08:30<shanks>hi all. question about lvm. i installed squeeze and chose to use lvm. I used my whole disk and it created some logical volumes for me (home, usr etc). I then needed to shrink home as it was wasting a lot of space. can i now relenquish this spare physical space so that i can remove it from lvm entirely? so that i can create a physical partition with the reclaimed space ? sorry if i've used any incorrect terminology

08:32<simonlnu>not sure how you'd do that without re-doing the pv...
08:33<arand>shanks: You can force freeing/moving of certain extents in a lvm so you'll get a physical layout which is empty at one end of the lvm, yes. It should also be possible to shrink the lvm in a somewhat roundabout way, there is a guide out there...

17:32<Nik05>hello guys :p
17:33<Nik05>What do you do when your internet is not working...? :P
17:33<dardevelin>can anyone suggest me a good easy program that allows me to make a complete backup of my current debian installation
17:33<Nik05>ifconfig doesnt give me eth0 or eth1
17:33<henr_k>Nik05: does ifconfig -a tell you anything?
17:33<Nik05>euh wait going to other pc :P
17:34<Nik05>yeah they show me eth0 and eth1 but they dont have an inet address
17:35<henr_k>have you configured them in /etc/network/interfaces or do you rely on network-manager to do it for you?
17:35<Nik05>euh it was working... but now its not :P
17:35<henr_k>ok.. you're not really providing me with a lot of info here
17:35<Nik05>i have no idea what interface or network-manager does... maybe i dont have network-manager
17:36<Nik05>i just installed it on that PC... :P
17:36<henr_k>and it runs squeeze?
17:36<Nik05>i could update fine yesterday
17:36<Nik05>yes
17:36<henr_k>tried ifup eth0 as root?
17:36<Nik05>but now aptitude update cant reach server
17:36<Nik05>euh now :P

17:37<henr_k>that should kick through everything in interfaces
17:37<henr_k>dardevelin: backup as in a tar-archive?
17:38<Nik05>ifup eth0 is not working but on eth1 its trying to do something
17:38<Nik05>he is doing something with DHCP sever 255.255.255.255
17:38<Nik05>and that is not good... :p
17:38<dardevelin>henr_k, dunno, just want really to have sort of a cd that i could reinstall my os with all my stuff
17:38<henr_k>yes, it's asking for an IP-address from the dhcp-server
17:39<Nik05>but how does it know what the ip of the dhcp server is?
17:39<henr_k>Nik05: have you removed any of the cables (or put the tp-cable into the wrong nic?
17:39<Nik05>cause it is not 255.255.255.255

17:39<Nik05>maybe my dhcp server just sucking -_-
17:39<henr_k>if you just want a mirror-image of the current one, dd is your friend. But that's a pretty crude backup-tool to be hones
