00:00<sney>I've seen that one before. what video hardware?
00:00<sney>and what wm/de
00:00<thomasbwang>and for a while until i kill reboot the system, i mean reset
00:00<thomasbwang>my graphics card is ....let me check
00:00<goutam>how to update
00:01-!-devil_ [~devil@dslb-088-072-204-226.pools.arcor-ip.net] has joined #debian
00:01<goutam>yes
00:01<thomasbwang>the graphic card on my system is Nvidia GT 240, from ASUS
00:01*jparkton guesses Nvidia
00:02<jparkton>+1
00:02<thomasbwang>wow
00:02-!-goutam [~goutamdha@115.187.48.236] has quit []
00:02<sney>hmm, last time I saw it was with ati on the free driver
00:02<thomasbwang>i am using 295
00:02<thomasbwang>driver
00:02<sney>from the debian packages?
00:02<thomasbwang>from non-free rep
00:03<thomasbwang>yes
00:03<sney>are you using a compositing window manager? this includes gnome3 and kde with their default settings
00:03<brando753>yea I have same problem with ati on free driver :(
00:03<thomasbwang>right now i have to go to openbox instead
00:04<thomasbwang>yes, i use gnome 3 shell
00:04<sney>it usually seems to be related to using glx for windowing
00:04<sney>so when you use openbox, the problem goes away?
00:04<thomasbwang>that's correct!
00:04<sney>interesting
00:04-!-devil [~devil@dslb-088-072-238-196.pools.arcor-ip.net] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
00:04<thomasbwang>ya
00:06<sney>Unfortunately I've never seen a solution other than "don't use compositing" which is just a workaround
00:06<sney>and since it happens on multiple types of video hardware... hrm
00:06<thomasbwang>and another interesting one is, once i log into GNOME classic and then log out, it seems better when i use GNOME Shell again
00:06<thomasbwang>i mean it give me longer time of GOOD
00:07-!-kevinbenko [~kvirc@misterfluffy.dsl.xmission.com] has joined #debian
00:07<sney>well, it's worthy of a bug report
00:07<sney>I'm just trying to think of what you should file it against
00:08<sney>if you have some extra disk space, feel like installing kde4 and seeing if it happens there as well?
00:08<thomasbwang>yes, i googled, and found the similar bugs seems reported already, and marked as 'sovled'
00:09<thomasbwang>oh. that's long long ago for my last time KDE touching
00:09<thomasbwang>thanks sney anyway!
00:10<sney>np
00:10<sney>I'm kind of worried about this though, it doesn't seem to go away, it just moves around
00:10<thomasbwang>to mine?
00:12-!-noahfx [~noahfx@190.148.108.234] has quit [Quit: Lost terminal]
00:12<sney>yeah. I had it, then it was "fixed," then it's repeated on other people's systems, now yours... there's still something fishy going on here.

00:13<sney>intermittent and difficult-to-reproduce bugs are the worst, especially when they take your desktop away

01:01<sney>converting video from one codec to another usually just involves some tool scripted to decompress then recode the file
01:01<craigevil>coreyb, winff
01:02<sney>I think both these things can be done with mencoder, which is a pretty popular option, so is ffmpeg and a bunch of other things
01:02<sney>!debtags
01:02<dpkg>it has been said that debtags is a way of categorising packages with tags (facets) that describe how a package can be used, what data it can read/write, what interfaces it has etc. This adds another dimension to package searching. Install the debtags package, then search either using "debtags" or "aptitude". Search (or add new tags) at http://debtags.debian.net/ . See also http://wiki.debian.org/DebTags or ask me about <aptitude search>.

01:28<sney>I have too limited experience to say for sure but I would lean towards mencoder because I know you can do a lot with it
01:31<coreyb>does it come with a front end?
01:33<brando753>alright I am trying to make a LVM encrypted drive, is there any recommended tools for this? I was thinking of just using partman that comes with debian's installer but there is no easy way to install that
01:35<craigevil>if you are installing debian the installer can do that
01:35<brando753>I know it can but this is on an already installed system, Im adding a backup hardrive that I want encrypted

08:10<tcpa252>Maulkin: more or less i know, tho i'm still interested on how to pull out the latest build of banshee from unstable repository without breaking my system in the process
08:11<Maulkin>tcpa252: You can't easily from unstable, but for testing you could look at a backport, or you could try pinning.
08:11<Maulkin>In either case though, you're kinda on your own.

08:12<tcpa252>?
08:12<tcpa252>any safer
08:13<abrotman>you'd likely have to backport mono too
08:13<Maulkin>tcpa252: not really.
08:13<Maulkin>tcpa252: You could move entirely to testing.
08:14<tcpa252>ah damn..., dont want to break the system in the first install day, so for now i'll stick with stable repository
08:15<abrotman>might already be too late
08:15<abrotman>tcpa252: if you really want a newer banshee, try using wheezy .. it's safer than unstable, nearing freeze .. should be reasonable to use for desktop use
08:15<abrotman>hopefully not too many broken bits

11:20<dpkg>setup.exe is a way of installing Debian Squeeze from Windows using <CD1>, just insert the CD/DVD and let it AutoRun; packages are acquired from this media if available. You can also use it from a USB install. See http://www.debian.org/releases/squeeze/i386/ch05s01#boot-win32 for more details. See also <win32-loader>.

18:12<birch>devil_, http://wiki.debian.org/ATIProprietary is the tutorial i used to install it.

19:16<vook>I'm having some issues on an NIS network. It seems like even though I (think I) have the nsswitch.conf set up correctly (files nis), in the event that an interface goes down, the client is basically completely unresponsive. Login attempts as root hang. My nsswitch.conf is here : http://paste.debian.net/176716/. I also have a few nfs mounts, but those shouldn't affect a root login.
