrider>it is trying to link that to the configuration of each of the tools
