02:43<jm_>vga=0x305 for 1024x768

06:34<MichaelA__>and it's the same way for many kinds of applications--and adding a repo for each application makes package management kind of cumbersome and weird
06:34<pparadis>you're talking about an individual package. the distro as a whole focuses on stability first, and you have the aforementioned options for running newer versions of things.

06:42<pparadis>um, i think the guy who runs debianadmin.com got compromised --> http://www.debianadmin.com/how-to-install-google-chrome-in-debian.html
06:43<univac>Hi MichaelA_ :)
06:44<MichaelA__>I've installed Debian and I'm going to stick with it for at least a few days, but I'm just not impressed that no browser other than epiphany works so far, and font rendering is horrid (at least in my eyes), and there have been countless little hangups that are just silly
06:44<pparadis>and debianadmin.com is running on RHEL5 ...
06:44<MichaelA__>like the path thing with ruby gems :/
06:44<tumulte>Hi
06:45<pparadis>you can always reach out to developers and participate in the mailing lists to discuss things like this, and make suggestions for improvement.

06:46<tumulte>what would be the cleanest way to do so ?
06:46<tumulte>(installing the latest git jack)
06:46<MichaelA__>I suppose, but in the past when I've done anything like that I've been met with "It's a feature" and "you just don't understand how it works" excuses a lot

06:47<pparadis>MichaelA__: i can understand that. feedback is always welcomed, however. you may actually want to give wheezy a try as well, perhaps in a VM first.
06:48<pparadis>you might find it more to your liking, with the caveat that it is of course the testing version (although testing is frozen now), and will be the next stable release.
06:49<MichaelA__>if I end up scrapping this installation I'll definitely do that before I go back to arch or try something else
06:49<MichaelA__>I'd really like to give Debian a fair shake again, it's been a while

06:49<univac>I'm running Ubuntu at the moment
06:49<pparadis>it is important to realize that the first priority of debian's stable releases is avoiding anything resembling a moving target. it's important for people who base things on debian that demand high stability and predictable behavior. i think you might enjoy trying wheezy, though, just please do keep in mind that it is still a moving target until it goes stable :)

09:17<dpkg>A very common problem is that some people prefer to follow a step-by-step tutorial that shows them how to setup their system without reading the documentation or understanding what they are doing. 09:19<pparadis>mjt: there is a massive difference in well written tutorials and sloppy "here buddy run these commands and good luck" crap. tutorials are, in fact, extremely helpful when done right, and people have to start somewhere when they're learning about things. with things like virtualization, reading man pages for dozens of things doesn't cut it for common use cases and new users.

19:09<parag>can anyone tell me how to get a list of IRC channels ?
19:09<abrotman>parag: /list
19:10<abrotman>parag: but you probably want to give it something to search for
19:10<daemonkeeper>One does not want to do that.
19:10<abrotman>like /list *foo*
19:10<abrotman>dpkg: tell parag about irc primer
19:10<daemonkeeper>Most if not all clients have proper windows/special modes for channel listings which allow to sort and group as one likes.
19:11<daemonkeeper>That's a much better idea than typing /list.
19:11<parag>thnx ...
19:11<parag>but is there only one channel "#debian" running on this server ? i guess.
19:12<daemonkeeper>Sure. Channel names are unique within an IRC network.

22:41<nevyn>so yes the intel card will have accelerated gl that said
22:42<nevyn>intel cards have ok accelerated gl for simple things. (basic games and blah)
22:42<dfguk>is this video card better or worse than intel hd? http://www.thefitpc.com/products/intensepc-standard
22:42<dfguk>Intel® HM65 Express Chipset
22:43<dfguk>I would prefer a fanless pc if video card performance would not be much different
22:43<nevyn>intel HD is the next version of HM65
22:43<nevyn>if you care at all aobut video card performance for 3d intel is not the droid you're looking for
22:43<nevyn>like I love intel right and they're well supported
22:44<nevyn>and if you need basic 3d but mostly 2d stuff.. they're great
22:44<abrotman>the 3d is acceptable, not great
22:44<abrotman>you can play lots of 3d games
22:45<dfguk>I would need 3d effects in gnome for sure, on top of that, I'd like to watch 1080 movies. I do not play games, but I do need google earth
22:45<nevyn>either card would do that stuff fine
22:45<dfguk>am I demanding too much from intel
22:45<abrotman>no ..
22:45<abrotman>my card is two years old, and i can do that

23:10<coreyb>okay cool.
23:11<coreyb>hey sney any advice with trying to netinstall debian from an existing installation on a netbook.
23:12<coreyb>without any physical media (usb drive)

23:12<coreyb>is something like that even possible.
23:12<sney>!debootstrap
23:12<dpkg>debootstrap can create a basic Debian system from scratch, without apt/dpkg. Useful for installing in a <chroot>. It is key to installing Debian GNU/Linux from a Unix/Linux system, ask me about <install guide>. http://wiki.debian.org/Debootstrap http://www.debian-administration.org/article/Installing_new_Debian_systems_with_debootstrap
