00:45<alephnull>Hello, what's the best of adding an insmod lvm into grub.cfg ?
00:47<pparadis>alephnull: that doesn't belong in grub.cfg
00:47<pparadis>if you want to insmod something arbitrarily on boot, i would suggest tossing the relevant command into /etc/rc.local

00:48<pparadis>alephnull: wait a second, i think i see what you're asking.
00:50-!-mode/#debian [+l 480] by debhelper
00:50<alephnull>I confess that I don't really see the point of the scripts in /etc/grub.d
00:52<bones_was_here>the proper way to load extra modules at boot is via /etc/modules or /etc/modprobe.d/
00:52-!-amphi [~amphi@59.95.13.196] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
00:52<alephnull>bones_was_here: It's not a kernel module. It's a grub2 module.
00:53-!-aranax [~aranax@190.148.42.231] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
00:53<pparadis>bones_was_here: right, but i think his issue is that he can't boot at all without grub knowing that his stuff is in LVM.
00:53-!-NightMonkey [~NightrMon@nightmonkey.user.oftc.net] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
00:53-!-hele [~hele@212-149-220-113.bb.dnainternet.fi] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
00:53<alephnull>Got it in one, pparadis
00:53<bones_was_here>thats strange, cos debian's grub2 figures that out by itself and adds it if needed (same for the raid support and other features)
00:54<alephnull>Well, two, tbh.
00:54<bones_was_here>the insmod command is used for loading modules into the kernel, so i figured that's what was wanted
00:54<pparadis>bones_was_here: yeah, it should, but i've had it go wrong before.
00:54<alephnull>bones_was_here: There's no evidence of lvm probing in the scripts in /etc/grub.d grub 1.99.
00:54-!-markvandenborre [~mark@li19-195.members.linode.com] has joined #debian
00:55<pparadis>i hit this result after some googling --> http://jim.studt.net/depository/index.php/debian-lenny-and-grub-with-boot-in-lvm
00:55<bones_was_here>why would lvm look at the grub config? it's up to grub to notice the kernel is located in an lvm
00:55<bones_was_here>lvm isn't aware of bootloaders
00:56<pparadis>right, i'm saying as i understand it the problem is the other way around
00:57<bones_was_here>if your kernel is on an lvm, you should find the lvm module already in /boot/grub/grub.cfg
00:57<bones_was_here>if you recently moved it onto an lvm, you probably need to run update-grub

00:58<pparadis>update-grub not having been run would certainly explain the issue.

01:01<pparadis>o_O
01:01<bones_was_here>whenever grub or a kernel is updated or installed, your changes to grub.cfg are lost...
01:02<pparadis>bones_was_here: and yes, you're totally right of course on the proper way to load modules, but i do still just toss an insmod into rc.local every now and then while i'm working on something ;)

01:08<FuckJustin`Bieber>Justin Bieber is a faggot
01:08<bones_was_here>alephnull: i have quite a range of machines booting from lvm+raid with no manual changes to the grub configs, so i doubt you've hit a bug and can probably help find what's wrong if you care to post some more info
01:08<corey>so much rage.
01:09<pparadis>FuckJustin`Bieber: please take your observations elsewhere. honestly, it's tiresome.
01:09<alephnull>bones_was_here: Do you keep your /boot inside the LVM ?
01:10<bones_was_here>alephnull: yes
01:10<bones_was_here>otherwise it wouldnt be on the raid
01:10<alephnull>bones_was_here: OK. I see no code that queries lvm state and puts in the insmod lvm into grub.cfg. The complication is that I'm using grub-efi
01:11<bones_was_here>hmmm i'm pretty sure all my boxes are on grub-pc

01:13<corey>hey guys
01:14<bones_was_here>alephnull: i'm not sure exactly where the check for the kernel location is done, but the grub.cfg file is built using the scripts in /etc/grub.d
01:14<corey>i'm trying to partition a drive and it wont let me. i get "the device is busy"
01:14<corey>but it doesn't seem to be mounted.
01:14<bones_was_here>alephnull: in 00_header you can see it checks a variable and then adds insmod <module> if it needs raid or lvm
01:14<pparadis>corey: lsof is your friend
01:14<aussa>hi, when is wheezy going out?
01:15<pparadis>corey: specifically, "lsof | grep [blah]"
01:15<pparadis>aussa: you tell me.
01:15<corey>blah?
01:15<alephnull>bones_was_here: I know. That's what I was talking about when I said that that code doesn't exist on efi.
01:15<pparadis>well, blah might be a mountpoint.
01:15<bones_was_here>ah ok thats kinda sucky :/
01:16<bones_was_here>(i have no idea where it gets ${GRUB_PRELOAD_MODULES} from)
01:16<bones_was_here>but i would have expected that stuff to be part of grub-common, not grub-pc

07:47<RalfJ>I could try a hardlink, hoping network manager just writes into the file instead of re-creating it
07:47<RalfJ>yes
07:48<RalfJ>I guess symlinksdont work because it will be read from within the chroot?
07:48<themill>yeah
07:48<themill>hardlink might work. I use pdnsd on my laptop to get around this and also act as a dns cache.
07:49<RalfJ>Id rather avoid deamons I rarely need
07:49<themill>(pdnsd listens on 127.0.0.1:53 and either returns a cache hit or talks to the dns server that you would otherwise have used)
07:49<RalfJ>before I do this Ill change my "enter chroot" script (which creates the bind mounts) to copy the resolv.conf file
07:49<themill>schroot can do this for you
07:49<RalfJ>never heard of that, Ill look into it
07:50<themill>/etc/schroot/desktop/copyfiles contains /etc/resolv.conf (amongst other things0

19:04<retrospectacus>!resolvconf
19:04<dpkg>methinks resolvconf is a package that can be used to manage your /etc/resolv.conf (the file that contains your DNS settings). Many packages including ppp, ifupdown, dhcp-client, pump, pdnsd, dnsmasq, ... are compatible with resolvconf, making it easier to manage your DNS settings. Ask me about <fixresolvconf>. See also <resolv.conf>.
