00:06<shanet>Hi guys, I am having problems with my time displaying wrong. It is 8 hours in front. I am using the package which is supposed to automatically update time off a server however I can not remember its name.
00:06<shanet>Is there any way to have it refresh the current time off the server?
00:07<JoeKickass>ntp does that. You may just need to adjust your time zone
00:08-!-soundaxis [] has joined #debian
00:08<shanet>Thats the one, ntp. It should know my timezone. It was fine yesterday.
00:08<shanet>How do I check the timezone?
00:08<JoeKickass>the output of "date" will include it
00:09<shanet>According to my time/date settings it knows my correct location, and when I click on the app in the corner of my screen it knows the location
00:09<JoeKickass>to set it run "dpkg-reconfigure tzdata" as root
00:10<shanet>It does know the correct timezone. Will that refresh ntp?
00:11<shanet>Local time is now: Tue Nov 15 21:10:34 WST 2011.
00:11<shanet>Universal Time is now: Tue Nov 15 13:10:34 UTC 2011.
00:11<shanet>My local time should be what it says universal time is. Does that mean the servers are out?
00:12<JoeKickass>no it probably means you booted windows and it updated your hardware clock
00:13<shanet>I did boot windows... stupid crappy Microsoft D:
00:13<shanet>I had to help a friend remove a virus and it was giving me windows xp instructions so I had to make sure I was telling her the correct stuff for windows 7... grrr
00:13<shanet>so in other words I need to reset the clock in BIOS?
00:14<JoeKickass>no I believe the "hwclock" command can fix it. man hwclock

06:59<Zaba>qwerty1, sums it up pretty well
06:59<qwerty1>but why do people say make your swapfile as big as ram?
06:59<petemc>to use suspend to disk
06:59<TCW>Dmitry, swap WAS a solution when RAM was expensive. It was never a performance-wise good solution, but it was a solution to a nasty "oh shit, no more RAM left, I am screwed!"-problem. That problem is for 99% of all people gone. So swap is not that important anymore.
06:59<Zaba>TCW, wrong
07:00<TCW>Zaba, why?
07:00<Zaba>it's not for "oh crap, no more RAM!", it's for "oh, this process needs RAM right now, and this one seems to be idle, so let's swap it out"

07:11<TCW>Dmitry, regarding ext3 or 4... you choose. ext4 is considered to be stable, but if you are a paranoid guy, stick with ext3. Apart from that, ext4 is faster and a fairly modern filesystem.
07:12<TCW>Dmitry, and the swap thing... how did you choose there and why?
07:12<Dmitry>TCW, paranoid... well... a little bit :D I just want to know, is ext4 stable enough in 2.6.32 kernel (squeeze)? I heard about some issues

07:15<TCW>Dmitry, if you have the slightest doubts, use ext3. But I only heard about ext4 issues with ubuntu and that were not bugs, it was a matter of a somewhat wrong implementation / wrong defaults.

07:16<TCW>Dmitry, and according to many many users and sysadmins, ext4 IS stable, even with 2.6.32.

14:31<vlsoft>Just a quick (though long) question: I have two interfaces bridged, ebtables-managed tables are empty... I have added a rule like this: iptables -t nat -A POSTROUTING -o br0 -s ! -d -j SNAT --to-source < is the IP of the bridge, gateway is at and the machines use that gw., while this bridging box sits between the gw. and the machines. I know that even if brouting is not used, p
14:31<vlsoft>ackets traverse some iptables chains... Is this a safe assumption that this'll make all packets coming from machines on the non-gw side of the bridge get NAT-ed if it is destined outside of this private network? This is only a test scenario right now, it would work with some other "live" subnets at a computer lab at a University; what they want is to hide the machines from the outside world, while allowing them to communicate with anyt
14:31<vlsoft>hing, but they have to be accessible on the Uni. network without the NAT present. - the shown example "looks like it'll work", I would like to have some input on this from others...

14:59<vlsoft>also you can try alt+<rightarrow> or alt+<leftarrow>, on a "text" tty this works up to the point it encounters a gui running on some of the ttys (as ctrl-alt is only necessary when there's a GUI environment on that tty)

23:46<jyre>hello folks
23:46<jyre>i am trying to install debian using pxeboot
23:47<jyre>but i am not sure how to the wireless router as the default gateway using wlan0
23:47-!-vladuke [~vladuke@] has joined #debian
23:47<jyre>if anyone could help that would be cool
23:48<cthuluh>well, setup wlan0
23:48<cthuluh>oh wait, you want to access your pxe server via a wireless interface?
23:49<jyre>no the computer on which i want to install debian is connected to my laptop through eth0
23:49<jyre>but in order to continue the installation i have to connect to a debian server through the wlan0 default gateway
23:50<jyre>i think there must be something i have to do with the dhcpd.conf to set this up properly but i am not sure
23:50<cthuluh>well, do you have wpa on your AP? if so, you won't be able to use wireless to continue the install
23:51<jyre>i am connected to the access point through wlan0 right now

23:51<cthuluh>on your laptop or on the machine you're installing on?
23:51<jyre>'ip route show' shows "default via dev wlan0"
23:51<jyre>on my laptop
23:52<jyre>oh are you saying that i have to provide wpa on eth0 of my laptop?
23:52<jyre>i am confused
23:52<cthuluh>nope, not at all :)
23:52<cthuluh>I was confused, sorry
23:53<cthuluh>what I'd do, if I were you, would be to give the new a default route via your laptop's eth0 ip address

23:54<cthuluh>and then perform nat on your laptop, so that the AP thinks that the new mahcine is your laptop
23:54<cthuluh>that involves two subnets: the one on your wireless link, and the other between your laptop and the new machine

23:56<cthuluh>jyre: can you see why I'm thinking about this solution?
23:56<jyre>yeah, i thought about something like that but i don't know enough to properly set up nat
23:57<cthuluh>use SNAT/MASQUERADE
23:57<jyre>do i have to set up the default route using the dhcpd.conf file?
23:57-!-Mr_xyz [] has left #debian [Verlassend]
23:57<cthuluh>iptables -t nat -A POSTROUTING -o wlan0 -j MASQUERADE # or somehting
23:58<cthuluh>jyre: you're not forced to use dhcp
