04:55<shanks>any reason why /dev/st0 gets buggered up every now and then? it's no longer a special file.
04:56<shanks>ah, I think st0 is no longer recognised so it doesn't appear under /dev. when I tar to it, it's therefore just writing a regular file rather than writing to a block device. and then fills up the filesystem.
04:57<Myon>probably because it isn't there and when someone tries to write to it, it gets created as a a plain file

09:26<j0sfg>my laptop cpu is Intel Celeron (Coppermine) 647mhz 128k cache with "pae" but no "nx". 192m ram. debian testing/wheezy minimal install using <700M of diskspace. linux-image-3.0.0-1-686-pae was auto installed on upgrade as i have linux-image-686. i want to understand if i should use the pae kernel or move to linux-image-486 which i'm told is more efficient for small systems?

13:09<jthomas>and the drive is mounted by KDE
13:09<jthomas># mkfs.ext4 -L drivename /dev/sdf1
13:10<jthomas>it pops up in KDE and i can mount it, but the drive is owned by root
13:11-!-Bonzey [~understir@89-139-2-128.bb.netvision.net.il] has joined #debian
13:11<jthomas>so i suppose i can change the owner to me (chmod -R 700 ) but on another system, who will have that 700 access ?
13:12<jhutchins_lt>jthomas: You can set the drive up in fstab to mount rw for users.
13:12<jthomas>not in fstab tho, this mounts with KDE. its a removable drive
13:13<jthomas>it won't always bve here, it won't always be /dev/sdf1
13:13<jthomas>i'm not certina but its bascally mounted with 'pmount' like methods, it seems
13:13<jhutchins_lt>!rwvfat
13:13<dpkg>To get write access to a <vfat> partition when mounting it with fstab, use the line "/dev/partition /mount/point vfat defaults,user,uid=USERID,gid=GROUPID,umask=002 0 0" in /etc/fstab. umask=002 will make the partition rwxrwxr-x, while umask=022 will make it rwxr-xr-x. Get your user/group ids with the command "id".
13:14<jthomas>not vfat
13:14<jthomas>not fstab
13:14<jhutchins_lt>Principle's the same.
13:14<jthomas>not at all; i have root here so thats an option but on another system, my UID is different and I may not have root
13:14<jthomas>this isn't an fstab type mount, its a removable drive
13:15<jhutchins_lt>Whatever, good luck.
13:15<jthomas>i am asking for help, not luck :D

13:17<jthomas>i don't think you follow, or maybe i don't follow. but if i format as ext4 a removable drive, i need to explicitly set permissions for my account to access it. on another system i may not have the rights (no root, no sudo) to explicitly set my access permissions, and since they're carried over from the first system, is my account on the second system out of luck?
13:17<aeb>you could always make it readable and writable for everyone, but then everyone gets access

14:46<aeb>you can simple create a branch based on the checked out commit by doing "git checkout -b branchname" — this will checkout the branch "branchname" which is created at the same time based on the current checkout

14:47<mike909>just curios, how did you know the actual git address used in the git clone command? From kernel.org?
14:49<aeb>mike909: I looked it up, yes. git.kernel.org and I knew there is a stable tree, so once you found it on the list and followed the link, you'll get the summary page with everything on it: http://git.kernel.org/?p=linux/kernel/git/stable/linux-stable.git;a=summary
