#debian IRC Logs for 2011-10-23

---Logopened Sun Oct 23 00:00:02 2011
00:00<bloopokaybleep>g0rs, I'm using xfce
00:01<Mephisto>KDE3.5 is like modern KDE, but many people find it nicer and it looks classic. That's why they've started that project
00:01<bloopokaybleep>oh, I've never used kde
00:01<Mephisto>you cannot customize KDE4 to look like KDE3.
00:01<g0rs>bloopokaybleep: kde is heavy and complicated.Gnome is simple and neat
00:02<g0rs>i'm running gnome and i'd like to try fluxbox and I have xcfe too.
00:02<Mephisto>kde is flexible
00:02<Mephisto>and looks professional
00:02<bloopokaybleep>fluxbox is okay
00:02<g0rs>Mephisto: yes, its the best feauture of kde , you can cusotmize it heavily.
00:02<bloopokaybleep>I wouldn't say gnome is simple and neat
00:02<bloopokaybleep>it's a little bloated
00:02<Mephisto>heavily? Gedaudahere :)
00:02<g0rs>yea, gnome has become bigger too but it is simpler than kde
00:02<Mephisto>gnome has issues
00:02<bloopokaybleep>tint2 + openbox is simple and neat
00:03<Mephisto>especially in debian
00:03<Mephisto>for example, it doesn't support java plugin normally. Trinity KDE does.
00:03<g0rs>debian has gnome on it if you choose a graphical environment.
00:03<bloopokaybleep>you can choose gnome or xfce
00:03<bloopokaybleep>or construct your own
00:03<Mephisto>from the scratch
00:03<bloopokaybleep>which is what I like
00:03<g0rs>i was running debian 6 and i ran gnome . it was the best :)
00:03<Mephisto>i have gnome+KDE
00:04<g0rs>Mephisto: i have gnome and kde as well
00:04<Mephisto>well i prefer to stay on KDE, gnome is just in case of emergency
00:04<bloopokaybleep>those aren't lightweight enough for me :P
00:04<g0rs>do you know if there are transparent themes in gnome to make all windows transparent , atleast those not in focus?
00:05<bloopokaybleep>are you talking to me?
00:05<g0rs>bloopokaybleep: i was going to use xcfe and fluxbox only for choosign a lightweight desktop.
00:05<g0rs>bloopokaybleep: either of you
00:05-!-thierry [] has joined #debian
00:05<bloopokaybleep>oh, no
00:06<bloopokaybleep>fluxbox is basically tint2 + openbox + a desktop background
00:07<bloopokaybleep>but its nice
00:07<Mephisto>that's what my KDE looks like
00:11<aharvey>g0rs: transparent windows: compiz will do that for you.

02:44<Hydroxide>aharvey: ssh-add (that uses ssh-agent)
02:45<Hydroxide>leon21: I haven't checked the specific ban list, but it's probably people abusing mibbit to violate #debian rules over there. if you're not the person abusing the rules over there, you can try using a normal IRC client or freenode's web chat. or ask your question here - this is anyway, not Freenode, though both #debian channels are run by the same team of ops
02:45<aharvey>Hydroxide: I tried that, but I would still need to enter the password once every login. How can I avoid that too?
02:45-!-hele_ [] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
02:45-!-freex_ [] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
02:46<Hydroxide>aharvey: that would be once per login for the local system, not once per login for the remote system. there's no secure way to avoid having to do that - unless you want anyone who gets access to your local machine to have automatic access to wherever the corresponding public key is installed
02:47-!-hubris [~Kevin@] has left #debian [Leaving]
02:47<Hydroxide>which is rarely a wise move.
02:47<leon21>Hydroxide: i dont mean mibbit. mibbit isnt allowed on freenode in general. i couldnt connect with freenode's webchat application. it sets +b
02:48-!-LegolasV [] has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
02:48<leon21>but not that important. i was just curious since i used it for that purpose a couple of days ago
02:48<Hydroxide>leon21: yes, it seems to have been banned over 4 days ago due to someone probably abusing it. I'll remove the ban for now, but it will certainly go back as needed if abused.
02:48<aharvey>Hydroxide: yes once per local system login. I never used to need to enter it at all when I was using gnome. If someone gains access to my machine won't they already have access to my private key anyway?
02:49<leon21>Hydroxide: dont do it for me. i can ask whats troubling me here :)
02:49<aharvey>Hydroxide: Sure once per system login is much better, thanks for the tip. But I would only do it if it adds some extra security.
02:51<Hydroxide>aharvey: what your previous gnome setup probably did - which distro was that? - was encrypt the private key (or some separate record of the private key's passphrase) with your local system login password, and then do the equivalent of ssh-add when you logged in. which, of course, makes your local system password automatically grant access to your remote system account
02:52<Hydroxide>aharvey: it is quite tricky to avoid the need to type a password of some kind without weaking security. some solutions could involve specially prepared USB sticks or smartcards, or biometric identifiers, but all of those have their own downsides of course.
02:52<Hydroxide>*without weakening security.
02:53<Hydroxide>leon21: I'll probably do it anyway - a 4-day-old ban has probably lost its reason for existence, unless I"m missing something, in which case some op will put it back in effect :) but, yes, feel free to ask your question here
02:54<leon21>ok, thanks a lot:)

02:54-!-freex_ [] has joined #debian
02:55<aharvey>Hydroxide: it was and still is debian. but I recently switched to xfce and upgraded a bunch of gnome specific ssh agent type packages. I think the method you described would be okay (having the private key passpharase encrypted by your local system login). assuming I have a good password for both it shouldn't weaken security should it?
02:55<Hydroxide>leon21: done.
02:56<Hydroxide>aharvey: depends on what you mean weaken. it does mean that your local system password plus access to your local system will automatically grant an attacker access to each remote system with that private key, even if they get your system while powered off with no active login sessions
02:57<Hydroxide>aharvey: if your remote system account's login password is something different, or if your remote system only allows key-based logins, that does weaken security
02:57-!-madsci44 [] has left #debian [Leaving]
02:57<Hydroxide>on the other hand, if an attacker installs a keylogger on your local computer and you log in remotely in a keylogged manner... :-) it all depends on your threat. and, btw, that actually happened to debian in 2003, before a bunch of the security measures that are now in place were implemented
02:57-!-stoffepojken [] has joined #debian
02:58<Hydroxide>(debian is much more resilient than it was then, and even then the archive asn't compromised)
02:59<Hydroxide>leon21: (done, btw)
02:59-!-stoffepojken [] has quit []
02:59<Hydroxide>err, already said that. heh
03:00<aharvey>the remote systems I'm logging into all use public key authentication, not password. if I'm keylogged then it won't matter which approach I take as an attacker will log the required key. are there any good articles on this for best practices?
03:01<Hydroxide>aharvey: definitely. I don't have links handy in my brain right now, sorry.
03:03<Hydroxide>anyway, I'm glad you're thinking about it. if you want to have your ssh keys unlocked and added to ssh-agent based on your local system password upon login, install and read the docs for the libpam-ssh package
03:03<Hydroxide>good luck finding the right security tradeoff
03:03<Hydroxide>that might apply to non-GUI logins too, depending on your pam config
03:03<aharvey>Hydroxide: thanks. I'll give libpam-ssh and try.

06:08<mitr>No there are many things that are different
06:08<mitr>like for example, there is no quick way to connect to a samba share
06:08<mitr>You have to go to activities, and then bring up files and then use the menus from there
06:09<mitr>I bet in future versions, they change the top bar to include more options

06:09<Bushmills>haven't tried that, though i'd go through autofs for smb/cifs anyway

06:10<mitr>Changing the default font is important... I like linux and use it but without MS fonts, it is not a very good experience

06:12<mitr>Also, there are not many distros that support it yet

06:12<mitr>to give it a good run you have to use Arch or Fedora
06:12<Bushmills>who cares what others support. i'd consider gnome3 a technology preview at this point anyway
06:13<mitr>Arch is a bit dodgy (no package signing) and Fedora completely changes the Gnome3 experience I bet... I don't know because it would not install on my hardware

23:04<dpkg>[dmm] Debian Multimedia is a repository of unofficial packages maintained by Christian Marillat, not in Debian for patent-related reasons. For information on how to access, see or ask me about <dmm squeeze> <dmm lenny>. During 2010, this repository grew a non-free part, with all binary-only packages moved there; you may need to add " non-free" to your sources lines. See also <dmm mirrors>, <dmm list>.
