04:29<kikinovak>Hi. I'm running Debian Squeeze (stable). The backports repo is enabled in /etc/apt/sources.list. I'm experimenting with /etc/apt/preferences to get the following behaviour : install some defined packages (say, package1, package2 and package3 always from Backports) and all other packages from Stable repos. I can't seem to find the right syntax.
04:30-!-mode/#debian [+l 467] by debhelper
04:30<kikinovak>... thus, when I do 'aptitude install package0 package 1 package2 package3 package4', it results automagically in package0 and package4 being installed from stable repos, and package1, package2 and package3 being drawn from backports.
04:30<kikinovak>Any way to achieve that?
04:30<kikinovak>And yes, I've read man apt_preferences, but I'm still not able to do it.

17:02<sney>apt-get and aptitude were both debian tools first
17:02<qaz2012>newbieumbreon: yes
17:02<demoniccow>is it ok for me to remove the metapackage gnome-desktop-environment? Will it break gnome 2?
17:02-!-multimi [~multimi@p4FD3C217.dip.t-dialin.net] has joined #debian
17:02<sney>demoniccow: metapackages have no software in them. the only way removing a metapackage will break anything is if other things are removed along with it
17:02<newbieumbreon>ok... uhmmm then exactly what's the difference?
17:02<scientes>demoniccow, you can safely remove the metapackage
17:02<demoniccow>sney, thanks
17:03<sney>aptitude has smarter dependency resolution, but it's not quite as fast, and sometimes it is too "smart" especially with big things like branch upgrades
17:03<qaz2012>ubuntu was created to simplify debian installation and give grafical tools
17:03<newbieumbreon>I don't need them I mean I love my terminal

17:06<qaz2012>heheh
17:07<sney>ati does not really want to support linux, they never have, the fglrx driver was just a small project for unix workstations
17:07<qaz2012>reinstalled my debian box
17:07<sney>they only do it because there's barely enough demand. they've been contributing to 'radeon' though so eventually fglrx will be unnecessary. that day has not arrived.

17:08<chealer>demoniccow: as I said, the gnome package is a metapackage. it provides GNOME when you install it, but does not *contain* the GNOME desktop environment. In other words, when Synaptic tells you it needs to remove "gnome" (the package), that doesn't mean it will remove GNOME (the desktop environment).
