14:38<Furtchet>Hello all. I'm doing a presentation on Debian for my undergrad OS class, and I was wondering where to find this kind of information: Identify and describe the policies of a) Process Scheduling, b) Memory Management, and c) Secondary Storage Management.
14:38<damiano>poisonbit, i dunno.. how do i check?
14:39<__Alex_>I have a Asus USB Digital TV stick, and i can't seem to find a way to get it to work. It is wery badly documentated, and i can't seem to find a way to get it to work. Google dodn't solve my problem

14:42<devil>that id

19:00<abrotman>!unmarkauto
19:00<dpkg>Is apt trying to remove packages that it thinks were automatically installed? This happens when you "aptitude install gnome" and then later remove bits of it causing the gnome meta-package to be uninstalled and then all its dependencies. Fix this by running "aptitude unmarkauto packagename" on strategically chosen packages, or reinstall the <metapackage> (apt-get also has unmarkauto from squeeze onwards).

20:27<damiano>here, do this.
20:27<damiano>it wouldn't hurt a bit.
20:27<damiano>basically it just overwrites your existing ALSA settings which if does not good then definitely doesn't make it worse.

20:28<damiano>MJ23, gnome 2 is definitely more charming, yes.
20:28<damiano>that's out of the question i guess.
20:29<damiano>gnome 3 seems to be a mockery.
20:29<damiano>it's not better. It's just different and not in the best way.
20:29<sney>the great thing about open source is that you can take the source of something, fork it, make it different and maintain it in that new form
20:30<sney>for instance, gnome 2
20:30<damiano>perhaps. Has anyone succeeded in putting Gnome 2 back on a system which formally does not support it anymore?

20:35<Nothingman>I'm starting now
20:35<damiano>ok.

20:35<sney>module-assistant doesn't replace anything that would normally be upgraded through apt anyway. it's just kernel modules.
20:35<damiano>one little fix: it's module-assistant there, not module assistant :)
20:35<damiano>sney, it does.
20:35<Nothingman>anyway
20:35<Nothingman>damiano: I'm running my own kernel version

20:36<damiano>you may check in synaptic though.
20:36<Nothingman>I'll check
20:36<damiano>type 'ALSA' and tell me what you get.
20:36<sney>well, nothing that would be upgraded through apt _on its own_. it would be replaced on a kernel upgrade. but squeeze doesn't get kernel upgrades that replace the module tree so *shrug*
20:36<damiano>it's a lame way, but it's the fastest.
20:37<Nothingman>I see alsa-base/utils etc on 1.0.23
20:37<damiano>yep... dfsg-2?
20:38<Nothingman>Yup.... but the drivers are in the kernel, isn't it?
20:38<damiano>yeah, so anyway, do it.

23:23<andersonbr>where's "login screen setup" on squeeze?
23:24<damiano>Menu -> System -> Administration
23:25<andersonbr>damiano, can't find it there...there's only login screen which i can't change the gdm theme
23:25<damiano>well you can't change gdm theme unless you install a different session manager.
23:26<damiano>like kdm of xdm

23:26<andersonbr>so you mean i have to have two of them?
23:27<damiano>well... yes, you may install another one, but you have to switch to it afterwards.
23:27<piney0>Is there a way to make a system 'less likely' to use swap? http://pastebin.com/JgMHCwzX - thats the output of free if that helps
23:27<andersonbr>alrite then!!! thx...but giving up on it :P
23:28<damiano>good decision actually :0
23:28<damiano>never mess with linux if it's of little importance :)
23:28<damiano>trust me on that.
23:28<damiano>especially if you lack experience with it.
23:29<andersonbr>i know...i'm having some troubles already that i can't still fix em
23:29<damiano>piney0, i don't use swap at all. I mean.. i have no partition for it.
23:29<damiano>piney0, my memory is enough to handle it.
23:29<piney0>this is a 512mb vps. I never OOM'd, but still think i should have swap
23:30<damiano>ah... yeah, that's for sure man
23:30<damiano>i'd suggest you make like at least 5gb swap.
23:30-!-GeekMer [~GeekMer@201.160.179.225.cable.dyn.cableonline.com.mx] has quit []
23:30<piney0>I just don't see why it's using swap when there is memory available.
23:31<ml|>piney0: since you only have 512MB, better to leave things as is
23:31<damiano>yeah, i don't get it either. Broken memory plank?..
23:31<damiano>but probably because it's too little.

23:31<damiano>the thing is, it uses swap to optimize the job.
23:32<damiano>cause the rest of your memory might be pre-reserved.
23:32<damiano>for better performance
23:33<piney0>ok, I'll leave it alone. Thanks for the input.
23:34<damiano>you know the old rule.. if it works don't you f..ng fix it :)
23:34-!-toshiba [~toshiba@68.50.132.233] has joined #debian
23:35<damiano>that goes especially for linux... it may get funky any moment and you'd never know why. Unless you reproduce the mistake many times and re-install OS like 100 of times
23:35<toshiba>how do i install microsoft office 2010 on ubuntu 11.10
23:35<damiano>you need to use Wine + playonlinux front-end
23:35<damiano>to see what you really can run without problems.
23:36<damiano>but if i were you i'd not do it. I'd just use OpenOffice/LibreOffice.
23:36<damiano>they're pretty much compatible with the latest Microsoft formats.
23:36<damiano>and running anything through wine is, in my opinion, last thing you should do. If there's no alternative at all.
23:36-!-codekick [~codekick@178.22.169.138] has joined #debian
23:36<piney0>I would stay away from ms office on *nix. go with one of the alternatives if that's an option
23:37<damiano>true.
23:37<ml|>dpkg: ubuntu-irc toshiba
23:37<dpkg>toshiba: This is not the Ubuntu help channel. Please do /server irc.freenode.net and then /join #ubuntu. If you are using XChat, you can right-click the following link and choose connect. irc://irc.freenode.net/ubuntu
23:37<damiano>if you really want it that bad then it's better to install Office 2003+ office 2007 compatibility pack. It's lighter, faster and probably more compatible with Wine.
23:38<damiano>m1| that goes for Debian too actually.
23:38<ml|>damiano: does not matter ubuntu is not supported here
23:38<damiano>:)
23:38<damiano>ok.
23:39<damiano>can anyone tell me why do i get two terminals launched (one is actually missing as it appears later) if using menu's root terminal?
23:39-!-toshiba [~toshiba@68.50.132.233] has quit [Quit: Leaving]
23:40<damiano>one opens and the other one is attempting to startup but then it just dissappears.
23:40<damiano>i just wanna know what caused this to happen.

23:56<asdfaerg>It depends on what you're using office for
23:57<asdfaerg>i work with a lot of equations in word documents and libre/open do not work with them at all
23:57<asdfaerg>they are completely mangled, disappeared, etc
23:57<asdfaerg>i ended up running real msoffice in a virtual machine
