06:24<babilen>vadimkolchev: That device is well supported and shouldn't behave like that. I would try network-manager as it might be a problem with wicd and you can even install a newer NM version backports. (/msg dpkg bdo) -- If that doesn't help you might want to try a newer kernel -- It could also be that your network configuration is broken and that, for example, the DNS server of your ISP/running on your router is b0rken. You could experiment by setting ...
06:24<babilen>... the DNS server to an open one such as 8.8.8.8 or 4.2.2.4 (cf. http://theos.in/windows-xp/free-fast-public-dns-server-list/)

06:36<babilen>vadimkolchev: network-manager is *not* used during the installation.
06:38<vadimkolchev>babilen: ok, I just told you wrong - during install I couldn't bring up wlan0 and connect, so installed without connection. After I installed I had no internet as well, so I installed wicd. I used ip link set wlan0 up , iwconfig wlan0 essid, and dhcpcd wlan0 and internet never appeared
06:38<babilen>And how did you try to "bring up wlan0" from within network-manager? I am not quite sure if I follow. It sounds as if you tried something like "ifup wlan0" which has nothing to do with network-manager, but assumes that you configured your network in /etc/network/interfaces -- The latter is detailed in /usr/share/doc/wpa_supplicant/README.Debian.gz but I wouldn't necessarily recommend that way.
06:40-!-mode/#debian [+l 504] by debhelper
06:40<babilen>vadimkolchev: That is no wonder -- I am talking about network-manager (as in http://wiki.debian.org/NetworkManager). And it is normal that you cannot associate with an AP if it uses WPA/WEP and you merely try "iwconfig wlan0 essid". It would need your passphrase and also would need to use wpa_supplicant for the connection. WPA encrypted networks are *not* supported by the stable installer (but by "/msg dpkg kmuto")

11:11<themill>vadimkolchev: the firmware-iwlwifi package contains the microcode you want. From what you said earlier, you've disabled WPA etc on your wifi already so that you can do this, right?
11:11<rigved>themill: you can download it from here: http://packages.debian.org/search?keywords=firmware-iwlwifi. make sure that you download the correct version.
11:12<themill>vadimkolchev: ^^
11:12<vadimkolchev>rigved: themill: yes, there is no encryption at all, and I want wi-fi during installation, but it is not there. I install from usb stick how can I add this package?
11:13<vadimkolchev>also it says it needs .ucode file, and not debian package

11:16<rigved>vadimkolchev: load a FAT32 formated usb stick. in the root of the usb stick, put the firmware-iwlwifi.deb file. the installer will automatically install the .ucode file from this package.
11:17<rigved>ah. same as what themill said ^^

14:02<pparadis>mazze: the original issue sounds more like the system was shutting down due to excessive heat.

14:03<mazze>pparadis I thought about that, but the machine ran stable for years, and the fans were working. Actually, when the power supply shut down, I was no longer able to switch the box back on.
14:04<vadim>pparadis: sure, I did that, but the kernel files under /boot remained, as well as grub entries
14:04<mazze>pparadis I needed to plug off the power cable and try to switch off and on, and then the box came back to life. Sometimes it stopped again after only 20 minutes, with one disk less now it runs for 2 days already ...
14:05<mazze>mazze finally, I am thinking that the mainboard/chipset could have some problem when accessing the disks, as the "crash" nearly always occured, when there was heavy NFS-traffic to the box ...
