01:02<jdc>i'm an old bsd user with debian experience ten years back, and i'm trying it again after some time on macs and then ubuntu. i've got an issue that i haven't been able to resolve through research, and i wonder if anyone would like to help me out. i installed debian stable on a machine, then modified sources.list to upgrade to unstable. the process seems to have gone ok, but the system...
01:02<jdc>...loads to x and i get total static/flicker; i haven't yet been able to reconfigure x or repair it.

The kernel identifies the device correctly, but after around 3 seconds the device is suddenly being disconnected ( How can I find out what is the reason for that?

07:33<scraze>ceipha: if it does the USB Disconnect thing on multiple machines, there's a good chance that the stick itself is broken :(
07:33-!-technologov [] has joined #debian
07:35<ceipha>scraze, that's what I suppose. I want to troubleshoot the USB stick itself, but I want to localize the problem.
07:37<ceipha>scraze: The /var/log/messages is not very informative here, it just says that the device is found, identified and disconnected. Without giving reason for the disconnect. I want to know exactly on what stage the problem occured. Are there better places to search for this information than /var/log/messages?
07:37<scraze>hm, particularly if you have an identical model that is working, it's most likely a hardware problem (like burnt / dislodged chips) .. but I suppose you could get a lot of information through USB kernel module debugging (or perhaps with a quick lsusb -v while the device is still attached)

09:19<daemonkeeper>The discussion is, whether such Web-APIs are a substantial part of the software or not. I'd hope most software in main using any of these APIs does not need it for fundamental parts, e.g. think of APIs of music players.
09:20<technologov>daemonkeeper: y, i agree, that for packages that use casual features (non-critical part) it is OK to stay in main - example: Web Browsers
09:21<technologov>But (!) I speak about Facebook plugins and other such software
09:21<technologov>(weather plugins and more...)
09:22<technologov>For web browsers - this is just extra functionality - they are useful without it.
09:23<technologov>But some packages are clearly useless without non-free web service, and the goal is to remove those from 'main' repo.
09:23<daemonkeeper>Well, a random weather plugin is part of a larger desktop application suite collection and is typically not tied to a given service or using a given service API.
09:23<daemonkeeper>You're opening Pandora's box.
09:24<daemonkeeper>Following your interpretation every other package would be non-free as most applications are somehow interacting with network peers.
09:24<technologov>sure? look here:
09:24<technologov>example of broken package, due to non-free web dependency.
09:24<technologov>My point is that Debian cannot support such packages equally well as truly Free software.
09:25<technologov>no no no... my opinion is - whenever there is 'interchanable server' or not
09:26<technologov>if u can install both client and server on same machine - localhost - then it is 'OK'
09:26<technologov>If you cannot - then maybe it should go to 'contrib'
09:26-!-byonk [] has joined #debian
09:26<daemonkeeper>Well, the weather plugins are content scrapers. The logic is trivial, it's the non-free data source which makes it complicated.
09:27<daemonkeeper>Obviously you can run a web server locally (or on a free machine) being contacted by a weather plugin.
09:27<daemonkeeper>It does not mean you could feed it with helpful data.
09:28<technologov>Such things, IMO, belong to 'contrib', as they depend on non-free service, which is worse than dependency on non-free lib.
09:28<technologov>(technically non-free web service is more likely to break)
09:29-!-chals [] has left #debian [Fare Thee Well]
09:29<daemonkeeper>I do not think our DFSG qualifies such cases as non-free. In fact it makes no assumptions at all on the usability of a program without non-free data sources.
09:29<technologov>Look for (my) definition of truly free web service:
09:30<technologov>Can we agree on this ?
09:30<technologov>Well, there is no problem with DFSG. Right. But the dependency is problematiuc, as this will fail Debian's 'Desert Island' test.
09:31<technologov>Software, that depends on non-free library can also pass DFSG :)
09:32<technologov>So DFSG does not bring any restrictions on dependency, only on software itself.
09:33-!-simNIX [] has joined #debian
09:35<daemonkeeper>No, you're wrong. The desert island test deals with isolated modification and dissemination. It does not deal with the usability of a given piece of software without a peer.
09:35<daemonkeeper>Also, we're off-topic here, but you can continue the discussion in #debian-offtopic
09:36<daemonkeeper>The bottom line of the desert island test is to deal with advertising clauses.
09:36<technologov>why offtopic ? This is a freedom problem for Debian. (perhaps not technical, but political)

09:43<daemonkeeper>I do not disagree, you are ethically right. In fact some people consider such a dependency fulfilling the GPL criteria of a derivative work. I am just pointing out that such software is perfectly DFSG free and that is what counts when dividing software into main or other sections, because the client license is certainly free. However, you're opening Pandora's box if you are requiring the _data_ such software uses would need to be free as well.
09:43<daemonkeeper>Technically, the interfaces are certainly free and open. It's the data which causes you problems. But you could equally say "oh, but with this text editor only DFSG free texts must be written".

13:46<Nik05>who wrote CUPS, Americans? :P
13:47<daleko>but i want to learn
13:47<Torsten_W>daleko, a good start would be
13:47<Nik05>I have problems with printing at A4 paper.
13:47<Nik05>When I set my printer settings in CUPS to A4 it doesnt print correct
13:47<Nik05>when I manually set the height and width of A4 paper it prints correctly
13:47<melmothX_>Nik05: it may depend on a lot of things, first and foremost the printer drivers
13:48<daleko>tnx people you are so kind :)
13:48<dardevelin>melmothX_, i think he is using the wrong default template for the size of A4
13:49<melmothX_>dardevelin: only the god in the machine knows, so far
13:49<dardevelin>melmothX_, if was a driver problem , it should be present even with correct measures, because it was miss control over the machine
13:49<Nik05>And where does the A4 template come from?
13:50<dardevelin>Nik05, i think depends on the configurations you have set and also witch program
13:50<Nik05>lp, lpr, geany doesnt print correct when using A4
13:50<dardevelin>basically what ideally you would want, would be that when you hit print, it knows the correct size without you having to insert it manually
13:50<Nik05>but does print correct when setting 210 x 297

13:53<dardevelin>i think the app is oriented to inch in it's calculations
13:54<dardevelin>and so is the unit measure of the program , and i'm afraid you can't change that
13:54<dardevelin>you do can add custom sizes for printing
13:54<dardevelin>where you set how many inch from top, bottom, left, right (width, height)
13:55<ion_>I am curious to know what irc client supports ssl or how to enable ssl for various irc channels?
13:55<Nik05>dardevelin, this still doesnt fix it for lp
13:55<Nik05>even when im using lp -o media=a4
13:56<dardevelin>humm, try create your own template and call for that one
13:56<dardevelin>btw isn't A4 instead of a4 ?
13:57<dardevelin>and you might want to select on the format for
13:57<dardevelin>and select whatever needs to be selected
13:57<melmothX_>Nik05: just to be sure, did you go to localhost:631 and set the default paper format?
13:57<Nik05>yes its A4
13:57<ion_>my xchat always defaults to port 9999 and nothing else. :(

18:53<cthuluh>jaapnieuwland: you generate a key pair, and then a a csr ; you submit the csr to geotrust ; geotrust gives you a certificate ; you feed apache with the key pair and the csr

21:39<sney>it's a pretty quiet wav. you might need to turn it up a bit.
21:39<theocrite>zykotick9: no. It stops the music being played in mpd, but mplayer still makes no sound. Even if I relaunch it after mpd being stopped.
21:39<theocrite>sney: ok.

21:40<sney>I hate troubleshooting sound issues. from what I remember, alsa doesn't like having more than 1 program trying to give it sound output at a time.
21:40<sney>so something like pulseaudio could even _solve_ your issue, though I know even less about using it
21:41<theocrite>sney: I hate that too. And I totally understand it can bother you. Thanks for trying to help despite that.
21:42<sney>you called it a bug. has anyone else reported the same behaviour on

21:42<theocrite>sney: As far as I know, my soundcard has hardware stuff that allows multiple sounds at one time. That's why I never needed to set a asourdrc configuration (or something). Well that's what I was told a long time ago. I might be wrong.
21:43<theocrite>sney: I didn't check yet (sorry?), I'll do it right now. I'll consider reporting and/or testing with pulseaudio.
21:43<theocrite>Even tho I'm scared it might break more things that it fixes. :)

21:44*theocrite will check bug reports for alsa and mpd. Not sure if there is a use to check bug reports for mplayer, vlc etc.

21:48<sney>it would probably be under mpd since that's what introduced the behaviour
21:52<jw>ok I just created .asoundrc and that solved the problem that was bugging me since Friday evening thank you sney!
21:53<sney>jw: no problem
21:53<sney>theocrite: I'm out for a bit, if you're still here when I get back I'll follow up
21:54<theocrite>sney: I'm following not sure if it's the same problem. I'll try what I can. Don't think I'll be here when you'll be back (it's late), but thanks a lot for the help.
