04:10<dardevelin>its the source of quickly that i "ported" from ubuntu
04:10<dardevelin>gonna hack on it a bit (at least try) make it more compatible with debian
04:11<mns>you have to apply permission to a specific file. your permission to a dir may differ from a file

04:19<dardevelin>the second one is for ?
04:19<mns>dardevelin: to change the file permissions
04:19<mns>and you could change the -exec line to 640
04:20<mns>if you want
04:21<dardevelin>problem is i'm not that familiar with this values... i know a bit for the server ( but filezilla does it all for me usually )
04:21<mns>dardevelin: the check if it gets right with ls -lR
04:21<dardevelin>so what makes precisely this commands target folders and directories
04:21<cthuluh>chmod -R u+x . # will put all directories and files to the same permissions
04:22<cthuluh>hence no file will be found with 666 permission, for example
04:22<cthuluh>so you need an other way to distinguish files from directories
04:22<dardevelin>ok, now definitely Huber confused :/
04:23<dardevelin>lets see if i got it right
04:23<dardevelin>home folder ( i made a mistake of doing chmod u+x * )

04:23<dardevelin>now to revert as mns said i used chmod 750 *
04:24<cthuluh>ok, so you didn't change permissions on your dotfiles / dot-directories, where sensitive stuff is kept
04:24<dardevelin>is that alright from there ?
04:24<cthuluh>that's not enough
04:24<dardevelin>ok whats the next step then ?
04:25<cthuluh>chmod 640 *; chmod 750 */
04:25<cthuluh>should be enough
04:25<cthuluh>it will change all files and directories to 640, and then change directories permissions to 750
04:26<dardevelin>ok, so whats exacly happening with that command ( i want to understand so i can learn and next time don't bother you guys :D)
04:26<dardevelin>ok nice
04:26<cthuluh>but those two commands do *not* recurse

04:27<dardevelin>just used exactly like you typed
04:27<dardevelin>chmod 640 *; chmod 750 */
04:27<cthuluh>yup, plain non-hidden files will get 640 permissions
04:28<mns>dardevelin: you can do it with : find youdir -type d -exec chmod 750 {} \;
04:28<mns>only for dirs
04:28<cthuluh>he doesn't need recursion ; please...
04:28<mns>dardevelin: you can do it with : find youdir -type f -exec chmod 640 {} \;
04:28<mns>only for files
04:28<mns>all together
04:29<cthuluh>sigh ; he *didn't* use chmod -R
04:30<mns>cthuluh: he said that he wanted Recursively
04:30<dardevelin>mns, yes for the particular folder that i want to change
04:30<dardevelin>but in that process i made crap with my home directory

04:59<msalman>thats why.
04:59<ayaka>babilen, ok
04:59<babilen>msalman: I typically use stow in the rare case that I want to install software that hasn't already been packaged for Debian.
04:59<babilen>msalman: Which version do you need?
04:59<msalman>i already have installed djbdns-1.05
05:00<msalman>just tell me, how to install a similar copy in /usr/local
05:01<msalman>like. does it mean, I first copy this install directory to /usr/local and then type make there ?
05:02<babilen>msalman: You would pass a suitable --prefix to its configure script. But I would rather recommend to backport is from sid, which should be fairly easy. The procedure is explained in "/msg dpkg ssb" -- Also note that djbdns is not in squeeze and that there likely is a good reason for that.

07:17<madduck>jm_: I do not know, but ext4 is certainly a lot faster…

08:27<arand>shanks: So having one snapshot basically doubles the I/O workload, as far as I can tell

18:39<Arpuus>Quick question about ram usage
18:39<Arpuus>Should i count the cached ram as well ?
18:39<sney>!free memory
18:39<dpkg>Unlike information, your computer's memory does *not* want to be free. Free RAM is wasted RAM! Linux tries to use free physical memory for caching files from disk which speeds up disk access considerably. Linux releases RAM from these caches if programs need it. If you want to know how much physical memory the free(1) tool says you have left for program use, it's 'free' + 'buffers' + 'cache'. Also ask me about <swapwake>.

18:42<Arpuus>it have happend before
18:42<jhutchins_lt>Arpuus: Possibly not. You will have to use iostat to watch for swap activity and tune apache accordingly, or add more ram.
18:43<jhutchins_lt>Arpuus: You also want RAM to be able to cache SQL results for better speed.
18:43<Arpuus>The problem with the first part you mention is i have no idea what you mean. Second problem, if i install the server, transfer our site and its not enough ram i will have to take the site down and reinstall the entire server. = downtime

22:15<molo>can anyone point me to the correct way to configure a static ipv6 address on lenny or squeeze? it seems that "inet6 static" in /etc/network/interfaces is not sufficient. also tried disabling autoconf and accept_ra options in /proc, but still does autoconf. Any ideas?
