00:15<technologov_>Why do we need tasks (tasksel), as opposed to more meta-packages ?
00:17<Bushmills>a task is a meta package by another name

00:18<technologov_>not in Debian. Debian uses "tasksel" for tasks, or groups of packages.
00:18<chealer>technologov_: tasksel is mostly designed for the installer
00:18<technologov_>Which is kinda over-lapping with meta-packages

06:39<mjt>hostname or address?
06:39<kikinovak>yeah that's what I could manage so for with RH or Slackware
06:39<kikinovak>hostname
06:40<mjt>usually each machine knows itself by its own hostname
06:40<kikinovak>mjt: on RH and Slackware I could even do without that
06:40<kikinovak>can come in handy for bigger computer rooms
06:40<kikinovak>where you decide in the end how to name each machine
06:40<mjt>yes sure you can omit hostname, it will be (null) by default
06:40<kikinovak>yeah I know

06:41<kikinovak>I think before jumping through burning loops trying to get this behaviour on Debian, I'll just do with the static /etc/hostname.

06:43<kikinovak>The question would have been: how do I manage client's hostnames 100% on the server side?
06:43-!-miggs [~miggs@188.24.35.31] has quit []
06:43<kikinovak>... so if I decide that a client is not called "poste03" anymore but "poste12", I can configure this on the server.
06:43<mjt>there's no simple answer
06:44<kikinovak>and a complicated one?
06:44<mjt>some services depends on the hostname being set
06:45<kikinovak>on RH machines I have the HOSTNAME variable in /etc/sysconfig/ that's set to 'localhost'... but then eventually the "real" hostname gets sent by the DHCP server.
06:45<mjt>for example (and this might be relevant or not), mdadm (software raid arrays manager) by default assembles all arrays it found on the accessible drives -- arrays which are marked as belonging to current hostname
06:45<kikinovak>And hostname --fqdn returns something like poste03.domain.tld and not localhost
06:45<mjt>you can do the same on debian
06:46<mjt>but see an example i just provided - you at least have to reconfigure it if you use mdadm like that.
06:46<kikinovak>you mean put 'localhost' in /etc/hostname and expect it to be overwritten later ?
06:46<mjt>yes
06:46<kikinovak>ok 1 min I'll give it a try
06:46<mjt>nothing actually uses /etc/hostname directly except of /etc/init.d/hostname.sh
06:47<mjt>all the rest uses uname(2)
06:47-!-gry [gryllida@95.154.195.120] has quit []
06:48<mjt>now, depending on your dhcp client and its config, you may need to tweak the part in it which sets the hostname
06:48<kikinovak>mjt: so I gave it a shot. didn't work.
06:48<mjt>heh
06:49<kikinovak>and how would your last suggestion look in practice ?
06:49<mjt>"depending on your dhcp client and its config"
06:49<kikinovak>yeah
06:49<mjt>f.e. i use udhcpc and its /etc/udhcpc/default.script
06:49<kikinovak>I don't have the slightest idea how to influence that ? Until now, it always worked out of the box
06:50<mjt>it is usually a very bad idea to overwrite hostname based on dhcp
06:50<mjt>that's why it does not work
06:50<kikinovak>so what do you suggest ? just define a "static" hostname (without the fqdn part) in /etc/hostname, so that the machine "knows itself" ?
06:51<mjt>yes

21:04<josephseraos>By default Debian comes with a Python interpreter. On Squeeze, it's 2.6 version, but there's a 3.1 version too. When using 2.6 I can use gtk for GUI, but when I use 3.1, it doesn't work. What can I do for it works? Thanks
