00:59<Newbumz>So most of my IT overlords feel that all forms of Linux are dead. And in the past year or so I have had trouble coming up with arguments as to the opposite. I want to maintain our BIND server and internal webhost on this platform but am running out of excuses not to virtualize on windows 2008.
01:03<Newbumz>I am a bit drunk so I guess more then anything I probably am looking for jargon rather than the technical. I can sort that out later.
01:05<bones_was_here>if you're working for windows zealots, there's probably two options: put up with it because you're paid to, or work somewhere else

01:08<bones_was_here>well if they're using an entirely microsoft setup except for your bind and webserver, then you would naturally have a hard time making a case, especially if they also have lots of windows admins who only know point & click or cmd.exe
01:10<bones_was_here>microsoft put a hell of a lot of money into integrating the common components of networks and putting a nice gui in front of that

01:18<bones_was_here>your company is probably not large enough or innovative enough to 'need' to use free software - unless you're google, amazon, facebook, etc - you can just buy the shrink wrapped product and call it close enough
01:19<bones_was_here>but obviously google would be hammering square pegs into round holes if they tried to base their products on MS AD :P

01:23<Newbumz>Change as always is happening within this organization and I wish for many of our systems to remain legacy because they do not fail as much as their windows counterparts.

02:10<kenifanying>Hi all, I am running debian squeeze. I want to connect to a wifi router that protected by wpa/wpa2 psk ,but it's passward only has five characters. I know it's strange because it seems that wpa/wpa2 psk require at least 8 characters but I have no rights to change the wifi router in my lab. I try to connect it via Network-Manager, but when I enter the passward, I can't click the "connect" button under Network-Manager . I have tried to stop Network-Ma

Sorry , I am not good at writing

02:46<grepper>I just switched from unstable 32-bit to squeeze amd64, and no longer have working sensors. sensors-detect doesn't find any. I was using core-temp and it87 with "force_id=0x8721" in the 32 bit install (same machine) neither of which work now. Any ideas ?
02:47<hellfire>well that sucks, what have you tried so far?
02:48<hellfire>i would suggest purging the current package and reinstalling the x64 version

02:52<grepper>jm, no, but 2.6 series kernels worked fine in past with 32-bit. Used 3.1 I think on 32-bit, 2.6.32-5-amd64 now
02:53<grepper>considered upgrading to 3.x kernel, but didn't make sense as 2.6.32 ish worked fine on 32-bit
02:53<jm_>grepper: check what kernel says when you load the modules -- you can find 3.2 on backports

10:36<dpkg>Ubuntu is based on Debian, but it is not Debian. Only Debian is supported on #debian. Use #ubuntu (irc.freenode.net) instead. Even if the channel happens to be less helpful, support for distributions other than Debian is offtopic on #debian. See also <based on debian> and <ubuntuirc>.

15:48<DennisTheTiger>I am attempting to netinst squeeze onto an old IBM Eserver (i386 build), but every time I attempt to install, it freezes. Symptom I have is this - during attempt to install libc6 from the disc, the system starts throwing what appears to be SMART errors - which is weird, since it's from sr0 (the optical drive). I've tried different media and different drives to no avail - same symptoms. What should I try next, short of defenestrating this

17:16<Maulkin>!ask
17:16<dpkg>If you have a question, just ask! For example: "I have a problem with ___; I'm running Debian version ___. When I try to do ___ I get the following output ___. I expected it to do ___." Don't ask if you can ask, if anyone uses it, or pick one person to ask. We're all volunteers; make it easy for us to help you. If you don't get an answer try a few hours later or on debian-user@lists.debian.org. See <smart questions><errors>.
17:16<markus_>I have a problem with my wheezy installation, I think I found a conflict between 2 packages
17:16<Maulkin>Oh?
17:17<markus_>pidgin depends libpurple0, which depends libfarstream-0.1-0
17:17<markus_>this package conflicts with the older version which is a dependency from gnome

17:23<babilen>markus_: You probably don't want to do that -- Cycle through other options, investigate the root problem or merely wait for it to solve itself. (safe-upgrade might be a good idea in the interim)

17:24<markus_>yes, they are replacing each over
17:24<markus_>but I can't install both without uninstalling gnome or pidgin
17:25<markus_>I've used safe-upgrade for some days but I thought it would be a good idea to report this issue

17:27<babilen>It's not really an issue. It is merely that you have to solve this problem yourself. What happens if you install one and remove the other in the same action? 21:46<JWD>after installing, booting without the USB drive gets me a blank screen immediately after the BIOS menu
21:47<JWD>while booting with the USB in gives me a complete working installation
21:48<JWD>during the installation process i made sure to select the harddrive (which was listed as sdb) to install to, and not USB (which was listed as sda at the time)

21:50<mikegrb>grub is likely having things boot from sdb but without the thumbdrive your hard drive is showing up as sda so no sdb to boot from

21:54<JWD>well, i mean "is it possible for me to boot with my installation as it is now without the thumbdrive in?"
21:54<mikegrb>look in /boot/grub/menu.lst or /boot/menu.lst
21:54<mikegrb>something like hdd(1,0) for root device
21:54<mikegrb>would change the first number, drive number to 0
21:54<mikegrb>second is partition
21:55<JWD>there is no menu.lst in either /boot or /boot/grub. i must have botched this up somewhere...
