07:14<madduck>what are the pros and cons of partitioning 6Tb of space into multiple LVs with LVM over just having a single filesystem?
07:15<ompaul>madduck: would you be angry if I said "many"
07:15<jm_>heh fsck time should be a good reason
07:15<madduck>many pros or many cons?
07:15<madduck>jm_: ext4 alleviates that a lot, and 3×2Tb isn't much different than 1×6Tb

07:16<madduck>ompaul: you mean "you don't want 6Tb"?

07:17<jm_>madduck: I thought that's only true if there's lots of free space, or am I wrong?
07:17<madduck>jm_: I do not know, but ext4 is certainly a lot faster…
07:18<ompaul>madduck: and if you are going to do multiple lvm partions you get to create slices or spaces that you can leave alone when you upgrade giving your data some chance of survival
07:19<ompaul>madduck: and as you will do it your way, I suggest you write down what you think the pros and cos are on paste.debian.net and then invite comments about things missed, so you get the best global picture

08:25<mentor>shanks: Any data written causes a difference between the snapshot and main. Hence you have to copy the original.
08:26<arand>shanks: It recieves a copy whenever the data that was snapshotted is changed, and is allocated a certain quota, when that quote overflows, the snapshot is dropped.
08:27<arand>shanks: So having one snapshot basically doubles the I/O workload, as far as I can tell

10:08<dardevelin>souliaq, ubuntu stable branch is based on debian testing and ubuntu cutting edge is based on sid so that shows why

11:15<ballison>jhutchins: two databases. one in fort lauderdale (FTL) and one in Atlanta (ATL). the FTL one was down for nearly a day
11:16<ballison>we did a repair, but now he wants to verify the data has no gaps....
11:16<jhutchins_lt>ballison: Master or slave?

13:06<DYSW>Why not just install it
13:07<DYSW>many apps wont work as intended even if you can install to memoery as well. A live cd is made with the intention of being just that live. nothing else
13:07<querier1>it does dont work at all due to i/o errros
13:07<themill>querier1: "sudo apt-get install packagename" should work just fine.
13:08<DYSW>try it cant hurt, my guess is that it wont work at all. didnt when i tried to run apt-get install apache on live ubuntu a while back

13:09<querier1>themill: im familiar with that. thats not the issue. I guess when I built the livecd then its protected. perhaps lb config exposed-root lets me do this.
13:09<themill>that should work when booted into the live cd too

13:10<jhutchins_lt>querier1: Most live CD's will allow you to install software as if they were running from a RW drive. You might be limited by the amount of RAM/Swap available, but that would be all.
13:11<jhutchins_lt>querier1: If it's doing something else then it's a non-standard configuration.

18:39<Arpuus>Should i count the cached ram as well ?
18:39<sney>!free memory
18:39<dpkg>Unlike information, your computer's memory does *not* want to be free. Free RAM is wasted RAM! Linux tries to use free physical memory for caching files from disk which speeds up disk access considerably. Linux releases RAM from these caches if programs need it. If you want to know how much physical memory the free(1) tool says you have left for program use, it's 'free' + 'buffers' + 'cache'. Also ask me about <swapwake>.

18:41<Arpuus>Problem is that im running a test setup on my localbox. gave it 1gb ram as much as our real vps will have in a week. But with just apache2, mysql, apc installed and only me visiting the test server there is only 120mb ram left
18:42<jhutchins_lt>Arpuus: You're not paying attention.
18:42<Arpuus>the question is will the 1gb vps we got be enough for the site when it gets 2000 user visists a day
18:42<Arpuus>it have happend before
18:42<jhutchins_lt>Arpuus: Possibly not. You will have to use iostat to watch for swap activity and tune apache accordingly, or add more ram.
18:43<jhutchins_lt>Arpuus: You also want RAM to be able to cache SQL results for better speed.
18:43<Arpuus>The problem with the first part you mention is i have no idea what you mean. Second problem, if i install the server, transfer our site and its not enough ram i will have to take the site down and reinstall the entire server. = downtime

18:44<retrospectacus>it depends what the site does, but I'd say 1G is plenty
18:44<retrospectacus>it's a simple command to increase the amount of ram on a vps
18:44<Arpuus>its just a phpBB3 board and a mediawiki

18:45<Arpuus>depends on the vps, our vps is qemu, just like a virtualbox on your own computer and as far as i know that requires a reinstall of system to set swap right

18:48<Arpuus>i tried that, even if i change it in virtualbox and reboot the vbox it doesnt really work. But only tried it once, so i could be wrong
