04:42<willemb>Hi. Do I have to take any specific precautions when installing debian squeeze to SSD?
04:42<willemb>I see my hosting provider lets me choose between 120G SSD and 3TB SATA. The ssd is cheaper and I don't need all that space
04:42<willemb>I have read about specific mount flags that should be enabled
04:43<willemb>and would it be a bad idea to software raid across ssd's?
04:45-!-bfly_ is now known as bfly
04:46<jm_>several factors to consider - do you want to reduce amount of writes to it? which fs? will you use online discard?
04:47<willemb>jm_: I was gonna use ext4. Not sure what online discard is, will read now.

04:49<jm_>willemb: it means it will use TRIM commands when needed (as opposed to offline mode, where one needs to do it with fs umounted using a tool like wiper.sh)
04:49<willemb>jm_: is online discard something different from TRIM ?
04:49<willemb>snap
04:50<jm_>willemb: no, but see above - another thing to consider is if it can do TRIM when using software raid, I think this is not done yet
04:51<willemb>so I have to decide to not back my filesystem with raid, or use the slower sata disks, then
04:51<willemb>or use hardware raid with ssd, any idea where that is at these days?

05:28<rgms>is it like better at resolving dependancies or something?
05:29<devil>rgms: it does not offer choices. it tells me what it will do.

05:30<devil>at least that is my impression
05:30<rgms>alright
05:31<rgms>thanks for the advice
05:31<babilen>rgms: Both have their place -- I typically use apt-get unless I need aptitude's interactive resolver or search features ("/msg dpkg aptitude search")

05:32<devil>and babilen is, as usual very balanced :)
05:33<babilen>heh :)

08:36<thurr>Running Debian testing. eth0 is wired conn. to a router, eth1 is wireless conn. to another router. eth1 provides Internet access. Whenever I'm connected to eth0, I can't do any DNS lookups, although I can still connect to sites and what-not. /etc/resolv.conf has my usual DNS entries still (4.2.2.1 & 4.2.2.2). 20:40<voodooHex>nevyn anything that is in ring-0 like kernel blobs can be is about as bad as it gets. Not all devices are that bad. There was a time back in the days of 486 computers I would flash my eeproms with 100% FOSS stuff. Sadly things are way to complicate to do that now though =/
20:41<nevyn>firmware blobs do not run in ring-0
20:42<nevyn>they don't even run on the system cpu
20:42<nevyn>voodooHex: but the contents of the eeproms was still a blob

20:48<voodooHex>yeah both of them is how I wish everything was when it came to hw.

22:22<hdon>hi all :) does 6.0.4 automatically apt-get update && apt-get upgrade?
22:22<hdon>i just ran these commands after being away for two months, and there were no upgrades
22:22<hdon>that seems odd so i thought i'd check in
22:24<abrotman>paste your sources.list in a pasgtebin
22:24<sney>hdon, I think the apt frontend in gnome might have an automatic updates function, but you'd probably have to enable it
22:24<hdon>sney: i don't have any desktop environment installed
22:24<sney>ok, then do what abrotman said
22:25<abrotman>yeah .. do what i say!
22:25<abrotman>:)
22:25<sney>squeeze is a stable release so it doesn't get many updates, but there should have at least been a couple after 2 months
22:25<hdon>nothing surprising but:
22:25<hdon>deb http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian squeeze main
22:25<hdon>deb http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian squeeze non-free
22:25<hdon>.
22:25<hdon>there ya go
22:25<hdon>sorry i don't mean to seem ungrateful for community support

22:27<abrotman>hdon: and you did your aptitude update;aptitude safe-upgrade .. and no packages were held back ?
22:27<hdon>i used apt-get :|
22:27*hdon uses aptitude
22:28<hdon>abrotman: 0
22:28<hdon>i suppose it's possible i've updated more recently than i thought
22:28<abrotman>hdon: it's possible if it's a minimal system
22:28<hdon>hmm, yeah, it's pretty minimal

22:39<dvs>good suggestion

22:40<craigevil>hdon, basically you need 3 lines main contrib non-free, security, squeeze-updates
