02:51<ThePerfectEnemy>Hi all
02:52<ThePerfectEnemy>Anyone here with .deb package creation experience?
02:53<Nemoder_>!ask
02:53<dpkg>If you have a question, just ask! For example: "I have a problem with ___; I'm running Debian version ___. When I try to do ___ I get the following output ___. I expected it to do ___." Don't ask if you can ask, if anyone uses it, or pick one person to ask. We're all volunteers; make it easy for us to help you. If you don't get an answer try a few hours later or on debian-user@lists.debian.org. See <smart questions><errors>.
02:55<ThePerfectEnemy>Well, I'm trying to create some packages to manage server configuration
02:56-!-dmz [~dmz@64.203.213.206.dyn-cm-pool-59.pool.hargray.net] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
02:56<ThePerfectEnemy>Ideally I'd be able to run apt-get foo-env and replicate foo's environment on a new machine
02:57<ThePerfectEnemy>but there is some boostrapping involved because I need to add my own repo to sources.list (actually a new file in sources.list.d)
02:58<ThePerfectEnemy>so I have a bootstrap package which I can install via dpkg -i, and then i can install the core package via apt-get
02:58<ThePerfectEnemy>the problem is, after installing the bootstrap package, I still have to run apt-get update to pick up the changes

03:01-!-mauregato [~mauregato@90.163.65.156] has quit [Quit: leaving]
03:03<ThePerfectEnemy>if I put this in the postinst script, I get an error because I'm unable to get the lock /var/lib/dpkg/lock
03:03-!-noahfx [~noahfx@201.2.151.186.static.intelnet.net.gt] has quit [Quit: Lost terminal]
03:03<ThePerfectEnemy>presumably because i'm in the middle of a package installation already
03:04<ThePerfectEnemy>Is there a proper way for a package to modify sources.list? Or is there a reason why this is a bad idea to begin with?

11:11<Bireyn>odd
11:11<Bireyn>for me, the new gmail client won't load in iceweasel, but it will in firefox
11:11<Bireyn>calls it an "unsupported browser"
11:12<themill>That might be a recent change to gmail that affects iceweasel in squeeze; mozilla.debian.net has newer versions of iceweasel that would be fine
11:12<themill>(that's not an "iceweasel vs firefox" problem though, that's just version compatibility)

11:24<mekt>weasel: what is nostrip?
11:25<weasel>it's an option that some package builds accept to not strip out debug symbols after building
11:29<mekt>Presuming the symbols would be in a mirror type placement under /usr/lib/debug , there are none for this library.
11:30<themill>!nostrip
11:30<dpkg>When building packages, you should be able to use "DEB_BUILD_OPTIONS=nostrip dpkg-buildpackage" to leave debugging symbols in the binaries. Not all packages have a <debian/rules> that supports this option, but most will since <debhelper> supports this automatically; see <policy> §4.9.1 for details and consider filing a wishlist bug if the package doesn't do so and doesn't already create a -dbg package.

13:03<cygal>hello, since the support of my graphics card has been removed from fglrx (r600), I've decided to use radeon
13:03<cygal>I'm on a laptop, my card is "Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] nee ATI RV630 [Mobility Radeon HD 2600]"
13:03<cygal>everything works fine but the laptop makes a lot of noise, due to the fans
13:04<cygal>CPU is in powersave mode
13:04-!-bfly_ is now known as bfly
13:04-!-JuanLunaN [~jota@63.245.68.194] has quit [Quit: saliendo... :NothingTODOhere:]
13:05<cygal>the archlinux page on ATI recommands using "echo low > /sys/class/drm/card0/device/power_profile" to ask for better power management
13:05<cygal>but /sys/class/drm only contains "ttm" and "version"
13:05<cygal>any idea?
13:06<babilen>cygal: Did you install firmware-linux-nonfree? I am not particularly sure if you need that for power management, but I would at least make sure that you have it. Likewise for libgl1-mesa-dri (3d acceleration), but that is a seperate issue. Trying a newer Xorg and kernel version might also help and could provide the configuration option you are after. See "/msg dpkg bdo kernel" and "/msg dpkg bdo xorg"
13:07<cygal>I did install both indeed
13:07<cygal>and I forgot to mention that I run sid, and have done so for a few years now
13:07<cygal>will do the appropriate /msg, thanks

13:08<babilen>cygal: I am not entirely sure what provides the configuration option you mentioned and you might want to double-check in #radeon on irc.freenode.net -- All that being said: It is likely that it boils down to a newer kernel version which you can install from backports.

13:09<babilen>cygal: Did you install that from backports or are you using something different than Debian Squeeze (i.e. stable)
13:09<cygal>I'm using sid
13:10<cygal>don't worry too much for now, I'm going to try to understand what dpkg says to me
13:11<babilen>cygal: Alright -- You are welcome in #debian-next in that case (channel for testing/unstable) -- #radeon is most likely worth a try for this issue though and the factoids I mentioned earlier are geared towards users who track stable and not testing or unstable.
13:11<cygal>okay
13:11<cygal>sorry for the confusion, and thanks for the kind help!
13:12<babilen>cygal: I'll ping if I find more details, but I don't know this from the top of my head.
