05:50<babilen>AgentC: Which path do you want to add and how to call said program during bootup? It sounds as if you *really* want to place the program somewhere sensible (e.g. /usr/local) and start it with a suitable init script. (read /etc/init.d/README and base it on /etc/init.d/skeleton) -- Everyhting else is likely to be a horrible hack
05:51<babilen>AgentC: Ah, you merely want to change the PATH setting globally?
05:52<babilen>AgentC: In that case: How would you prevent your user's shells to override this setting? (which they will most likely do)

09:13<SynrG>DomeMaster1: as for people pissing on GNOME, ignore it :) Debian offers a panoply of desktop choices and window managers, each of which has its own following. GNOME is a fine default choice, and we generally assume if you have not otherwise specified which desktop you use, that this is what you're using, since it's the default.

19:43<vook>I'm having what appears to be hardware issues on a server. In memtest86+, all four dimms, tested individually in each dimm slot, had errors. All errors occurred on test 5 (random move), but tests 0-4 didn't show any errors. i didn't proceed past test 5. Does this appear conclusive in any way? (could be motherboard or something else it seems). I also tested with failsafe BIOS settings.

23:24<paco-TestServer>I try hosts
23:24<paco-TestServer>but that is just a loop
23:24<scientes>paco-TestServer, just type in the ip address
23:24<scientes>or use /etc/hosts
23:25<paco-TestServer>sighmas.no-ip.org 192.168.1.128 at file hosts?
23:25<paco-TestServer>but this like 127.0.0.0 localhost
23:25<paco-TestServer>a loop
23:26<paco-TestServer>I want to go out, and the come to my web server from the outside
23:27<paco-TestServer>not a local loop

23:27<paco-TestServer>yes
23:27<paco-TestServer>I want that
23:27<scientes>try installing upnpc
23:28<scientes>i think the package is miniupnpc
23:28<scientes>makes it easy with most routers
23:28<paco-TestServer>miniupnpc?
23:29<paco-TestServer>never heard that, hmmm

23:30<scientes>nah, its a fucking disaster, nat-pmp is way better, but most routers dont support that
23:30<scientes>(natpmp-utils i believe for that)
23:32<paco-TestServer>my router is an old comtrend 536+ that eat the 80 port
23:32<scientes>well then you are screwed, port 80 wise
23:33<paco-TestServer>this comtrend man say 80 is mine going 8080
23:33<scientes>routers are cheap, freedombox is even trying to create a debian one
23:33<paco-TestServer>but i don't know if goes comtrend or my server
23:33<scientes>but try upnpc, it might just work
23:34<scientes>most routers support uPnp
23:34<paco-TestServer>so listen 80 and listen 8080
23:34<paco-TestServer>okey
23:35<paco-TestServer>miniupnpc_1.5-2_i386.deb dowloaded

23:40<birch>Is there any way to encrypt a drive after debian has been installed? I don't have enough spare storage space to move everything off and encrypt the raided drives. I'm guessing the answer is a flat "no".
23:42<scientes>birch, with ecryptfs, yes, and the beauty of ecryptfs is you can encrypt just the home dir and with per-user encryption, so its faster than LUKS
23:43<birch>scientes, will it work on a software raid 5?
23:43<scientes>ecyptfs=awesomeness
23:43<scientes>yes
23:43<pparadis>that said, you need to consider encrypting swap as well, and an alternative is to take the spare storage you have and create an on the fly compressed tarball of your data on it, then do the standard reinstall with fs cypto from the start.
23:44<scientes>ecryptfs works with any POSIX filesystem
23:44<birch>permission to pm you?
23:44<scientes>sure, but you should talk here
23:45<pparadis>(i should also include /tmp in the list of things that need crypto either way)
23:46<pparadis>oh, and /var
23:46<pparadis>but anyhow, yeah, there are options.
23:46<scientes>meh, /var is only for techies
23:46<pparadis>of for people with data in mysql database ;)
23:46<pparadis>s/of for/or for/
23:46<scientes>oh yeah, and also kernel logs could leak stuff
23:47<pparadis>nod
23:47<scientes>audit log of specific devices

23:47<pparadis>i really prefer the approach of having everything possible encrypted from the get-go if i'm going to care about crypto on a system at all.
23:47<scientes>if you are paranoid then you can just use systemd and then have logs be stateless
23:48-!-maple [~maple@180.155.71.55] has quit []
23:48<pparadis>not saying i'd recommend ecryptfs or luks either way, but i would take the approach of "just encrypt it if you and you care at all"
23:49<scientes>except the ecryptfs of per-user on-demand is better in light of cold boot
23:49<scientes>if you log out your home gets locked down
23:49<pparadis>i will say i've found luks performance acceptable, but also it's worth considering *why* a person thinks he wants encrypted filesystems. if it's to protect against somebody walking up and taking the hard disk(s) (or VM disk images in some cases), great.
23:49<pparadis>if it's to try to protect against people compromising a system and gaining access to data, it doesn't make sense, because things will be mounted and available to such attackers on a running system.
23:50<scientes>i only think luks is acceptable if you have encryption acceleration
23:50<pparadis>also, in virtualized environments, it typically doesn't make sense either, because if you're concerned about people having root on the host and getting your stuff, there are other ways to go about it in most cases.
23:50<scientes>like a recent intel of amd chip has
23:50<pparadis>scientes: nod, agreed there, although i'd say for systems with low disk IO requirements it doesn't matter much.
23:51<scientes>or even something like a marvell arm chip

23:53<scientes>but only really for kernel mode
23:53<pparadis>birch: whichever way you decide to go with it, the first question really is "why do you want to encrypt your filesystems, i.e. what are you trying to protect against?" :)
23:53<scientes>cause little software supports AF_ALG (only in 2.6.38+ too)
23:53<pparadis>yeah, i haven't used anything to do with geode.
23:54<scientes>marvell is also only usable from kernel-mode

23:55<pparadis>that makes sense, as it would seem difficult to predict block size.
23:55<scientes>you don't have to predict
23:56<pparadis>ah, i see what you mean.
23:56<scientes>you just have to figure out how to pass it back to openssl unprocessed if its small
23:56<scientes>from a openssl cryupto module
23:56<pparadis>right, a simple determination of bounds and throw it where it needs to go.
23:56<pparadis>or seemingly so at least.
23:56<scientes>i could figure it out fine, i just have no idea how to get it to fall back
23:57<pparadis>the openssl code is somewhat legendary for being difficult to work with.

23:57<scientes>for all i know, there isn't even a way to do this
23:57<birch>i didn't encrypt from the get-go for a few reasons. it was my first software raid and i didn't know if it would hold and for how long, and i wasn't sure how it would perform with the encryption. i never expected to still be using the raid almost 2 years later and now it's almost at capacity and i just don't have the spare space for a back up.
23:58<pparadis>birch: what are you reasons for wishing to encrypt it?
