03:07<gdb>Jimi33: Every package in contrib depends on packages in non-free. That's what contrib is for. contrib contains software that is DSFG free, but that depends on non-free software to work. Anyway, it's nothing to worry about yet.

03:08<Jimi33>are there other repositories I sohould try?
03:08<Jimi33>cool ones?
03:09<gdb>That's probably outside the scope of this channel. Regardless, it's going to be difficult to find software for etch as that release has been unsupported for over 2 years.
03:10<gdb>It was released on April 8, 2007, and EOL on February 15, 2010.

07:59<themill>!nodm
07:59<dpkg>Debian does not use a specific runlevel for graphical display managers by default. Just remove the DM package(s) with "aptitude remove xdm kdm wdm login.app gdm gdm3 pdm slim". "echo false >/etc/X11/default-display-manager" will also disable the DM, or just hit ctrl-alt-fN to get to a console. nodm is the name of a minimal/automatic display manager (http://www.enricozini.org/sw/nodm/).
07:59<rgms>Hi. Is there a way to disable the "patch notes" like this: http://pastebin.com/ktj1ufWK from showing up?
08:00<ansgar>rgms: Uninstall apt-listchanges.
08:00<themill>rgms: that's a NEWS item rather than a changelog item -- you usually want to read NEWS items and they are not that frequent. You might want to "dpkg-reconfigure apt-listchanges" (or even uninstall that package) to disable that feature.

08:01<themill>liveOs: startx is not related to gdm
08:01<rgms>alright
08:01<|Ferderik>display manager != startx
08:01<rgms>I just think I've never gained anything from them and they pop up and pause my upgrades
08:01<liveOs>yes, but the startx will lunch the default WM right?

08:03<liveOs>themill, what you mean?
08:04<jm_>startx uses whichever it finds first - ~/.xsession, x-wsession-manager, x-window-manager, x-terminal-emulator
08:04<themill>liveOs: gdm is only a screen where you type your username and password.
08:04<jm_>without typos ...
08:04<|Ferderik>http://wiki.debian.org/Xinitrc
08:05<liveOs>themill, i know the diffrence between display manager and windows manager and xserver, i just want to disable the graphical boot at startup, not gdm
08:05<liveOs>ok
08:05<|Ferderik>well, then this is valid: ""echo false >/etc/X11/default-display-manager" will also disable the DM
08:05<themill>liveOs: what do you mean by "graphical boot at startup" that is not "gdm"
08:06<|Ferderik>he wants to be able to run gdm by hand, not have it started automatically
08:06<themill>|Ferderik: then why is he talking about startx?

14:42<GetsEclectic>anyone good with gptsync? having some problems that i thought were related to my bios boot partition confusing it but i upgraded to 14.2 and it's still giving me 'analysis inconclusive'
14:42<Jimi33>anyone know a way around the whole "cant downlowd it if you didnt upload it"?
14:44<GetsEclectic>maybe i'll try changing the type on the bios boot and then running gptsync

16:24<scientes>quasisane, umm, just use wireshark which sets your ethernet device into promiscuous mode
16:25<scientes>then forging mac addresses is a pain, so you basically have to replace the switch with a hub AFAIK if you are not the bottleneck

16:44<jthomas_>I have a Python GUI app running; due to CPU use the GUI has become all white and displays no info, even if I put that process in the background (with 'jobs'). Is there a way to force-refresh that GUI so i can see what it is currently doing (or paused with jobs) ?

21:13<chealer>scientes: what do you mean by staying in git? does git diff differently from diffutils?
21:13<scientes>chealer, well if you export a diff then that diff might be ugly and verbose, but if you do a git pull, git is very efficient

21:14<chealer>scientes: I am not trying to export differences. I just want to visualize differences.

23:51<Alison_Chaiken>I ran debsums. Nothing terribly suspicious. binutils had bad md5sum and has /bin/ls and /bin/rm though.
23:53<Alison_Chaiken>A bash macro I have in .bashrc works for my user account. So something funny is going on with bash.
23:54<Alison_Chaiken>I didn't change .bashrc though.
23:54<Alison_Chaiken>I bet that by coincidence I removed /bin/rm and /bin/ls in a fit of stupidity, as I was sudo rm'ing some stuff at the time.
23:55<Alison_Chaiken>And then when the 3rd file (/bin/cd I assumed) was missing, I got *really* worried.
