00:49<diego>hi, I have a bizaree issue

00:49<diego>if I do ping myhost, it cannot resolve
00:49<diego>(I dont care if it does not respond pings, but it should resolv)
00:50-!-gnugr [~vangelis@79.167.118.155] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
00:52<diego>any help please?
00:52<pparadis>!anyone
00:52<dpkg>Please do not ask if anyone can help you, knows 'something' or uses 'some_program'. Instead, ask your real question. (If the real question _was_ "does anyone use 'some_program'?" ask me about <popcon> instead.) See <ask> <ask to ask> <polls> <search> <sicco> <smart questions>.
00:52<diego>haha, ok, I will repeat it
00:52<pparadis>diego: that said, let's start with this
00:53<pparadis>what version of debian are you using?
00:53<diego>dig myhost - gives the IP , ping IP - cannot resolve ---- whyyyyy ?
00:53<diego>testing
00:53<pparadis>okay, are you asking about a server (that's what i guess)
00:53<diego>ping IP works perfectly
00:53<diego>so, why dig resolves and ping doesnt
00:53<diego>ping should resolve
00:53<diego>and, it is just with some internal hosts
00:54<pparadis>diego: what is the fully qualified domain name in question, and what is the IP it should resolve to?
00:54<diego>it is some internal host in my network
00:54<diego>host.mycompany.com
00:54<diego>it is not public
00:54<pparadis>dig is a utility that consults a DNS server for DNS records. if you don't have any records in DNS, you won't get any results.
00:55<diego>I get the results from dig
00:55<diego>that is the annoying part
00:55<diego>dig host.mycompany.com gives me the correct IP I want
00:55<diego>ping host.mycompany.com says "cannot resolve host"
00:55<diego>"unknown host host.mycompany.com"
00:55<pparadis>please stop using mycompany.com
00:55<diego>:)
00:55<diego>ok
00:56-!-tazz [~gaurav@triband-mum-120.60.128.124.mtnl.net.in] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
00:56<pparadis>if you have a domain, i presume it's actualyl available on the public internet.
00:56<diego>ok, the domain is not public
00:56<diego>you cannot access it outside my firewall
00:56<pparadis>please provide actual output of what you're doing and what you're seeing here --> http://paste.debian.net
00:56-!-Linda [~boss@218.248.24.19] has joined #debian
00:57<diego>dig host gives X.Y.Z.W in A record, but ping host does not know the host
00:57<pparadis>00:56 < pparadis> please provide actual output of what you're doing and what you're seeing here --> http://paste.debian.net

00:57<pparadis>diego: if you're not willing to provide that, unfiltered (and filtering is not security, btw), i'm not willing to attempt to help you.
00:58<diego>I can provide it, its another computer
00:58-!-uNIXplumber [~uNIXplumb@85.214.37.176] has left #debian [Stop ACTA and Stop Canonical's Unity ^^]
00:59<pparadis>diego: btw, the short answer here is that whatever computer you're using to ping the target is using a DNS resolver that doesn't know anything about what you're asking for.
01:00-!-toabctl [~toabctl@brln-4dbc24d2.pool.mediaWays.net] has joined #debian
01:00<pparadis>diego: given that this is an internal setup, you either need to (1) use an internal resolver that known about what you're asking about, or (2) use your local hosts file to assign manual entries mapping the FQDN in question to its IP address.
01:00<pparadis>s/known about/knows about/
01:00<diego>but my resolv.conf
01:00<diego>list dns servers that know that server
01:01<diego>I dig with each of those, they all know it
01:01<pparadis>apparently ping is using something else entirely then to do host resolution. what kind of setup do you have?
01:02<diego>its my company internal network , Im not too sure
01:02<diego>Im not actually in the IT department
01:02-!-calisto [~calisto@r186-50-164-93.dialup.adsl.anteldata.net.uy] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
01:02<diego>(Im a developer, I dont handle the dns)
01:02<pparadis>diego: given this state of affairs, i recommend you talk to your IT department.
01:03<diego>I could trust you more ;)
01:03-!-craigevil [~craig@72.188.99.79] has quit [Quit: Leaving]
01:03<pparadis>just off the cuff, it might help a bit if i saw the actual commands you're issuing to dig and ping the target.

01:04<pparadis>in other words, when asking for help, you really need to provide every shred of information you've already got/.
01:04<pparadis>otherwise, people will have a hard time helpin g you.
01:04<diego>yeah, I need to copy them, but it was basically dig host @dns for each dns in /etc/resolv.conf works
01:04<pparadis>(yes, i'm typing too quickly, sorry about the typos. it's also been a 20 hour day so far.)
01:05<diego>I will connect later again, thanks :)

07:04<jez>well, my Debian install has stuff like S14networking in there which sets up networking. Wouldn't that be inappropriate if the machine were being booted into, say, runlevel 2 (which is meant to be without networking)?

07:12<Apollo>I think you don't understand the blogpost :)
07:12<Apollo>he wants people to move their startup scripts out of rcS.d, since they will *always* run, independant of the runlevel chosen
07:12<Apollo>he wants them to move them to the rcX.d folders

13:00<jthomas>SynrG not share; I need a way to restart my USB subsystem of some sort. I get to a point where new USB devices aren't recognized unless I reboot and a reboot seems like overkill

13:02<jthomas>ah, i thought you wanted me to share info with you.
13:02<jthomas>yes, debian's vbox
13:02<SynrG>do both the host and the guest want access to the device at once?
13:03<SynrG>i don't think USB is designed to work like that and i wouldn't guarantee the USB devices would behave well
13:03<jthomas>no, just the guest (Win7)
13:04<SynrG>i have used upstream's 4.1 package just fine with USB devices of various kinds under sid (printer, scanner, bookreader)
13:04<SynrG>i can't speak for the debian package. but of course you know upstream's package is not supported here while debian's is.

13:05<SynrG>jthomas: so what is the device that is causing these lockups?
13:05<SynrG>i'm wondering if linux is responding by loading a driver for it (even if it is not used) and this is causing grief when win7 sees the device and wants exclusive access.

14:18<SynrG>jthomas: if linux tries to mount the phone as a mass storage device, or otherwise interact with the device, then if win7 is also trying to access the device, i wouldn't be surprised at all if you had problems. i guess you want to ensure your host system doesn't try to do anything with the device, but lets the vbox win7 system have exclusive access to it in that case.
14:18<SynrG>jthomas: if that's not what's happening, then i'm out of ideas.
14:19<SynrG>jthomas: as i said, #vbox @ freenode may have more idea about how this works than i do

14:38<SynrG>jthomas: i'm not sure what the debian package actually supports in terms of USB. i moved to upstream's package because at the time, USB support was a 'premium' feature not supported in -ose. if you seek help on #vbox they may want you to try their own package, which i would understand if you didn't want to do ... at the very least, you should indicate to them what version you are using, and possibly kernel version# of the host is relevant too.

But If I turn off my bluetooth, it will not work again later when I turn it back on... The bluetooth applet in my gnome panel still shows bluetooth as turned off with the red x even though the bluetooth light on laptop is turned on. I run "/etc/init.d/bluetooth status" and it returns "bluetooth is running" any idea how to get the gui for my

18:17<pparadis>touki: dhcp failing probably has a lot more to do with your ethernet device being properly recognized, and your dhcp server operating properly, than console/graphical install.
18:17<retrospectacus>plugwash: cp /etc/init.d/skeleton /etc/init.d/plugwash and read/edit that - tells you a lot in that file

18:20<Hydroxide>touki: oh, essid - if you're installing over WPA, that support got added in the still-in-development wheezy installer, not supported in stable (squeeze). WPA is supported just fine in squeeze, but not in the installer.
18:20<pparadis>yeah, installing via a wired connection and then configuring wireless should work fine.
18:20*Hydroxide nods
18:21<wamty>do distros package the firmwares separately from teh kernel? so that if i don't need those firmware i can just uninstall them?
18:21<Hydroxide>you might also need to provide firmware for the wireless card, depending on the situation
18:21<Hydroxide>wamty: Debian does. lots of distros don't.
18:21<pparadis>and it might be in non-free, depending on the firmware.
18:21<wamty>why not make firmware-linux a separate project, why include it in the main tree?
18:21<Hydroxide>we don't control upstream :)
18:21<touki>Hydroxide: Yeah, I used WPA, but I Changed it for no security during the installation. So I don't get the problem.
18:22<touki>So yeah, yours advices are wired connection ?
18:22<pparadis>that's how i'd do it.
18:22<retrospectacus>touki: that, or provide firmware for your wifi card to the installer
18:22<retrospectacus>!tell touki about installer firmware
18:23<retrospectacus>but using ethernet is by far easiest
