00:52<scientes>grubpains, please do not do it
00:52<scientes>logging into gui as root is incredibly idiotic
00:52<grubpains>after installing os-prober through root, I can't execute the command in my normal user account, complaining I don't have permission, even when I sudo the command
00:52<pparadis>indeed, it's set up to prevent that by default for good reason..
00:53<scientes>android phones don't even have a user-accessable root
00:53-!-jabowery [~quassel@67-3-130-150.omah.qwest.net] has joined #debian
00:53<scientes>grubpains, just run it in a terminal, with gksu
00:53<pparadis>grubpains: try doing "su - root" to get a root shell.
00:53<scientes>gksu os-prober
00:53<scientes>will work just fine
00:53<pparadis>yepper
00:53<scientes>don't EVER log in as root
00:53-!-chitchat [~guest@120.22.230.155] has joined #debian
00:54<pparadis>wait, what?
00:54<scientes>like as a gui
00:54<pparadis>ah right :)
00:54<scientes>sry for not being clear
00:54<pparadis><3

00:55<scientes>grubpains, if you ever think you need a root gui session, you are mistaken
00:55<pparadis>scientes: on the android phone bit, you can do "sudo -i" and set a root password, no?
00:55<scientes>pparadis, no
00:55<scientes>pparadis, you have to hack the phone to get root
00:55<scientes>its designed that you don't have root at all
00:55<scientes>and every program has its own user, which is quite sensible
00:55<scientes>and runs under that differn't user
00:55-!-fabrianchi [~fabrianch@r186-52-177-219.dialup.adsl.anteldata.net.uy] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
00:56<scientes>they communicate with each other through binder, which is a very good IPC
00:56<scientes>which is now in mainline
00:56<pparadis>heh, i don't even have an android phone, 'tis why i asked... although i did frame that assuming that you would have cracked the phone first, and was wondering if most methods set a root password and make it accessible or if you need to do something else afterward.
00:56-!-adubkov [~adubkov@213.208.188.134] has quit []
00:56<scientes>other things about android suck
00:56<scientes>but yeah they are shipped without an accessable root account
00:56<pparadis>nod
00:57<scientes>but applications, which you can install from anywhere, including untrusted sources, can run native code (in untrusted user-mode)
00:58<scientes>in that way, it is an even playing field performance-wise, unlike, lets say, windows phones
00:58<pparadis>maybe at some point i'll get an android device of some sort just to throw debian on it and play with it.
00:58<scientes>where only microsoft can ship native code
00:58<scientes>meh, android is hell
00:58<scientes>its not even self-hosting

03:10<buffoon_work>Hi! I have a squid server on on of our clients but I get a lot of "time wait bucket table overflow" in syslog and sooner or later the server crashes. I increased the RAM on the ESX Host for that machine but the problem still exists and performance data on the Host says that RAM is used only up to 30%. What would you suggest to do?

03:21<pparadis>i'd really recommend researching all the settings as they pertain to the specific error message you're seeing. offhand though, i'd also pay attention to any values related to reusing buckets.
03:22<pparadis>this is not the sort of thing that can typically be solved off the cuff by someone else. it needs to be specific to your setup, and you'll want to carefully test any modifications you make.

03:31<buffoon_work>jm_, do you really think that is related to vmware? That's the only virtual machine on that cluster that has this problem. Other Servers that produce even more load are running fine. I really think that winbind+squid3 opens a lot of connections and there's set some sort of limit
03:32<pparadis>vadim: for starters, what version of debian are you running, what software are you using on it, what error messages are you seeing, exactly how is it "not working?"

05:06<themill>qboster: are you making a mirror or a private repo? A mirror you'd make with ftpsync or debmirror and doesn't need a Packages file to be created for it; your own repo wouldn't have more than one version of the packages in it if you didn't want them there.

05:49<sml>howdy folks. a friend's system, debian stable, had a load of 30 or so and they found that /var/ was full. apparently there was a massive file in /var/tmp which dissappeard after 'sort' was killed (process was eating lots of CPU'. does anyone here know what could've been running sort on a standard box (i thought maybe updatedb or some-such may use it) and also what '?'s for the perms of a file mean?

10:21<dpkg>Ubuntu is based on Debian, but it is not Debian. Only Debian is supported on #debian. Use #ubuntu (irc.freenode.net) instead. Even if the channel happens to be less helpful, support for distributions other than Debian is offtopic on #debian. See also <based on debian> and <ubuntuirc>.

17:35<retrospectacus>tispacco: you can run this in a terminal to erase (backup) your chromium configs: cd .config && mv chromium chromium-backup
