02:41<scientes>mpthompson, ^
02:41<mpthompson>OK, two different opinions? Seems exim4 should just have a simple configuration for this. I thought I would setup the central server as a smarthost and the other servers relaying their mail to the smarthost. Alas, it doesn't work.

02:43<mpthompson>"SSMTP is a program to deliver an email from a local computer to a configured mailhost (mailhub). It is not a mail server (like feature-rich mail server sendmail) and does not receive mail, expand aliases or manage a queue. One of its primary uses is for forwarding automated email (like system alerts) off your machine and to an external email address." OK, that does sound like what I need.

10:44<dpkg>If you have a question, just ask! For example: "I have a problem with ___; I'm running Debian version ___. When I try to do ___ I get the following output ___. I expected it to do ___." Don't ask if you can ask, if anyone uses it, or pick one person to ask. We're all volunteers; make it easy for us to help you. If you don't get an answer try a few hours later or on debian-user@lists.debian.org. See <smart questions><errors>.

18:53<scientes>i dont know what debian doesn't use it by default
18:53<kop>scientes: Ah that stuff. I think that's filesystem dependent.
18:53<scientes>yes, but debian compiles in support for all filesystems that suport it
18:54<scientes>and that is why i suggested a package that manages whether to use suid or capabilities/xattr
18:54<scientes>*fcaps
18:54<kop>scientes: Perhaps it's not enabled because there's various alternatives, ACLs, selinux, and the dust has not settled?
18:54<scientes>no, not at all
18:55<scientes>selinux does not overlap at all
18:55<kop>scientes: Ok. Guess I've not paid attention.
18:55<scientes>capabilities is designed to avoid a super-root, and instead split root up into many parts
18:55<kop>scientes: That's what selinux is supposed to do.
18:55<scientes>and root has all capabilities
18:55<scientes>capabilities only grants things that are not allowed for users by default
18:56<scientes>while selinux takes away both root and user permissions, on a very fine-grained basis

18:56<kop>scientes: Sure, but the goal, as you described, is the same. Elimnate root, lock down everybody else to only necessary permissions.
18:57<scientes>capabilities is supported by ALL kernels, although i believe file support is toggleable (and certainly a mount option)
18:57<scientes>kop, capabilities is far simpler and less fine-grained
18:57<scientes>and capabilities is how the kernel actually handles this stuff, its not a add-on in any way
18:57<kop>scientes: You know about <upg>? I'm wondering if that would fit the bill with sgid. (upg is even simpler. :-)
18:58<scientes>i'm talking about various unix utilties

19:03<scientes>since any proper suid program generally has a selinux rule (or should)

19:04<scientes>but ping certainly is an example where it makes alot of sense
